#Merz will #Flüchtlinge an der #Grenze abweisen also praktisch Verhältnisse wie in #Ungarn 😱

Free lunches, brain breaks and happy teachers: why Estonia has the best schools in Europe

How did #Estonia, a small country that is relatively poor compared with most of the EU, become an educational powerhouse?

In the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) rankings, which measures 15-year-olds’ abilities in maths, reading and science, the top spots are held by a handful of Asian countries, but Estonia ranks next – the best in Europe.

Its teachers are highly educated, the focus is on social and personal skills as much as academic learning and the typical curriculum is packed with a wide range of subjects, from robotics to music and arts.

#Apple, #Google, and Meta are failing #DMA compliance, #EU suspects

Not even three weeks after the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) took effect, the #EuropeanCommission (EC) announced Monday that it is already probing three out of six gatekeepers—Apple, Google, and Meta—for suspected non-compliance.

We've fined Apple over €1.8 billion over abusive App Store rules for music streaming providers.

For a decade, Apple abused its dominant position by restricting developers from informing consumers about alternative, cheaper music services available outside of the Apple ecosystem.

This is illegal under #EU #antitrust rules.

If you are a citizen of any EU Member State, I implore you to consider signing the Tax-the-Rich citizens' initiative:
https://www.tax-the-rich.eu/

The idea is to tax the super rich and then use the money for climate transition. :blobcathappypaws:

This is an official EU citizens' initiative, meaning that if it reaches certain thresholds, it *will have to be* considered by the EU institutions. That's a really powerful tool, if actually used.

So we should use it. :blobcatcool:

Cathedral or Bazaar? We made our choice.

Over the last 15 years, we have supported the use of open technologies in public administration.

The Open Source Observatory has helped the European public sector leverage open technologies effectively and efficiently by providing various resources, including a knowledge centre to reveal the benefits and follow #EU open source software development.

Join us on 21 November to discuss #OpenSource policies, funding, and more → https://osorturns15.eu

🇪🇺 €61 billion.

This is the amount of value-added tax (VAT) revenues lost in the #EU in 2021 mainly to fraud, evasion, non-fraudulent bankruptcies, miscalculations and financial insolvencies.

Yet, it is an improvement from the €99 billion lost in 2020.

Lost VAT revenues can severely hamper governments' ability to finance essential public goods and services, including schools, hospitals, and transportation.

We will continue to sustain and amplify efforts towards reinforcing VAT compliance.

A graph representing the percentage of VAT revenue lost in 2021.

Values are:

Belgium €2 530 million | Bulgaria €347 million | Czechia €1 362 million | Denmark €1 780 million |Germany €7 460 million | Estonia €40 million | Ireland €1 116 million | Greece €3 231 million |Spain €662 million | France €9 552 million | Hungary €461 million | Italy €14 600 million |Cyprus €197 million | Latvia €225 million | Lithuania €795 million | Luxembourg €70 million | Hungary €709 million | Malta €345 million | The Netherlands €-146 million | Austria €883 million | Poland €1 694 million | Portugal €713 million | Romania €8 996 million | Slovenia €87 million | Slovakia €871 million | Finland €90 million | Sweden €1 935 million

‘The ‘non-profit start-up’ Thorn, founded by actor Ashton Kutcher, is a driving force behind the EU’s campaign to scan the net for child abuse material. Newly public documents and financial information obtained by Follow the Money reveal the blurred boundaries between Thorn’s do-good public face and the powerful business behind it.’

The EU has coordinated the medical evacuations of more than 2,300 Ukrainian patients to European hospitals since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Patients suffering from war injuries or serious medical conditions that cannot currently be treated inside Ukraine have been transferred to hospitals in 21 European countries, as part of a scheme launched in March 2022.

By the way, it’s possible that #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg’s fediverse play for Threads is related to sidestepping the anti-competitiveness/antitrust issues around the EU’s Digital Services Act.

“Hey, look, we’re not a monopoly. We’re not being anticompetitive… we’re federating using an open protocol. Here, let our friend Eugen, CEO of Mastodon, explain to you how it works in very dispassionate words…”

#eu #ec #fediverse #mastodon #antitrust #DigitalServicesAct #PR #usefulIdiots

Folks, the reason #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg hasn’t launched #Threads in the #EU isn’t because the EU is determined to protect your privacy, it’s because the EU is determined to protect The Single Market (peace be upon it) from anticompetitive behaviour. It’s because they’re using Instagram to launch Threads and sharing data between them (and not with EU startups that might want to use that data too). It’s #antitrust, not #privacy. It’s markets, not people.

So what is #Europe's plan to deter terrorist #Russia from committing the #terrorist act of blowing up the Zaporizhzhia #nuclear power plant in #Ukraine?

What's #NATO's plan to prevent this?

Or is it just the usual "expressing our concern, are monitoring the situation, and talking to our partners" bullsh** that #Putin couldn't care less about?

First the dam blown up.
No reaction. No consequence.

What next? What's the deterrent? Anyone?

#EU #PressFreedom #MediaLaw #Surveillance #Journalism #Spyware: "EU governments want to allow state surveillance of journalists and their interlocutors, including the use of spyware, if security authorities deem it necessary. This is according to documents from the ongoing EU negotiations on the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), seen by Investigate Europe, netzpolitik.org and Follow the Money.

The EU media law, proposed by the European Commission last September, intends to protect journalists and the media against political control by governments and owners. These are visibly endangering freedom of expression and media diversity in several EU countries, most notably in Poland and Hungary but also elsewhere, as experts like the authors of the annual Media Pluralism Monitor report at the European University Institute in Florence, have warned for years."
