Ver. 05 | install and/or move friendica to ubuntu 22.04 LTS VPS server

New Windows fuckery: I've set up Windows Update to only get minor and security updates. Until recently it was fine. But now "Windows 11 version 24H2" is available and it really wants to be installed on my computer. Including adding an update icon in the taskbar with a notification badge which I can only "Hide for now". The icon is disabled in the regular settings, and it looks like my last resort is to fiddle with the Windows Registry. Again.

Fuck you Microsoft!

Can anyone help me how can I turn off the heating on my Windows 11 machine? Thanks.

The only other explanation I can think of is having a Bitcoin miner installed called System Idle Process.

I don't know when was the last time I heard the fan was stopped, not in the past few days. (Yes, I tried to turn it off and on again.)

A screenshot showing a Windows 11 machine with a Task Manager and Open Hardware Monitor open. There are a lot of task running but none consumes any significant CPU, the system is 98% idle. The CPU temperature however is around 95 °C (203 °F).

But don't worry, the company that is unable to correctly implement a toggle switch assures us that they definitely implemented this new immensely complex piece of technology nobody asked for directly in the operating system in a way that is secure and under no circumstances puts anyone in danger in ways security researchers said it will.

Recent #cybersecurity incident around #CrowdStrike and #Windows #Azure shows the problem around monocultures and control over its one technology.

It is important for Europe to evaluate own dependencies and support administrations, business and citizens alike to run secure IT. For this #softwarefreedom plays an important role.

To the #Windows and #macOS users of Mastodon who have tried #Linux and ended up still using Windows or macOS:

What is it about the Linux distro(s) you tried that made it/them unsuitable for your use? If some problem or set of problems was fully resolved, would it be enough for you to be able to comfortably use Linux?

The poll is just a list of possible things that could make Linux difficult or impossible to use for some, please feel free to comment with specifics.

As of today, you can access your encrypted #ProtonMail inbox and #ProtonCalendar on #Windows and #macOS without a browser or a third-party email app.

🐧 The #Linux app is also in the works.

Thanks to your initial feedback, these include improvements like:
🗓️ Easier access to Proton Calendar
⏩ Easy migration from #Gmail
🚨 Notification badges
🔠 Improved accessibility and font support

and more!

All paid Proton subscribers can try out the beta today https://proton.me/support/mail-desktop-app

There's a Proton Mail logo on the top of the image. Underneath is the following text:
"Now in beta for paid Proton Mail plans". The text is followed by the logos of Microsoft Windows and Apple.
The screenshot of the Proton Mail macOS app. The mouse cursor is hovering over the calendar icon, and the tooltip saying "Open Calendar" appears above it.

It's hard for me to emphasize just how much #Windows 11 is just a nasty lead paint coat over Windows 10. Still, I'll present you this nugget for your consideration: behind every round corner Windows 11 contextual menu, there's your good old square corner Windows 10 contextual menu with more options.

It isn't hidden, there's a contextual menu entry just to bring up the old menu! 🤯

#Microsoft is using #malware-like pop-ups in #Windows 11 to get people to ditch Google
https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/30/23851902/microsoft-bing-popups-windows-11-malware

Basically, it makes a distro like @kalilinux look innocent to the casual shouldersurfer, as it looks like a current version of #Windows or a more harmless #Linux distro like @ubuntu at first glance.

OFC @tails are aware of the issue and are calling out for some maintainer to reintroduce the feature...

@Genders: ♾️, 🟪⬛🟩; Soni L. It's basically the same as "If #Linux wants to take over the desktop, it'll have to become identical to #Windows, just free-of-charge and without malware. No more distros, one Linux for everyone, one desktop environment, one graphical toolkit, only one of each, whatever it is."

Linux never wanted to take over the desktop.

I've had to install #npm on #Windows to fix a security vulnerability in a #Javascript library we're using in #Friendica, I feel dirty now.

This is my second laptop with an SSD and a HDD, and I feel like I've done the space allocation wrong because I'm getting long loading time for video games. Here's what each drive currently holds:

  • SSD (128Go):
    • #Windows OS
    • Program Files (mostly utilities)
    • System "My Documents" folder
    • Hibernation file

  • HDD (1To):
    • Video Game libraries
    • My actual documents folders
    • Swap (pagefile.sys)

Is there something glaringly wrong I'm doing that I should change to squeeze the most performance out of this setup?

8 Reasons to Switch from #Windows to #Linux - Make Tech Easier

There's been an upsurge in the number of users switching from Windows to Linux. Here are the reasons to make that switch from Windows to Linux.

Installed #Linux Mint to see what it was all about. My impressions so far.

1st day: Wow! So many features built-in and they work out of the box! It is just like Windows!

2d day: Not everything works actually but it can be fixed intuitively...or not. Some things seem to be too hard to fix, it is better to get used to them. Just like in Windows.

3rd day: But I already have #Windows.

#LinuxMint

Lmao so #Windows Defender on my work laptop just warned me I had a trojan called "Peekeul.B."

Nothing I can find about it online except from #Microsoft itself: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-description?Name=Trojan:Win32/Peekeul.B&ThreatID=2147772321

Windows removed it automatically so I looked at the details of what exactly it removed.

Turns out the malware in question is Endpoint Analytics.

That's Microsoft's own software allowing employers to monitor employee computers: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/analytics/overview

And according to Microsoft's own antivirus, it's #malware.

"#Windows needs to connect to a few more #Microsoft services yaddi yadda..."

No it doesn't, fuck you.

Also fuck #Microsoft for hiding the middle finger in the #Windows emoji keyboard, I don't need your unwarranted prude filter. Same fucking deal than #Apple who both replaced the handgun emoji with a water pistol.

I apparently started a new Tech Tips category on my blog for this one I found on my own to force-close a crashed fullscreen program with an invasive still image. I hope it'll be useful for someone else.

On the day of the release of a critical #Windows 10 security patch.

My Windows: Your OS is up-to-date! ✅
Me: Are you sure?
My Windows: Let me check.
My Windows: ...
My Windows: Oh.

#Windows 10 has a feature called Fresh Start. From the Settings panel:
Start fresh with a clean and up-to-date installation of Windows. This will keep your personal files and some Windows settings, and remove some of your apps.

In some cases, this may improve your device's startup and shutdown experience, memory usage, Store apps performance, browsing experience and battery life.
I enjoy the #Microsoft engineer's resignation that they can't fix the inevitable bloat, but at least they can provide a one-button reinstall feature.
