"We want to bring organisations and content creators into the Fediverse, step by step."

Our Foundation co-founder has just published an interesting piece on how we're working to help organisations and content creators find their way to the Fediverse!

For more information on what we plan to do as a charity and how Patchwork, a new service we'll be launching soon, can help 👇

Threads is opening up for the fediverse, and @zuck is already in place. Welcome!

Although, so far it's only possible for Threads-accounts in USA, Canada or Japan: https://help.instagram.com/760878905943039

Meta's #Facebook, #Instagram, and #Threads are down due to outages. However, #Fediverse instances of #Hubzilla, #Friendica, #Mastodon, #Misskey (family), #Pleroma (family), #Pixelfed, are up and running, with everyone in the #ActivityPub network continuing with our digital lives. ^_^

I won't go into details because they aren't mine to share, but a fash publication dropped dox (real name, location, years of internet history) on an antifascist member of the #fediverse today, based in large part on their activity on @kolektiva dot social and elsewhere on #Mastodon.

Just a reminder that the enemy is aware that we are gathered here and is watching us, and as we head into these dangerous times it's important to remember that. Think twice before posting anything here you wouldn't want linked to you in a court of law, for example. #SocialMedia #fascism #antifa #SecurityCulture #feditips

"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."

What the hell?? This is so creepy.

An open web requires open protocols, so I'm okay with #Threads opting into the ActivityPub protocol, if it actually ever does. But it hasn't. Not yet. I'm also okay with certain servers being insular and excluding Threads. Kinda strange to do this before we know how Threads will approach the fediverse, but #socialmedia lives and breathes on this kind of thing. And the Fediverse is built to handle it too. @rwg

Almost everyone who says "Mastodon didn't work for me" on Bluesky seems to have posted only "me me me" stuff for months (if that) on Mastodon, followed about 10-20 people, never replied to anyone and then gave up because "nobody there, it didn't fly".

It seems there is a big misunderstanding how this free and healthy social media works. We are not here for the easy wins, likes, shares and dopamine spikes. We are here because we accept the fact we are not part of the commercial hype machine. We choose natural engagement over spoiling algorithms, we choose conversation and meaning in our social media. At least that is how I see it.

#Mastodon #Fediverse #SocialMedia

Constantly hearing ”got tired of Mastodon’s technicalities, Bluesky is simple and amazing”.

How we could design Mastodon to be more simple and have less technical-feel to it? UI is one thing, but that will not cut it all. I have probably said this before, but I am starting to believe no matter what we do we can’t ”win”. The narrative might need to change. 🤷‍♂️

#SocialMedia #Bluesky #Mastodon

I can't help wondering if a lot of these #twitter converts to #mastodon post everything that should be in a #thread as totally separate posts (making it super hard to understand) because they've been trained by mainstream #socialMedia to think that if you post a reply instead of a top-of-thread post, it'll be suppressed so no one sees it.

This is a spectacularly good analysis of why traffic referrals from social media have fallen off a cliff and what it means for publishers. This all comes out of what @pluralistic calls the enshittification of publishing, social media, and ads. People are tired of and overwhelmed by clickbait journalism. The answer, of course, is to provide actually good content, and present it well.

#content #journalism #media #SocialMedia

https://baekdal.com/strategy/the-future-trend-around-not-having-social-traffic-at-scale/84077F55DCCD4F3C875B8449020AD4F2BA4469560BCD0BE15EE758EC2010D078

As a media analyst, I share the frustration that many publishers have. As a niche publisher, I stopped using Facebook several years ago because that was when they stopped showing my followers my articles. And we see the same thing now on other channels, like Twitter.

But, at the same time, it's painfully clear that this fake social focus, where we are not actually being social and creating communities, but are instead optimizing for random people doing random crap, but having zero interest or connection, was never a good future for publishers to have.
And finally, we have the elephant in the room... which is advertising.

The way advertising works today, for publishers, is fundamentally hostile to our future business model. Obviously there are different types of advertising, but the main culprit here is third-party programmatic display advertising.

The problem with that model is that it's defined around scale and volume, and now that publishers are seeing a decline in that area, these third party ad networks are acting against our future strategies and revenue potentials.

For instance, right now we see a lot of economic uncertainty that has caused brands to not only demand better results for less money, but also made brands very reluctant in terms of ad spending.
What doesn't work is to produce even more crappy content. If Netflix did that, everyone would cancel their Netflix subscription. Instead, the winning strategy (which is not as easy as it sounds) is to produce really good content for bored people to watch.

It's the same for magazines or newspapers. You can't fix this by creating more crappy content because the 'source' of traffic is not realistic. For instance, I see many who are saying that they will just use AI to produce a ton of low-quality crappy articles to have something for their bored audiences to see, often via SEO. But, it's only going to be a matter of time before Google de-ranks that type of content because none of it is what people want when they are searching for something they need.

It is all in your head. Technically.

The background: someone on the Internet said we should all ditch our glasses and do yoga instead, much more natural.

I think this was the best response.

Don't Consider Elon Musk's Twitter Government ID or Biometric Requests Without Watching This!

#SocialMedia #Twitter #Musk: "Before Musk, the person setting the day’s news agenda on Twitter was Donald Trump. As it became clear during his first campaign that Trump mostly did not tell the truth, the press corps gradually brought more scrutiny to the candidate’s statements. In some cases, cable networks stopped carrying his public appearances live, since they could not be fact-checked effectively in real time.

Musk’s broken promises have yet to reach anything near the volume of lies that Trump told as president. But given his recent track record, it’s well past time for the press to grant him an equal measure of skepticism."

Heard on HN re: #Reddit

> We (the internet community) made such a terrible mistake with #SocialMedia. We formed connections and communities and friendships [but] those connections are only allowed to exist as long as they are part of a profitable system. How awful it is to reduce human connection to that. To think that I am only allowed to maintain certain social connections as long as they continue to produce monetary value for an intermediary. An awful, awful mistake.

The influencer industry is huge today, but how did it take over social media and the cultural sector?

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke to Emily Hund about the social and economic forces that created the industry and how it still depends on precarity all these years later. It’s a fascinating conversation that also considered where it goes next!

in the wake of the New Zealand mosque massacre, the tech industry & many digital rights organizations managed to suppress/defang the #ChristchurchCall to end radicalization on #socialmedia while pretending to support it.

Now, "almost exactly four years after one of the deadliest neo-Nazi attacks in the modern age occurred, content celebrating the heinous crime can still be easily found on #TikTok." among other places.

If #SocialMedia is commercial and centralized on a tracking platform, it is harmful in my eyes.
If SocialMedia is possible on the basis of a free #SocialNetworking like in #Fediverse with friendly users and constructive contributions, then it is valuable for my life.
Since SocialMedia is not equal to SocialMedia, I did not tick anything, but then posted my view here.

I’m a good friend except when it comes to keeping in touch with people I don’t see regularly. In that sense, #SocialMedia has been a godsend. I can keep up with what my friends share and possibly comment on or use it as a trigger to contact them directly. And my (over)sharing lets them do the same.

The degree to which #Web20 companies sought to colonize the #Web never seizes to amaze me.

A hashtag is the fundamental unit of Web Magic, once understood. Basically, name things using hyperlinks (ideally, #HTTP variety) and connectivity magic happens, at Web-scale.

The #Fediverse itself is the latest demonstration of said magic, courtesy of #ActivityStreams 😀

Social media 101:

If you want people to engage with your content, you need to also engage with theirs.

It’s simple.

Social media is building a community. I feel like streamer/influencer culture has warped ‘Community’ to mean something it doesn’t - it’s made it selfish.

Interact. Genuinely. With people. That’s it.
