Bei GroKo wird es sicher nicht besser

Schon im letzten Jahr mussten wir feststellen: "Die Ampel habe ihre selbst gesteckten Ziele für digitale Souveränität und Open Source deutlich verfehlt. Stattdessen habe die Abhängigkeit von digitalen Monopolen massiv zugenommen." In der Koalitionsvereinbarung stand was ganz anderes.

Die Ampel-Regierung hatte entsprechend der Koalitionsvereinbarung ein „Zentrum für Digitale Souveränität“ ins Leben gerufen. Dieses sollte den Einsatz und die Weiterentwicklung von Open-Source-Lösungen vorantreiben - aber "außer Spesen nichts gewesen". Denn gerade der Bund behindert die Arbeit des Zentrums, statt diese zu fördern.

Das ZenDiS sollte im Jahr 2023 Bundesmittel in Höhe von 34 Millionen Euro erhalten, angekommen ist die Summe dort bis heute nicht. Ein bürokratischer Knackpunkt war z.B. die Mischverwaltung, eine Zusammenarbeit von Bund und Ländern bei ZenDiS. Diese verletze angeblich das föderale Prinzip. Dabei warten mehrere Bundesländer (z.B. Schleswig-Holstein, Berlin und Thüringen) seit Jahren auf die Möglichkeit ihrer Mitarbeit in dieser GmbH, um bereits fertige Open Source Lösungen in ihre Verwaltungen einzubringen. Auch aus der Schweiz und Tschechien liegt Interesse an der Arbeit von ZenDiS vor.

Und es hängt immer noch an der Unbeweglichkeit der Verwaltung. "Über 96% aller Bundesbehörden nutzen laut einer Studie die Bürosoftware von des Microsoft-Konzerns, darunter Outlook als E-Mail-Programm oder Teams für Videokonferenzen", schreibt Netzpolitik.org und weiter: "Für Lizenzen und Dienstleistungen des Tech-Giganten gab der Bund im Jahr 2024 insgesamt rund 205 Millionen Euro aus. Vor zehn Jahren beliefen sich die Kosten noch auf rund 44 Millionen Euro."

Damit ist in 3 Jahren Ampel das Gegenteil der Koalitionsvereinbarung geschehen und man kann sich vorstellen, was zu diesem Thema jetzt bei einer GroKo stehen wird. Weiter wird die Abhängigkeit von den großen US Tech-Konzernen gestärkt und viel schlimmer, die europäische Open Source Community wird weiter im Regen stehen gelassen.

G is for Goodbye Google

In my ethical living journey with Sam, the next step is to #degoogle.

I had already made - what I think is probably the most important - step by changing my search engine. For several months I have now been relying on #Ecosia (planting trees with each search!), occasionally supplemented by Kagi (free 100 search trial). Also using the Ecosia browser for work (Chrome compatible) and #Firefox for home/personal. So Google hasn't been able to compile data on me that way for awhile.

I've also signed up for #Filen data storage at an amazing lifetime rate - I hope they stick around. German company that runs on renewable energy. I also did a trial with #Sync (Canadian company) and would highly recommend them if syncing and sharing data is important to you.

I use the Maps app on my iphone rather than Google Maps for driving because I find it gives better instructions without changing routes on me. But for planning trips, I have to say I still use Google Maps. Open Street Map looks great but it doesn't seem to have the Giving Directions feature - am I wrong?

In my work I use Google Earth Engine - a platform for processing satellite data - can't degoogle that unless they quit providing the service and am forced to.

Trying to remember to go through #Invidious to view videos on YouTube.

Google Chat - Again my workplace is all Google and I have to use it. Otherwise, Zoom is a well known alternative. Sam's page also also brought my attention to #Jitsi, which looks very easy to use - you don't have to make an account or anything.

I looked into private email alternatives and found some great options, but I decided to continue to use my gmail as it would be too much hassle to change. However, I am going to access it through the #Thunderbird client on desktop instead of the gmail website. This has the advantage of my mail being backed up on my desktop instead of just in Google's cloud if I do decide to switch emails in the future.

So not completely degoogled but that's the amount that makes sense in my life for now. When retired I can degoogle more. LIke I said, I do think the Search and Browser are the most important and painlessly replaced. #Google Search definitely used to be the best but kind of sucks now with the bloat of sponsored results.

This is so confusing. There are many free things where you are not "the product". We make many, see https://www.tromsite.com and https://trom.tf.

I wish people would stop saying this about google and the like. There is a simple and to the point way of describing these "free" services. They are TRADE-BASED. You have to trade something to them, in order to use their services.

In the same way that when you go to a supermarket you have to trade your currency for what you grab from it, you have to trade your attention (ads) or data to Google when you go on their platform. Currency, attention, data.

We live in a TRADE-BASED society where pretty much everything is trade-based. Money is just a currency we invented, but trades go without currency as well.

We spent more than a decade trying to shed some light on this confusion.

Może teraz? Gigant rządzi i dzieli, kierując się jedynie maksymalizacją zysków, z ogromną szkodą wyrządzaną internetowi (np. SEOSpam).

Do you remember hearing the news of #Google trying to enable #telemetry by default in the #Go programming language? Apparently they've been doing the same with their #Flutter UI toolkit all this time 😐 Their docs also mention that "By downloading or using the Flutter SDK you agree to the Google Terms of Service." - linking to Google's general terms and service policy at https://policies.google.com/terms

This is a github issue requesting Flutter to make their #analytics opt-in for complying with EU/ECC laws (#GDPR). That issue was closed in 2021, now three years later and the telemetry is still there enabled by default. And even if you try to opt-out they'll still ping Google's servers to let them know you've opted out, as per their docs.

When Google tried to add telemetry to the Go language last year it made news and there was significant backlash from the community, enough for them to reverse course and make their telemetry opt-in rather than turning data collection on by default - https://www.theregister.com/2023/05/17/googles_go_data_collection/
Unfortunately the same didn't happen with Dart/Flutter so far, which means you're likely to face more data collection there by default.

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin #uBO will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 (#Mv3).

The new #Chrome manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only #Google authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube #AdBlockers .

#ManifestV3 is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to #Firefox (@mozilla) and/or #TorBrowser (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

#Google continues to push ahead with its ill-advised scheme to force passkeys on users who do not understand their risks, and will try push all users into this flawed system starting imminently.

In my discussions with Google on this matter (I have chatted multiple times with the Googler in charge of this), they have admitted that their implementation, by depending completely on device authentication security which for many users is extremely weak, will put many users at risk of their Google accounts being compromised. However, they feel that overall this will be an improvement for users who have strong authentication on their devices.

And as for ordinary people who already are left behind by Google when something goes wrong? They'll get the shaft again. Google has ALWAYS operated on this basis -- if you don't fit into their majority silos, they just don't care. Another way for Google users to get locked out of their accounts and lose all their data, with no useful help from Google.

With Google's deficient passkey system implementation -- they refuse to consider an additional authentication layer for protection -- anyone who has authenticated access to your device (that includes the creep that watched you access your phone in that bar before he stole it) will have full and unrestricted access to your Google passkeys and accounts on the same basis. And when you're locked out, don't complain to Google, because they'll just say that you're not the user that they're interested in -- if they respond to you at all, that is.
