Me: Please don't use Chromium-based browsers, use Firefox instead. Google has way too much control over the web because of Chromium and they'll be sure to leverage that in order to benefit themselves.

Chromium: Hey all, we're getting rid of ad-blockers because it's cutting into our record-breaking revenue! I mean, uh, we're deprecating Manifest V2 for, uh, security. Yeah.

Me: See? Please use Firefox. :blobfoxmeltsob:

Mozilla: Hey friends, AI is really cool! *steps on rake* Hey friends, we're making an ads business! *steps on rake* Hey friends, we have a ToS with either the most nefarious or the most incompetent language ever! *steps on rake* Also AI is cool!!!

Me: ... :corgi_wtf1: I hate it here.

In case you're using Firefox on mobile - so myself and like four others - disabling Firefox' new Facebook data collection feature is quite a bit harder than on desktop, but it can be done:
  1. Go to chrome://geckoview/content/config.xhtml
  2. Use the search field to find the entry for aboutConfig and enable it
  3. Go to about:config
  4. Search for dom.private-attribution.submission.enabled and set it to false

Done. This only works on Android, because Firefox on iOS is just a Safari skin.

Photo of Mozilla Firefox plushie in a small white box with black background, arrow pointing at the plush with following text:

THIS CUTE SILLY LITTLE FIREFOX IS SHARING YOUR AD DATA WITH ADVERTISERS AND BASICALLY, YOU SHOULD DISABLE THAT

HOW? JUST OPEN PREFERENCES, SCROLL DOWN, AND UNCHECK WEBSITE ADVERTISING PREFERENCES.

OUTDATED⚠️
Mozilla bought the Android email app K-9 (which didn’t include any trackers) and integrated trackers as part of #Mozilla‘s rebranding under the #Thunderbird name.

They even made it opt-out instead of opt-in. Their defense for breaking the law: ”we wouldn’t have enough data if we obeyed the law.“

It doesn’t matter whether you ”anonymized“ the data or not: If you want to extract data from someone’s device to yours, you may do so only if they knowingly consented.
https://sigmoid.social/@davidculley/113428366130956936

The Thunderbird developers listened to their users and removed tracking entirely. Only the beta version of version 8 contained the telemetry. The final release no longer does, at least for now.

It's clear what #Mozilla leadership was actually paid for.

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring Mozilla Location Services which provided an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰

https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃

The mental gymnastics skills of folks attempting to justify Mozilla paying their CEO $7 million while asking for donations.

#mozilla

#Mozilla asks for donations to reach half of their CEO's yearly salary, while people are getting laid off. Seems to me that the solution is simple.

[edit] Okay, this has gotten a lot of buzz, and I'm happy people respectfully weighed in with arguments and counterarguments. I'm not giving up on #Mozilla and #FireFox, nor on other initiatives for a better web. I am, however, going to be muting this now.

The yearly salary of the Mozilla Foundation Chairwoman is twice that what they ask in yearly donations.

No one should 'win' #ActivityPub. The whole point of federation is to not have a winner, and to get away from this corporate mentality.

By doing so, we can all win, not just a few execs, companies, worldviews.

LibreWolf: Custom version of Firefox, focused on privacy, security & freedom
https://librewolf.net
Discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37431474

* HN discussion of some interest: back and forth ... mainly regarding forks and trust vs. companies (Mozilla; others) and trust ... [transparency ...]

LibreWolf: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreWolf
* free OS web browser; fork of Firefox w. emphasis on privacy & security

#WebBrowsers #OpenSource #Firefox #LibreWolf #privacy #surveillance #Linux #Mozilla

LibreWolf

Main Features

* No Telemetry. No experiments, adware, annoyances, or unnecessary distractions.

* Private Search. Privacy-conscious search providers: DuckDuckGo, Searx, Qwant and more.

*Content Blocker Included. uBlock Origin is already included for your convenience.

* Enhanced Privacy. Hardened to maximize privacy, without sacrificing usability.

* Fast Updates. LibreWolf is always built from the latest Firefox stable source, for up-to-date security and features along with stability.

* Open Source. Everyone can participate in the development of LibreWolf. Join us on GitLab, Codeberg and Matrix.

If you’re switching to #Firefox, remember Firefox is not private by default. Consider the #LibreWolf fork, which is. Otherwise, go into your settings and adjust its tracking features (like having #Google as the default search engine), turn off telemetry, “experiments”, etc.

(Also, if you all switch and Google goes bankrupt, #Mozilla will go bankrupt too because they exist thanks to half a billion dollars a year from Google. So remember Google must survive for Mozilla to survive.)

#chrome

Why on #discord, not on #Matrix, where there is already the #KDE, #Mozilla, and many others open-source communities?

Mozilla’s new Mozilla.Social Mastodon instance is an attempt to reinvent content moderation - The Verge https://www.theverge.com/23710406/mozilla-social-mastodon-fediverse-moderation

… Or, in what a previous head of public policy at Mozilla told me while we were chatting before our talks at a data protection conference:

“Aral, we’re just another Silicon Valley tech company, I don’t understand why you’re holding us to a such a higher standard.”

When I finally managed to pick my jaw off the floor the only retort I could manage was: “But that’s not what you tell people.”

#Mozilla is creating a fediverse instance. What is Mozilla?

• A “not-for-profit” that owns multiple for-profit businesses and pays its CEO $5.6M
• Gets ~83% of its revenue (~$500,000,000) every year from surveillance capitalist Google
• Makes a browser that protects your privacy (*some configuration required)
• Is now a VC…

This is the best we can expect from Silicon Valley/capitalism. Question is: can we do better than that?

#Mozilla just announced they are joining the #fediverse :fediverse:

"In early 2023, Mozilla will stand up and test a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social"

they will start with Mastodon, but are "looking forward to working on the challenges that crosscut the Fediverse"

Wow. So the concerns about the #root #CA trustcor were enough to get them removed from the root CA program in Mozilla (which means they'll probably be removed from Chrome/Edge/etc). Read more here: https://groups.google.com/a/mozilla.org/g/dev-security-policy/c/oxX69KFvsm4/m/yLohoVqtCgAJ

TL;DR: a good thing happened today, #Mozilla stood up for your rights and safety.

It is so amazing what #Mozilla has achieved:

Back in 2013 asm.js, which has now evolved into #WebAssembly #WASM - one of the most relevant technologies for computing in the future.

2015, what has started as a research project by Graydon Hoare, the #Rust programming language, which will define how we will develop software in the future.

I think people don't appreciate this enough.

#Innovation #Appreciation #ThankYouMozilla

The layoffs at #Mozilla will have many consequences. One that I expect to happen that hasn't been talked about a lot, is that with many high-profile #Rust developers going to other companies, adoption of the language in the industry will accelerate. I also expect some promising new projects will emerge once the dust has settled.
