I've asked for help with setting up a mastodon server before and gotten nothing.

New feature in Mastodon 4.2 that I am very happy about: non-dismissable and very red notices for server admins when there is a new security update available.

We also sent emails to admin. This is all done locally by your instance, it (anonymously) fetches the available updates from the central api.joinmastodon.org every 30 minutes.

I can only repeat: do not use STRATO servers. Just saw yourself the trouble and don't.

Their pricing might look good but you get absolute garbage for your money. Unpredictable performance, sometimes degradation to the point of being effectively offline, unannounced downtime and reboots, lying support staff and a lot of lost sleep.

because i see so many articles claiming that it’s impossible to run a social media service and not charge your users or bombard them with ads, but i see preciously few instance admins actually ask for help with costs other than hiding a donation link somewhere you can find it if you go looking. so what’s the truth?

If we ever aspire to become a serious alternative to corporate platforms we can't continue with this behavior. Let me explain.

Two days ago someone created a "The_Donald" community of a well-known #Lemmy instance. Immediately there were cries for defederation, blocking, and suspicion about the admin letting racists run rampant on his instance.

Ultimately when the admin logged in they removed that community. But before they even had time to realize what was happening they were already being accused of stuff and if any instance heeded the call to block, it would have caused damage to the users who would have their subscriptions / follows severed.

Some users who've just arrived from Reddit and bring a fresh perspective are already wary of the shit show this can become.

That instance resisted massive blocks because it was large enough. But what if it was smaller? >>

What | have learned, however, is that Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners. Meta positions itself as a β€œsavior’, because especially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything. In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding the moderation. Instances will have the option of allowing ads from Meta or not (with the benefit of additional compensation). Smaller instances will have the possibility to register for a federation with Meta in a second step, but there will be no financial compensation and Meta decides if they will grant access based on their reputation.
Regarding Meta, I'm in the industry for 25 years and have a few friends who worked at Meta from the early years until recently. One s stil there. Regarding UFol, | was part of the disussion at the time, we held a vote at Emacs.ch P R S But don' take this at face value, obvisouly these admins have to sign harsh NDAS. But it sounded very credible and | could not imagine it going any ther way. Examples of big instances (from Japan | believe?) show that the long-term burdens are simply unbearable and operators just wait for the right moment to e 1donot critizise Meta for their attempt to use the favor of the hour to their β€˜advantage. As a public corporation its theijob to make proft. As I said, its not them who will decide the fate of the Fediverse. β€˜Overworked/stressed out admins, high costs for infrastructure, ongoing disputes β€˜and moderation challenges are what threaten the Fediverse. in 48 hours the bsd.network instance will defederate from universeodon[.]com because they added full-text search on all posts that their instance saw. If there are other instances that have such things and we still federate with them, let us know and we'll drop them as well.

we have always enabled "do not index" with all posts from our instance, and their full-text search violates that.

Can we please stop throwing around the threat of defederation?

Defederation shouldn't happen unless an instance is a cesspool full of terrible behavior with an admin unwilling to deal with it.

Annoyances like spam can be dealt with by admins without scorching the Earth and going nuclear.

Lets not turn the #Fediverse, where instances are supposed to be part of a larger collection, into islands of instances that have cut themselves off from others because of annoyances.

A humble #fediblock / #mastoadmin request: if you’re going to block an instance that is being brigaded by pornbots and for no other reason, might I recommend using the β€œlimit” option rather than suspend? It’ll have a similar effect without breaking all the follower relationships between instances. Mastodon.social was getting hit over the weekend, .top is getting hit today. Who knows which instance will be in their sights tomorrow?

Docker is turning off the Mastodon foundation’s Docker Hub account unless they start paying, which they’re not willing to do.

If you’re running an instance with containers, they’ll now be available from ghcr.io/mastodon/mastodon.

Even when Twitter’s T&S infrastructure was at its most functional – which I’d say was 2021-mid 2022 – I sometimes saw appeals on content decisions, suspensions, etc. take 2-3 months unless I escalated to personal contacts at the company.

I keep seeing folks expect #moderation and community management decisions on volunteer-run fedi instances to happen in hours – not even days – and jumping to defederation when they don’t get immediate responses. It’s going to burn out so many admins, and makes me sad and worried about the sustainability and scalability of our communities.

I also want to state: this decision from the joinmastodon.org website makes ZERO instances show up when a user selects the β€˜LGBTQ+’ category. ZERO.

We all know these instances require manual sign-ups to prevent trolls and hate accounts from being created.

This decision is terrible.

- agree 100%. Losing ads and decentralizing control will revolutionize social media and how we connect. But, without ad revenue, admins need to count on end user support for this to scale appropriately. Good, resilient infrastructure can be expensive - and the major platforms of the world recoup that through clicks.

In short - enjoy the platform - but consider supporting the admins! The quickest way for this to go away is for servers to disappear!

I'll be honest here, as a humble instance admin receiving all kinds of DMs and emails...

The abuse, excessive reports... folks our instance grew from 60 users to 22000 in the span of two weeks. I didn't expect to suddenly commit 6-8 hours of my day to this. Knowing I have other commitments like a day job and other things.

I'm burning the candle on both ends here. Look at this toot timestamp. Please save space for some patience.

When Tumblr joins the fediverse by implementing ActivityPub, we should:
- Defederate Tumblr if they inject ads into the federation for our users, and
- Defederate Tumblr if they place federated posts (our posts) alongside ads.

No ads on fedi.

someone on here wants to change the capitalization of their handle

in the past i tried this via the ruby console, but it caused problems where the user in question couldn't be mentioned from other instances easily because it would correct itself to the wrong capitalization

i'm thinking of having the user delete their account, freeing up the handle in the database manually, and then having them recreate it

but i'm afraid of just breaking the account further

does anyone know what would happen
