Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #coast, #friends, #nature, and #reading. I also like photography, goof food & my family.

Tanith Lee wrote vastly, and won the British Fantasy Award, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Horror for her books.

This is the first book from Tanith Lee's TALES FROM THE FLAT EARTH series.

Read this instead of #neilgaiman 's THE SANDMAN. It's a 5 book series still being published post her death.

I learned today from another author that he took too many elements for THE SANDMAN from her without crediting her...and while she was struggling with the publishing culture of the 90s, he was building and never gave her credit. Let's give her, her flowers back.

Screenshot of Tanith Lee's book cover for Book 1 of her TALES OF THE FLAT EARTH series, highly recommended to read, and where too many of certain elements of Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN was "borrowed" without crediting Tanith Lee.

“More than 90% of the public library digital market is controlled by one private equity leveraged company that bypasses the library through their app, which makes digital readers think the rental app is their library. In the worst case scenario, this decision gives publishers carte blanche to continue to force libraries into unconscionable monopoly contracts and lock them into their closed surveillance apps.”

Can a person be considered "well-read" if all they read are audiobooks and podcasts?

Absorbed in a book. A drawing from 2020.

I originally started this drawing in order to draw something with socks and sandals in it. (Too long a story to explain in detail.)

In the end, the drawing kind of evolved into something where the socks with sandals are not the main focus. I usually do this, albeit not on purpose: I make a plan for a drawing and then diverge from it along the way.

A girl wearing a hoodie and a skirt, sitting on the ground reading a book. The pages that she is looking at seem to be about marbled cat. The text is actually from my thesis - not that it matters. Around her, there are some kind of crystallized shadows of Cotoneaster bushes.

@onepict This was one of my favourite quotes from Snuff by Terry Pratchett:

"Vimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'."

Some people date the recent decline of England to 2016 but imo it began on 12 March 2015. I've been re-reading Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, and Night Watch, which all seem as relevant now as when written over 20 years ago. Here's Vimes thinking about processions staged by the powers that be.

"There was nothing like the massed ranks of wizardry walking sedately through the city in a spirit of civic amicability to subtly remind the more thoughtful kind of person that it hadn’t always been this way. Look at us, the wizards seemed to be saying. We used to rule this city. Look at our big staffs with the knobs on the end. Any one of these could do some very serious damage in the wrong hands so it’s a good thing, isn’t it, that they’re in the right hands at the moment? Isn’t it nice that we all get along so well?" - Jingo by Terry Pratchett, by jingo

HarperCollins Union is on day 39 of their strike with no word from HarperCollins execs.

so this is just a reminder that a better entry pay in publishing makes working in publishing more accessible for people who come from systematically marginalized backgrounds. In turn that means we will also see more diverse books being acquired for us to read.

Higher pay is good for ALL OF US and HarperCollins execs have been unwilling to come to the bargaining table.

I'm just now understanding how Bookwyrm could fit into my fediverse, and it's a bit of a revelation. #reading #writing https://joinbookwyrm.com/

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”
