here's the thing, yes, you're gonna miss out on a lot of cool games if you start boycotting AAA game studios for using AI and abusing their employees. but there are more amazing indies than you can play in a lifetime. and wouldn't it feel cooler to know your money is going to help a small team follow their passion?

#MiniReview #VideoGames I finished Oddmar (2020) on Apple Arcade on my commute and it was an instant throwback to the Rayman (1995-) series with a very pleasant platformer flow in a beautiful setting.

Small gripe: The controls on mobile are somewhat fickle, the difference between a swipe (jump) and a tap (attack) is not always clear, leading to unwanted inputs, but the game is forgiving enough that it never becomes a blocker.

Damn, going back to Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic (2024) after a long time off is rough, man. I don't remember how to do anything, and the map beginnings are especially demanding. I wanted to start a realistic game and I kept remembering everything that it entails. I started planning a gravel quarry and I just quit the game when I couldn't even plan a dirt road to come down from it. 😩

I just sat down to watch #TheInternational #Dota2 tournament’s final day. It’s happening in China so I’m in for a long night on the US East Coast. I can’t really follow the #Dota2 tag from my single-user instance so I’ll do my own live-microblogging thread.

I finally put down what I've really enjoyed about Star Trucker (2024), enjoy! #Review #VideoGames

#MiniReview #VideoGames Songs of Silence is a breath of fresh air in the saturated genre of 4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXtract, eXterminate) with a gorgeous art direction and an opinionated real-time battle mechanics. Except it's unclear what the outcome of most battles will be, especially at the start of a map, and the retreat action is on a cooldown at the start of skirmishes?

Die and retry can work in many games, but I'm not convinced it has a place in 4X games.

#AskFedi #AskFediverse I’m trying to find the name of a video game I played on PC before 2012 where you build a heaven/hell/purgatory city for dearly departed in isometric view, and guano (from birds of paradise?) was a game mechanics requiring maintenance or covered buildings would stop working.

None of my searches on Moby Games have yielded anything and I’m starting to believe I entirely made up this game in my mind.

#VideoGames #MiniReview UBOAT (2019) is the most approachable submarine combat simulator I've ever played. But did it have to be all about Nazi Germany?

Via @Volu , here are #My9Games . It’s a fun exercise in minimalism, and I’ve voluntarily picked the first game in the series they sparked, despite a longer playtime in some of the subsequent installments, because they started it all.

A 3x3 grid of video game cover art with, from left to right and top to bottom: Civilization (1991), Fallout (1997), Dota 2 (2013), Anno 1602 (1998), Need for Speed Underground (2003), Supreme Commander (2007), Theme Hospital (1997), Transport Tycoon Deluxe (1995), Grand Theft Auto (1997)

#MiniReview #VideoGames Backpack Hero (2023) is a fun concept of fighting from your inventory, but the anxiety-inducing balance of efficacy versus sacrificing inventory space for loot ended up wearing me out.

#MiniReview #VideoGames Love the reverse builder concept of Terra Nil (2023), it looks gorgeous, and yet… Why am I so nervous fucking things up every time I play it?

please help me report these abusive harassing Steam reviews (that ridicule my SA) made to my games. steam moderators cleared them as acceptable (so i can’t flag them) but i don’t think calling me a slur & bringing up my r*pist is an acceptable review.

i don’t mean to make this a bigger thing than it is but i’m tired of this… and how these being cleared signals that Valve might think this is ok. it’s not.

Looking for video game recommendation: I looked into X4 (2018) and I feel like it's just a bit too much for me in terms of gameplay depth. Plus I'm not thrilled about AI generated voice lines (a review describe them as "TikTok AI voice" which I know will irritate me). I still have a space sim itch to scratch, what would you recommend to someone who enjoyed Freelancer (2003) back in the day?

#MiniReview #VideoGames The description of Haven Park (2021) promises 2-4 hours of exploration in a peaceful open world and it delivered exactly that for me. Cute, engaging, silly, it's a perfect video game nugget.

#MiniReview #VideoGames Road Redemption (2017) is a direct throwback to Road Rash (1995) with some modernization: upgrades, skill tree, diverse race modes, but it still is very much an arcade game at heart, sometimes infuriatingly so.

#MiniReview #VideoGames I gave a fair shot to Pathfinder: Kingmaker (2018) even after realizing it was yet another D20 role-playing game system computer adaptation. While the game is very well produced, it trips the player at every possible turn to ruin the enjoyment.

For more details, I hijacked a thread from @silverwizard to describe the death by a thousand cuts I suffered at the hand of this game before eventually throwing in the towel 25 hours in: https://friendica.mrpetovan.com/display/735a2029-1869-360d-0219-323577690188

@silverwizard I’m playing yet another D&D-based Computer RPG, and I’m so tired of this game. It works around a table because the game isn’t the only thing you experience, but in a Single Player video game, it’s mega-cringe.

I finally sat down to write my thoughts about Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) and it was much better than I initially expected, a feelings probably shared by CD Projekt Red’s shareholders.

I started writing this in 2019 back when Anno 1800 was released, but it still holds now that Anno 117 has been released.

#MiniReview #Videogames Played 20 minutes of devilishly simple to handle but hard to master Costa Verde Transport Department (2023) before rage quitting, 10/10 would play another game by @Nikita Lisitsa

#MiniReview #VideoGames I got House Party (2017) in GOG's Freedom to Buy Games bundle, and it turns out it is for me Social Anxiety Simulator 2017, so I'll regretfully pass on it, although I'm not sure I'm missing on much.

#MiniReview #VideoGames The concept of Spinnortality (2019) is original: it's a megacorporation simulator in a cyberpunk universe. Unfortunately, it's a little too much on the nose, and you end up casually trampling ethics, democracy, etc.. in the service of your ultimate goal, make the members of your director's board immortal. While I do often enjoy playing the bad guy in video game, this felt too close to home to be comfortable.

Wowee, I finished watching the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime (2022) and the whole thing felt like a gut punch. Not as much because of the bombastic action, but because the intense tie-ins with the Cyberpunk: 2077 video game made it mostly at odds with my own play-through, which was focused on non-lethal and stealth.

Now I would really be interested in a campaign of Cyberpunk RED with level 0 runners fumbling through their first job. Although I know it's a lot of work so I won't expect anyone to do it for me.

Wow, I found an application where AI-generated illustrations and videos is really useful! Are you familiar with these mobile games ads that don’t look anything like the actual game? Now with AI these ads look even further from the actual games!

Isn’t it wonderful?

#MiniReview #VideoGames I'm still in one of my first Dustland Delivery (2024) playthroughs but so far the pre-made character I picked at the start of the game died and now his truck is being driven by a slave he freed, a female robot who's in love with the former slave, and a little girl he died to save from scientists hell-bent on sacrificing her to attempt curing the ongoing zombie infection.

10/10 would recommend.

Me in the 2000s: Give me a video game with morally ambiguous choice and hard trade-offs!
Me in 2025: If I can't save everybody I'm demanding a refund.

While looking at Doom Eternal (2020) lore on the Doom wiki, I found out about Mighty Doom (2023), a short-lived mobile game I would have had enjoyed playing. 😢

I didn't know I would feel like this for a mobile game but there's a first for everything, I guess.

#MiniReview #VideoGames Just got out of my The Operator (2024) playthrough, and whew! It is a game similar to Orwell (2016), you have to sift through documents provided in a virtual desktop interface in order to find the element that will make the story progress. However, in The Operator, everything is geared toward immersion, with a reactive soundtrack and some clever game mechanics that are used only once because more wouldn't make sense to the story. As a result, a playthrough can be completed in less than 4 hours with little replayability, but it will leave an impression.

#MiniReview #VideoGames I didn't pay attention to the developer's name, but I quickly realized that Mothergunship (2018) by Terrible Posture Games was just Tower of Guns (2014), but IN SPACE!

I say just, but nearly all aspects of the game have been improved, sadly this concept isn't for me.

#MiniReview #VideoGames i wish i was the kind of person who would enjoy Jalopy (2018) but it just doesn't click. Maybe it's the game pace that's too slow, or the driving physics that are atrocious for what seems to be an automotive simulation at first glance? Or either the scarcity of resources or being offered too many choices? I've tried twice now, and I keep giving up about 40 minutes into the game at the same spot, either bored or paralyzed by choices.

#MiniReview #VideoGames There's something I can't quite square with most of Kaseido Games' production, and City of Gangsters (2021) doesn't escape the same fate. As a turn-based crime syndicate simulation, it is simply boring after a few hours. From the game you're suggested to continue from the tutorial, there is never any risk involved in what is supposed to be a growing criminal enterprise. Police arrests are rare setbacks in this game where numbers simply keep growing up. Competition from other gangs is inexistent, and the turn-based aspect means that they could be wiped in a couple turns if the player chooses so. Expanding illegal booze production becomes a matter of time, which seems to stretch for longer as the game progresses, a common issue with turn-based games.

Not bad but, again with most of Kaseido Games' titles, not very good.

#MiniReview #VideoGames On paper, self-published Polymorph Games' Foundation (2019) should have hit all my buttons: a medieval economic simulation, a no grid system with no manual road placement and many economic factors streamlined. However, questionable gameplay decisions eventually made it a slog. I'm not a fan of sandboxes in general so I tried to finish the three "campaigns" as fast as I could to get it out of my system. However, it is setting the baseline for Manor Lords, a similar game I'm looking forward to!

#MiniReview #VideoGames Latest installment in the "Crew" series by Runner Duck started with Bomber Crew (2017), Badlands Crew (2025) enable players to design their own Mad Max; Fury Road-inspired War Rig and take it on expeditions to fight a slew of motorized enemies in a desolate post-apocalyptical landscape. Unfortunately, like its predecessors including Space Crew (2020), the novelty wears off quickly and the repetitive aspect of missions could tire many players out.

Thankfully, the modular design will eventually make your Battle Wagon into an unstoppable force with minimal overhead, something that the previous games never afforded by always providing more stations than crew members. 360 degrees turrets are too effective and will make the middle to late game a breeze tactics-wise.

I'm a big fan of Fury Road and this game delivers in spades in that regard, but I expect the overall slog feeling to repel people less enthusiastic about the George Miller aesthetics.

Playing #XCOM2, I am once again lamenting the absence of a real-time recap at the end of turn-by-turn tactical skirmishes showing how short the actual action was compared to how long it took to plot it. Similar to the Civilization game end recap showing the growing and shrinking of each civilization’s influence over the ages in a rapid fashion

#MiniReview #VideoGames Big fan of the XCOM series, I really wanted to like The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. A story, named characters, and a chance to visit XCOM facilities from the inside, all sounded great to me! Unfortunately, the combat gameplay didn't do it for me. Most of my character deaths were due to fumbling with the cover system, and the tactical slowdown to give orders to the two squad mates ended up being rarely effective while being detracting from the action.

#MiniReview #VideoGames I remember seeing promotion for Leisure Suit Larry games in the 1990s that intrigued teenage me. I had never seen before an association between video games and pseudoerotic content. I didn't act on this discovery though, in part because my parents were in control of my spendings at the time.

Fast-forward to Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded (2013), the second remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards (1987) that ended up in my game library through a cheap bundle, probably. And after a playthrough just short of 3 hours, I'm sad and relieved that I didn't miss much at the time. I'm not sure what audience these games are targeting, but it includes neither teenage me nor middle-aged me.

Between the crude sex-related humor, the constant schadenfreude towards the main character and the dubious 4th wall breaking of the narrator, I was both disappointed there wasn't more to it than that and glad that it was finally over so that I could chalk that one off my sizeable backlog.
