German astronomer Maria Kirch died #OTD in 1720.
She was one of the first famous astronomers of her period due to her writing on the conjunction of the sun with Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter in 1709 and 1712 respectively. Kirch observed a comet in 1702, becoming the first woman to make such a discovery. However, the discovery was officially credited to her husband, reflecting the gender biases of the time.
Serbian inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist Nikola Tesla was born #OTD in 1856.

12 October 1892 | Edith Stein was born in Wrocław. She was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism, became a theologian & a Carmelite nun. She was murdered in Auschwitz in August of 1942.

Her work on galactic rotation curves became one of the main pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter, and she deserved a Nobel Prize for it.

Os Lusíadas (1572), Canto V
Luís Vaz de Camões died #OTD in 1580. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry & drama but is best remembered for his epic work Os Lusíadas. His collection of poetry The Parnasum of Luís de Camões was lost during his life.

Transferred to Fürstengrube sub-camp.
In 1945 he was on a death march, ending up on one of the ships in the Lubeck Bay that were mistakenly bombed by the British RAF on 3 May 1945. More than 7,000 prisoners were killed. Jakub survived.
After the war he emigrated to Australia.
Today he turns 98.
