Nikola Tesla, with Rudjer Boscovich's book "Theoria Philosophiae Naturalis", in front of the spiral coil of his high-voltage Tesla coil transformer at his East Houston St., New York, laboratory.

Tesla is typically shown standing confidently, either holding the book or with it placed on a nearby table, symbolizing the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical application. He is dressed formally, reflecting his professional demeanor and the serious nature of his work.

Ok, #fedibrain - How cool would it be to have a book by @pluralistic like Little Brother illustrated by @davidrevoy ?

If such a collaboration already exists, please point me to where I can buy it!

The Big Bang of Numbers

How to Build the Universe Using Only Math

An engaging and imaginative tour through the fundamental mathematical concepts—from arithmetic to infinity—that form the building blocks of our universe.

Our universe has multiple origin stories, from religious creation myths to the Big Bang of scientists. But if we leave those behind and start from nothing—no matter, no cosmos, not even empty space—could we create a universe using only math? Irreverent, richly illustrated, and boundlessly creative, The Big Bang of Numbers invites us to try.
In this new mathematical origin story, mathematician and novelist Manil Suri creates a natural progression of ideas needed to design our world, starting with numbers and continuing through geometry, algebra, and beyond. He reveals the secret lives of real and imaginary numbers, teaches them to play abstract games with real-world applications, discovers unexpected patterns that connect humble lifeforms to enormous galaxies, and explores...

A friendly reminder from someone who makes books;
If you read a book and liked it, please talk about it. It doesn't have to be a review, although those really do help.
Just, tell a friend. Post "this book was pretty rad!" somewhere.
If no one talks about a book, it basically doesn't exist for lots of people.
Thank you kindly!

Twice in the past three days, I stumbled on a piece of printed media younger than a decade old mentioning a URL to an online video game that doesn't exist anymore.

Once in a Spirit Animals book by Brandon Mull that my 9 year-old daughter picked at the book barn specifically for it. She was disappointed but read the book anyway. The link now redirects to the series presentation on the publisher website.

Second in LEGO instructions for a 2014 set, there's an full-page advertisement for the PC/Android/iOS game LEGO City My City doesn't exist anymore anywhere I looked.

The difference in longevity between the two mediums is striking.

Still salty that the cinematic adaptation of the book World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (2006) written by Max Brooks, which is a lovely collection of apocalyptic short stories, ended up being written as a white savior long story starring Brad Pitt. 😫

There's a social reading platform called @bookwyrm which is an alternative to Amazon's Goodreads. BookWyrm is part of the Fediverse, and BookWyrm accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc. You can find out more at:

So an author discovers someone is selling AI-generated books under her name on Amazon and then Amazon (initially) claims they can't remove them because she hasn't trademarked her name...

The books have been removed by now, but probably only because the author, Jane Friedman, went public.

The Sakya Monastery in tibet has a library comprising some 84,000 books. Most are Buddhist scriptures, but there are works of literature, history, philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, and art. They date back centuries.

In 2011 they began to digitize the library. All books are indexed and about 20% have been fully digitized.

Looking up at a very tall wall of books/scrolls inside of small boxes which are grouped inside of cubes. Everything is mostly brown with splashes of bright colors.

@onepict This was one of my favourite quotes from Snuff by Terry Pratchett:

"Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'."

Some people date the recent decline of England to 2016 but imo it began on 12 March 2015. I've been re-reading Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, and Night Watch, which all seem as relevant now as when written over 20 years ago. Here's Vimes thinking about processions staged by the powers that be.

"There was nothing like the massed ranks of wizardry walking sedately through the city in a spirit of civic amicability to subtly remind the more thoughtful kind of person that it hadn’t always been this way. Look at us, the wizards seemed to be saying. We used to rule this city. Look at our big staffs with the knobs on the end. Any one of these could do some very serious damage in the wrong hands so it’s a good thing, isn’t it, that they’re in the right hands at the moment? Isn’t it nice that we all get along so well?" - Jingo by Terry Pratchett, by jingo

Oh for fuck's sake. Instead of fixing its lax security that allows pirates to scour the site and steal ebooks, Amazon is automatically eliminating legit copies of author's books with zero warning for violating Kindle Unlimited's strict exclusivity rules when its bots find free pirated copies online. This is stunningly crass and obnoxious, even for Amazon.

We've been getting reports from bookstores that The Terraformers is sold out at the warehouses! First of all, thanks to everyone who snapped up this weird book! Second, if you are trying to buy it, there will be more copies coming soon! Currently you can still order signed copies from @foliosf in the US. And of course the audiobook and ebook are always there for you. ✨💕🦌#books #bookstodon

Born in 1852, Mary Titcomb had a strong desire for an education & career.

Mary became a librarian & making #books accessible to everyone was a priority. She came up with a children’s room & set up “book stations” in shops & post offices in town.

But Mary noticed people from rural areas weren’t visiting the #library. So, she secured funding to build & begin the nation’s first bookmobile. 📚
