Starlink increased its "standby" price from €5 to €10 a month. That is for half a MB connection, unlimited data. Basically for calls and emergency things. Since we decided to get Starlink for our motorhome 2 years ago, they almost doubled their prices for all of their subscriptions. They always do that. It is insane!

But Tio why do you even get a Starlink?!
Because living in a motorhome and traveling with it...there is no reliable wifi/mobile converge. Not to mention one across Europe. I hate Starlink and the Elon Skunk, and we already have the dish for which we paid €300...so idk what the options are.

We use Starlink for "emergency" purposes. I thought €5 a month is fine. But now double the price...and I BET they will make it €15 in the following months.

The price of gas has increased because of a war we have nothing to do with. Why not cut down the profits of the big oil companies instead of taxing the struggling people who need gas?

The price for our servers and backups increased like crazy because of these "AI centers" that eat up computer resources...

The price of food and goods has increased too...

Did salaries increase? I doubt.

Did the financial support for TROM increased? No.

Where is this going? Steadily downhill 😁

I am trying to live with as little money as possible, perhaps around €400 a month, all included (food, gas, internet, etc.), but it is getting very difficult.

Welcome to our Trade Based society where you have to trade in order to survive. You have no choice. And even when you trade there is NO guarantee you will survive.

The ONLY planet harboring life in the Universe. As far as we know. And this is how we are managing our stuff over here.

I should not mention that we throw away more than half of our edible food and that we have a lot more empty places than homeless people, and how a tiny minority own more than the rest of the humans?! I won't mention that.

The Internet is a shithole

What drained me of power over the past years is this constant fight of debullshitting the Internet experience for me and others.

You always have to use an AdBlocker, VPNs to circumvent all sort of censorship - and for that matter change the location often else you still get blocked; find proper news sources then find their RSS, add to an RSS reader, try to read locally if these websites allow you to....else go visit their bullshit websites.

Youtube is still by far the biggest, or the only in most cases, video platform. Now even with an adblocker the youtube experience sucks - they autoplay videos, insert shorts into your face, make you click things you don't want, and now insert AI generated video description for videos.. So you have to use an app for youtube that removes these piles of poop. But these apps are constantly blocked and won't work all of the time...

I don't even want to think about search which has become a pile of nonsense. Full of fake AI websites and now when pretty much all search engines introduced AI summaries...makes searching a painful experience.

Even Reddit, which can still feel like a "community" of people posting stuff from time to time, is a garbage. Full of fake posts and bots, and no way you can use RSS to follow subreddits. Login to see some content....endless scroll....all a bazaar.

I have to fight with "free" Wordpress plugins that insert ads into your dashboard, I have to block AI Summaries in searches, I have to keep Freetube up to date and often when videos do not work there, open in Youtube. I have to read my news in a semi-broken RSS reader since some cannot fetch all of the news, I have to install a custom OS on my phone then block ads there too, but now some banking apps do not work....a constant loop of poop, to protect yourself and your sanity, because everyone is there to fucking slice you open for a view, a click, a like...

Always always a fight against this destruction of the internet even tho all I fucking want is to read some reliable science news, watch some educational videos from time to time, and post some content or search for content. What the actual fuck....

I know why this is: TRADE. Same reason why the offline world is a shithole full of destruction, garbage, less nature, all about consuming and shops. This is what happens when humans have a primary goal of trading. Same online, these platforms are about trading, your attention, data, currency in return for a service. So it is a normal "enshitification" of the online too.

At least I have Friendica, Peertube, Nextcloud, Linux (TROMjaro) and the like, that allow me to still use the Internet in a sane way.

But man...such a shithole the Internet has become. I can't even imagine how "normal" people use it without adblockers, with relying on youtube, facebook, tiktok and such platforms....must be hell in the brain for these people.

I used to LOVE the Internet back in the days. It was like a park where you met interesting things and people. Now is like a metrostation full of ads and merchants, where everyone is in a rush to go somewhere else.

Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

• People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
• People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
• Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

If the "authorities" are worried that children watch too much porn and these kids then try to porn-themselves-out for pleasure, causing issues since they don't understand that most porn is fake, then for sure forcing people to verify their age when accessing some porn websites will make these kids think twice before accessing any of the millions of worldwide porn websites....

How about you make the life of kids, and people overall, more relaxing? How about you don't force the kids to go to school and parents to go to work, just to survive? Maybe if people were to be more "free" and have time to learn about the world, to have fun, to establish relationships and not worry about wtf they are going to eat tomorrow, maybe we will have saner individuals, ha?!

When the human being is busy 8 hours a day, or more, 5 days a week, or more, with mandatory tasks (school/job), in a society based on trade (consumption), then the easiest and most familiar way to get some "fun" are shallow, fast things. Fast food, fast fashion, fastly-made and dumbed-down media, fast sexual pleasure (watch some porn), and so forth. No time for anything meaningful.
