here's the thing, yes, you're gonna miss out on a lot of cool games if you start boycotting AAA game studios for using AI and abusing their employees. but there are more amazing indies than you can play in a lifetime. and wouldn't it feel cooler to know your money is going to help a small team follow their passion?

@rye serling I don't know the specifics, but from the hashtags, it sounds to me like it's just more of the same franchises. These have been around for long enough that you can still play hundreds of hours of the previous installments without having to touch the tainted ones.

Can you please engage with this grumpy old millenial in good faith... what cool AAA games?

Seriously. Do they exist? ... Taste is subjective, I'm not one to stonewall or communicate in bad faith on Mastodon...just... please try to tell me some that are actually cool enough to warrant trying.

@Jonatan Jansson Even if it is genuine, your question is impossible to answer because like you said, taste is subjective. I could list you a bunch of games that you may dismiss out of hand because of your own tastes I can't pretend to guess. You can like what you want, of course, but don't ask Internet strangers to make you like something you have already written off, it's unfair to us and would only lead to pointless antagonism.
@hypolite I tell you what. Tell me some games YOU enjoyed and maybe a little bit as to why. I acknowledge that everybody is different and I didn't write out of the desire to "shame anyone that does".. I'm not into purity spiraling. Just ephemerally tired of a lot of the tropes that are being lampooned in Video essays/Shorts like excessive handholding and budgeting for the wrong things like graphics ahead of gameplay etc.

@Jonatan Jansson @rye serling I guess the last AAA game I loved was Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) which I'm guessing you could enjoy as well given your stated preferences. I'm mostly playing indie games as well but I don't shy away from AAA titles because they're AAA titles.

Others AAA games I've enjoyed in no particular order:
- Fallout 4
- Horizon: Zero Dawn
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance
- Grand Theft Auto 5

Other AAA titles I heard of I may play at some point:
- Baldur's Gate 3
- Expedition 33

Other somewhat recent AAA titles I've heard of in good terms even if I'm not personally interested in playing them:
- Elden Ring
- Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei
- Nioh 1 and 2

@hypolite
Fallout 4 is my 4th most played game on steam! But it's kind of like with "AAA cinema", I walk out of it entertained but no impression is lasting and transformative. New Vegas is a top 15 title of all time for me by comparison. I own BG3 and intend on playing it.

Tsushima and Elden Ring might just be the ones I think would captivate me. I know I've been missing out with not having played prior titles too! Thank you for the list!

@hypolite oh and my partner, @dotmargui , has GTA 5 as one of her all time favorites. So I did buy it too.. I think it's the time investment that kept me away... Maybe if I get a hardcore mancold I'll give it the chance I know it deserves and lock in!

@Jonatan Jansson @Margarida Pedro @rye serling I personally preferred GTA 4 to GTA 5 because the multiple main characters put me off. However the heists in GTA 5 were extremely entertaining and I keep a fond memory of them.
@dotmargui @hypolite .. stupid me... I missed commenting on 2077 also. Yeah, I tried it veeery briefly when it was halfway through the immense QoL-improvement cycle. Being that I love the Fallout series and Cyberpunk as a genre immensely... I really should give it a fair shot. You're right.
@Jonatan Jansson @Margarida Pedro @rye serling I started playing Cyberpunk 2077 a few years after its initial release and I found a polished game with unexpected heart which I blogged about: https://blog.mrpetovan.com/review/video-game/cyberpunk-2077-a-masterpiece-of-humanity/
