"""

Day 2

Opt Green: Coordinating a Windows 10-to-Linux upcycling campaign across Free Software communities worldwide

Windows 10 security updates end on 14 October 2025, KDE's 29th birthday and also, ironically, International E-Waste Day [1] (you cannot make these things up!). Hundreds of millions of functioning devices [2] will become e-waste. This means manufacturing and transporting new ones, which is perhaps the biggest waste of all: hardware production alone can account for over 75% of a device's CO2 emissions over its lifespan.

"""

It's #BlueFriday and let's celebrate by doing something good for the planet. The most eco-friendly device is still the one you already own!

Install GNU/Linux and run new & old HW more efficiently and for longer, reducing the disproportionate #carbon footprint from device production.

Donate the savings to #KDE and #FOSS projects to show your love for all the amazing things we achieve when we work together:

"""
Set Free Your Old Hardware

Installing a Free & Open Source operating system takes just 3 steps and the time needed to enjoy a couple cups of tea.

    1. Download a FOSS Operating System: Download the FOSS operating system you want to install. For devices less than 10 years old, Fedora Linux with KDE spin is our recommendation.

    2. Flash Operating System to a USB Stick: With one of several easy-to-use tools, flash the operating system to a USB stick. This will overwrite all data on the USB stick, so make sure to back up the files you want to keep.

    3. Boot and Install on Computer: Boot your computer from USB – you will need to know the correct keyboard combination beforehand. Click "Install" and follow the instructions. Voila! You have set your computer free. Make sure you have backed up any data you want to keep first.
"""

We need to talk about Kdenlive video editor on Linux.

Kdenlive is open source software that runs on multiple platforms. Also, Kdenlive does NOT requires a additional graphics card, is not intense on system resources, supports multi-track video editing, supports advance features like audio and video plugin support, supports nested sequences, supports proxy editing, imports most file formats, and is easy to learn.

Thanks for the lovely evening yesterday at the KDE Plasma 6 release party. The cubes are back and wobbly windows. There was also a nice spontaneously "screensaver" 😋.

A laptop with KDE plasma 6 and the settings of the wobbly windows. Somehow the settings are all over the place like an artsy screensaver

It was also a nice opportunity to see the offline. Very cool place. Will probably go there again.

I had a nice evening yesterday at the offline at the KDE Plasma 6 release party. Guess the most important thing is, that the cube and wobbly windows are back 🥰

Not that I really used it in the past, but I remember having it active during some Linux presentations and it was always an eye-catcher to have to show off the capabilities of this other OS that is for free and runs on old hardware.

Thanks for the invitation @KDE Eco #FreeSorftware #FLOSS #KDE #KDEPlasma #berlin @offline

My work for #KDE in January (this year) is now up! 😶‍🌫️

It includes the pressure curve, pen tester and other stuff I've been teasing this month. Unfortunately a lot won't be unavailable until at least 6.1 (and whatever Gear's equivalent will be), but that's how it goes...

https://redstrate.com/blog/2024/01/my-work-in-kde-for-january-2024/

Screenshot of several windows open.

The first and topmost one is a tablet tester tool with a small drawing on it. The window behind it is KDE's drawing tablet settings with a new and cool-looking pen curve option. Finally, the bottom-most window is a slightly improved NeoChat search dialog with a better header.

Excited for #KDE Plasma 6.0 next month? If you're artist, you might be even more excited for 6.1 🖊

UI not final of course, but here's a sneak peek of what I've been working on in January! More details in my usual end of the month post.

(If you don't know what's changed, see the alt text 😉)

Screenshot of the KDE Plasma Tablet settings. It has the usual options such as target display and orientation. However there are three additional features: the tablet tester in the top right, the pen pressure graph and finally the pen calibration button.

Why on #discord, not on #Matrix, where there is already the #KDE, #Mozilla, and many others open-source communities?

Oof, I'm cutting it close this month 😔 My work in #KDE for July, including some #Akademy notes while I'm procrastinating writing a longer trip report.

The usual suspects of Tokodon, PlasmaTube and NeoChat with a special appearance of the new Gamepad KCM! 🎮

Switched to #KDE #Plasma from #Gnome a few days ago.

The experience is better so far.

🐧 I wrote a new blog entry listing all the changes I made to turn the Lenovo Yoga 370 into my mobile GNU/Linux digital painting device. It's long because it contains detailed instructions for beginners. I hope it is helpful.

Ps: not sponsored or an adv: the machine is from 2019.

The last #KDE For page, I worked on, just got released 😀 Check it out at https://kde.org/for/activists/

Two more pages are in the pipeline and should be released in the next two weeks.

I just started my train journey from Berlin to the #kde PIM sprint in Toulouse (South of France). I should arrive tomorrow morning with the night train from Paris to Toulouse. Wish my luck 🤞

Does it still count if it's the 1st? I compiled a list of most of the stuff I did for #KDE in January!

@eliasp@Krita Thanks for that Elias. I know @Krita well from my previous use of #KDE. It's a great example of professional #opensource software.

@davidrevoy is obviously a great talent because I couldn't produce anything like that!

:linux: My computer upgrade from GNU/Linux #Fedora 36 to the new #Fedora37 went smoothly! (#KDE spin) :blobcatheart: Even with more than 4800 packages installed. The full process was easy thanks to the detailed documentation on https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/dnf-system-upgrade/ 👍

I'll soon update my install guide for digital painters: https://www.davidrevoy.com/article913/fedora-36-kde-spin-for-a-digital-painting-workstation-reasons-and-post-install-guide but before that, I need to test it more than a month.

So far, really happy with the effortless upgrade process from one major release to another.

A screenshot of my main first monitor; a quadHD resolution of the KDE desktop environment running Fedora 37. A terminal (konsole) show info about my system with neofetch (mainly the name of the OS, and theme used, 32GB of Ram, a Ryzen 7 3700CPU and a Radeon RX 5500 graphic card). Also, more than 4800 packages, if it speaks about the number of upgrade I had to do. The screenshot also has a directory (Dolphin) open, with the episodes of Pepper&Carrot sorted correctly. In background, a speedpainting of Pepper&Carrot , enthusiast, on Krita, and with the number "37" in big.

dear Fediverse, I'm working on a presentation about art made with @Krita focussing on @davidrevoy , mostly #PepperAndCarrot

Any favorite FLOSS project related artwork to suggest?

I already have #KDE 25th anniv
