I’m not entirely happy the most visible innovations in online technology in the past ten years have been entirely motivated by the ad industry (pivot to video, short form content) or selling artificially scarce digital goods (NFT, Metaverse).

On the bright side, the #Fediverse is a breath of fresh air with no obvious way of exploiting it for profit. It’ll come, of course, but it wasn’t the original motivation for its creation and it’s already something.

@Hypolite Petovan neither crypto wasn't originally intended for scams, pyramid schemes and "investments". Yet here we are...
@Cătălin Petrescu I'm on the fence about cryptocurrency. Most notably, the anonymity of Satoshi Nakamoto that still hasn't been uncovered sheds doubt about the original intentions. The fact that these intentions have only (and can only) materialized on the fringe of this technology makes me think the intentions were likely to be more closely aligned with what cryptocurrency became better known for.
@Hank G ☑️ I don't have a good enough grasp on general finance to believe there can be micropayments without involving banks or an equally centralized institution.
