Mastinator is a service that allows a person to anonymously follow people on the fediverse. No big deal you think? Your public posts are probably already anonymously viewable from your public profile anyways and all it is doing is aggregating public info? That is what its creator claims---it is just a convenience service!
Well no, it is mode concerning than that. It does this aggregation by following any account a mastinator user types into its service then replicating *all* your non-DM posts into a sort of "proxy inbox" in the mastinator.com domain that is completely out of your control and viewable by everyone!
In other words, if you are followed by mastinator.com it effectively turns your follower-only posts into public posts and lets people you have blocked keep following you by following the mastinator replica of your posts!
Innocent intentions or not this violates user consent.
A site called Mastinator (https://mastinator.com) has started aggregating and republishing toots without permission. It creates accounts with your handle and follows you to get your toots (e.g., @aral@mastinator.com, which, just to make clear, is not me).
Someone has apparently written open-source software to circumvent fediblocks by "woke" instance admins (I kid you not -- they're unironically using that term).
The only domain we currently know of providing this service is activitypub-proxy.cf, but I'd expect more to pop up.
We may need a tool to periodically scan federated domains for heavy subdomain usage that could be this software in use.
Anyway, thought everyone should know.

It is with a heavy heart that I, too, recommend to preventively block the QOTO instance. I've had a rather unpleasant chat with the administrator this morning about why they are on so many block lists already, and let's say he didn't honor the very motto of the server he's running, Question Others to Teach Ourselves.
It is a classic case of well-meaning person getting defensive when criticized. By refusing to block nasty remote instances, he opened himself to very sketchy associations, even if involuntarily. But not acknowledging the problem once informed about it is where the buck stops for me.

Seeing some posts talking about fediblocking turning Mastodon into a "filter bubble." No. We absolutely do not need abusive or fascist views to have a high level of intellectual diversity. Full stop. I see some complete nonsense under the #fediblock hashtag for example. Someone using the dictionary definition of a common word; an instance stating that they are pro privacy and free speech (but do forbid harassment). Things that merely trip up some overeager zealot's taste buds really.
Be very careful with using someone else's block list instead of creating your own!
