For no apparent reason, I made this alternative #Mastodon logo. I think it was created out of my burning conviction that logos should all be visual puns, and the more puns the better.

So here it is, the head is a speech bubble AND the body is an "M". Puneriffic!

Please don't campaign for instance-blocking because a particular post appeared in your timeline. There are better and healthier ways to deal with objectionable posts : report the particular post and the account to the instance admin, block the user from your account. Instance-blocking without reasonable grounds (just because you can) harms the #fediverse.

I am a bit shaken by the aggressive nature of those who campaign for instance-blocking right now.

If 400,000,000 people join BigTech.social tomorrow, that’s not a win. That’s how you recreate Twitter.

So let’s focus on what matters. Sure it‘s great that the fediverse is becoming more popular but the character of that popularity matters. How it scales matters. Avoiding corporate capture matters.

I see so many critics of decentralized social networks, and the #fediverse in particular, because of distrust of individual instance administrators as curators of social history.

But as we've now seen quite dramatically, a person with a big enough wallet and vendetta can just as easily destroy social history backed by a giant corporation. I'd rather put more trust into decentralized instance admins, particularly smaller ones. #Mastodon

I’ve considered whether to put tracker code into links to sort this out (we haven’t).

Where I work, we use #Matomo so this is fairly benign, it isn’t cookie based and logs are removed etc. We do as much as we can to make it privacy friendly.

But that isn’t everyone.

Organisations will want to undeerstand their reach if they start using #fediverse platforms, and they will mostly use #GoogleAnalytics.

How should users and orgs approach this? Are there any good solutions?

Most of my projects never lived on #GitHub, the main reason for having an account there is contributions to projects that live there. Really looking forward to having @forgefed functionality available, the #Fediverse of source code. After being silent for some time, the initiative appears to show some activity recently.

Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently.

#Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it!

This will be a massive expansion, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners.

This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

The question is, what is the context? Ie, explaining to people on Twitter, I say "find me on #Mastodon". Yes I know they can follow me with #Friendica or #Pleroma but "find me on the #Fediverse" doesn't name a concrete thing and that's going to be confusing. If I'm on Pleroma or Friendica I will probably already understand I can interact with Mastodon.

That said, I do want to make sure people know the Fediverse is much more than Mastodon. The question is: when and how to introduce that?

Pretty sure there are some that's been active for 10+ years. Which ones?

Context: Friendica has been around long before Mastodon, long before ActivityPub, and was always amazing about implementing open protocols of other networks.

It's now part of fedi, but also fedi's very real connection to the days of yore, when OStatus was a thing and the Earth was young.
