We created the account at Mastodon only a week ago and this community here grown to over 32,000.

Thank you for welcoming us here, thank you for all boosts, comments, advice, support and your engagement.

We are still learning and try to find our specific language on this platform. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Remember with us and amplify our voice.

If your instance is blocking an instance with folks you'd like to still read, you can add any Mastodon account to your feed reader (I like NetNewsWire myself) by using the following formula:

Most of my projects never lived on #GitHub, the main reason for having an account there is contributions to projects that live there. Really looking forward to having @forgefed functionality available, the #Fediverse of source code. After being silent for some time, the initiative appears to show some activity recently.

Big rumblings in the expansion of the #Fediverse have been happening recently.

#Tumblr has already promised to implement #ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon uses), which will mean you can follow Tumblr accounts from here and vice versa. And today we a learning that #Flickr is also considering it!

This will be a massive expansion, which obviously carries some uncertainties, but I, for one, welcome our new federation partners.

This is the way the internet is supposed to work.

The question is, what is the context? Ie, explaining to people on Twitter, I say "find me on #Mastodon". Yes I know they can follow me with #Friendica or #Pleroma but "find me on the #Fediverse" doesn't name a concrete thing and that's going to be confusing. If I'm on Pleroma or Friendica I will probably already understand I can interact with Mastodon.

That said, I do want to make sure people know the Fediverse is much more than Mastodon. The question is: when and how to introduce that?

I agree in principle but it's kind of inevitable (for now) since it's easily the most recognizable app in the #fediverse

I'm also SUPER excited for the #fediverse and the freeing of folks from walled gardens. So keep preaching please! :-D\o/

Hey #Fediverse, what are the *longest continuously running* #Friendica instances out there?

Pretty sure there are some that's been active for 10+ years. Which ones?

Context: Friendica has been around long before Mastodon, long before ActivityPub, and was always amazing about implementing open protocols of other networks.

It's now part of fedi, but also fedi's very real connection to the days of yore, when OStatus was a thing and the Earth was young.

What if the universe is set up just like the Fediverse, but we don’t know about the existence of any other life because our Earth instance was preemptively blocked for hateful conduct.

Content warning: Masto Algorithm Discourse

This is why I have mixed feelings about #Mastodon going mainstream, data scrapers are a much bigger threat for us now. Just because I decided to make a post public doesn't mean it can be scraped, archived, and stored in an entirely separate database. This is a form of #SurveillanceCapitalism and us #Fediverse folks hate it with a passion.

Content warning: Brands Town, Phase II

My guess is Trump coming back to the birdsite is going to lead to a third wave of new users on here. Pray for the hosts/admins. More importantly, give them money. They work for you. Elon's bosses are the advertisers and the governments that regulate/subsidize his other businesses. #fediverse

You came to the #fediverse to escape #Musk.

I came to become the Musk of my own instance.

We are not the same.

Over the summer I was really ramping up my Friendica contributions so wrote some quick guides on how to set it up for serving or developing. Then other projects looked like it'd be a while before I'd get back to it so I crushed all my VMs. Now I'm contributing again so have my handy blog posts to help me bootstrap again. This is *exactly* why I put this stuff on my blog in the first place. Helps others and even makes it easier to help my future self. #blogging #friendica #friendicadev #fediverse #documentation https://nequalsonelifestyle.com/2022/07/30/creating-friendica-server-ubuntu/

Considering the recent events regarding short-message systems usage and change of patterns we have reduced the server capacity of a well-known bird shaped service and have reassigned the servers to #fediverse!

Deprecated Facebook Connector(s)

@Friendica Support
Hello again!
I just had the great or dump idea (could not test it out yet) to reactivate my Facebook account to advertise the #fediverse, and especially #Friendica . I drew my motivation from the text
With Friendica, you can also fully interact with anyone on Twitter, post on Facebook and receive any content on Tumblr, Wordpress or RSS. Friendica allows you to integrate most things on the web via a range of addons such as ITTT, Buffer; you will be able to easily control your own data as you decide.
https://github.com/friendica/friendica/blob/develop/README.md

But then I read:
Facebook Connector, Facebook Post Connector and Facebook Sync plugins are deprecated. As of the moment you cannot bridge from or to Facebook with Friendica.
https://github.com/friendica/friendica/wiki/How-to:-Friendica%E2%80%99s-Facebook-connector

How about updating the README.md regarding the state-of-the-art in 2022?

BTW: I will nevertheless try to motivate the local Facebook crowd to have a try with #Friedica , evnen though I loved the idea to post there directly from the #fediverse .

Cheers

Has anyone written about #Mastodon access in countries which sometimes block access to social media (e.g. Egypt, Russia, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, etc)?

It seems to me there's power in the distributed network - making it all but impossible for a government to IP block the entire #Fediverse.

That's an enormous advantage.

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

(Please boost for reach)

  • Age 25 or less (7%, 2035 votes)
  • Ages 26 - 40 (33%, 8981 votes)
  • Ages 41 - 60 (48%, 13024 votes)
  • Age 60+ (10%, 2710 votes)
26750 voters. Poll end: 2 years ago

@alfred Wie immer im #Fediverse gilt: alles in Ruhe. Ich erforsche auch erst einiges. Außerdem lerne ich dazu, wie man überhaupt selbst administriert 😊 Bin schon auf die 2022.12 Version gespannt.

Content warning: GDPR and Mastodon

!Friendica Support Weird as it is, now with Mastodon 4 supporting things such as editing posts and subscribing to tags, the corresponding features find their way into Mastodon client apps (most prominently #fedilab which in 3.7.0 supports at least hashtag subscriptions) too. Are there any plans to make #Friendica Mastodon API client implementation aware of / able to work with that...? Worth writing issues for that right now?
(Talking open standards and #fediverse and all, it really would be great to see a platform-independent portable client API here too; at the moment it seems whenever #Mastodon releases new features and the clients follow up, it causes confusion or "breakages" elsewhere...)

Oh boy. The guy who founded #Fedified is speculating about a 2-tiered #Fediverse, and thinks growth will go to the version that enables "capitalist pursuits".

Is he right? Is this the Fediverse we're doomed to have?

Or can we build a better future?
@laprice @danhon I *generally* agree with this approach, but I can't emphasize this enough— it's very likely that we'll end up with a 2-tiered fediverse. The money and growth will go to the version that adopts community norms & frameworks that enable capitalist pursuits— reputation management and brand integrity are cornerstones.

This will happen regardless of what you, I, or anybody else wants. It's how the world works— a painful lesson I learned while advocating for COVID safety measures.

With all the new people, it's time to say hello and mention how #Owncast is looking for people to contribute to the project!

It's an exciting time as some really cool work is going on, and the project is growing along with the rest of the #Fediverse.

If you find this free and open #livestream project interesting and want to be involved, there's never been a better time.

Say hello and find out what part you can play in a project that people think is pretty cool.

A lot of people are moving to @Mastodon, but I also get a lot of misconceptions and questions about how it works, and about this cool giant social network that is the #Fediverse, including @pixelfed or @peertube. So, to answer all these questions, and myabe introduce you to some other parts of the Fediverse, I think it's time for a quickstart guide!

I keep seeing lots of long-time #fediverse users saying 'don't favourite posts it does nothing' but actually when you favourite my posts it makes me smile and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I want to add an application into the #ActivityPub (mostly for fun).

Is there any kind of local toolchain which allow to test the proper implementation so that over #Fediverse systems can understand it properly?

Boost would be great, thanks :rubberduck:

Please don't use #Fedified! 🙏

This is what it says about itself:

"(Fedified) is *the* way to make sure that you're following the account managed by the same person you used to follow on Twitter."

It wants to be a central authority. This is dangerous, and opposite to what the #Fediverse stands for.

People become dependent on a central authority, then it gets bought out by billionaires.

You can already verify your account on here without using any centralised lists:

👑 🔇 Cool. Realized you can download the so-called #fedified CSV list and import the file to your #Mastodon #mute list so you don't have to see all the clout chasers coming here thinking that their following count should give them some kind of special privileges in the #Fediverse.

:boost_requested: Boost for public service? 💜

@alex
First of all, thanks for creating this fantastic app to traverse the #fediverse! Love it!
Need to know how to customise it. Is there an easy to follow guide?

Understanding a little bit more about the #fediverse through data. Here is a plot of all #fediverse instances at instances.social as a function of their number of users and toots (statuses) and if they are open for new accounts. In general, instances are small in the number of users (median = 28). Interestingly, there are a lot of small, very active, and closed servers in the #fediverse. Also, some of the biggest servers are Japanese communities.
This chart shows the relationship between the number of users and the number of toots (statuses) for all the instances in the fediverse. Each point corresponds to one instance, where the horizontal coordinate is the number of users and the vertical coordinate is the number of toots. Points are colored in orange if the instance is open for new registrations or blue if they are closed. The plot shows a large dependence between number of toots and number of users. We also see some interesting facts: there is a lot of blue points in the left top part, which correspond to small, very active and close for registration instances. On the top right we see the instances which are biggest in the number of users and toots. In that part of the plot three instances are annotated: "mastodon.social" (open), "mastdn.jp" (open) and "pawoo.net" (closed).

you're being unreasonable. #Elon popularised the #fediverse more than anyone ever in the history of mankind! 😁

I thought it was important I share this picture of a #squirrel with a #donut in its mouth to the entire #Fediverse because when I posted it to #Twitter, it got one like. And I know #Mastodon will not allow such injustice.
A grey squirrel stands on top of a bush, arms at its side, and a chocolate-glazed donut in its mouth. The donut has a clear human bite mark facing the camera as if it was tasted, then discarded.
