Research question for those of you who came to the #fediverse after mostly using mainstream #socialMedia like #youtube #instagram #facebook #tiktok #Twitter etc--
what was the final straw that finally got you to make an account here?
Did it take you a while to figure out how the fediverse works, or did you take to it right away?
Do you still use mainstream social media? How often do you post there vs here?
And finally, what is your level of tech expertise? Were/are you already a tech expert (programmer, web developer, "protocol user," whatever you want to call it)?
We have updated our Peertube to version 7! Lots of cool stuff - read more here.
But the most important for us is the visual aspect. Now we are using the main and default and much improved Peertube themes (Dark/Light) with very very minimal changes (maybe 5 lines of CSS).
No more broken UI, no more being unable to have a proper dark theme, no headaches with every Peertube updated. They have made an awesome theme and we will go with that.
We need to promote this platform more often and I ask people to try and be a bit more brave ;) and prioritize Peertube. Post there like we do. Sure you may get less views, but you are growing a trade-free (saner) platform, and thus saner minds that do not have to be exposed to the tsunami of ads that Youtube infects every viewer with.

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere wurden als ich zu Friendica kam Youtube Videos inline, sprich im Beitragstext eingebettet dargestellt. Doch das scheint schon eine Weile vorbei zu sein, oder ich habe was falsch eingestellt. Bei mir sieht das z. B. so aus:
Ist das so gewollt? Ich finde es auf jeden Fall weder schön noch komfortabel zu nutzen.

You make a video about cleaning up the waste, and that's something important and is done by good people, but then you post on Youtube and they show you first an ad about fast fashion.
Tell me this is not the most ironic thing. Same as selling hard-copy books about deforestation on Amazon.
And this is not to blame anyone, but please if you have other options use those too, like Peertube or making your books digital.

Let's be reasonable people and at least try. Youtube is an ad-company and if we want to cut down from this insane consumerism we should try to avoid Youtube or at least use adblockers.
I don't like how many podcast are doing video. Not just because I like listening more than watching (unless video actually adds something concrete). The real problem isn't the video part. It is the #YouTube (and to a lesser extent #Spotify) part.
I don't like podcasts becoming dependent on these corporations. They might experience a level of success in the short term but I think many of them will find out how precarious it is to rely on being featured prominently by those platforms instead of having real subscribers.
Advice for podcasters pivoting to video:
Remember that your podcast feed is still important. Use it. Add a link to the video for each episode, then encourage viewers to use the feed to keep up to date on your videos.
It's been interesting reading this #reddit thread. People are understandably upset about the prospect of #youtube showing ads during the pause screen. Lots of people threatening to leave YouTube, but at the end of the day, most won't.
There are alternatives. I've been running #tilvids for over 4 years now. We have great content creators like @thelinuxEXP sharing content. All people have to do is actually start voting with their eyeballs...

For the past few days we managed to trigger the auto-transcription for thousands of our peertube videos https://videos.trom.tf - All of our TROMcasts, our TROM documentary snippets, all of our videos indeed and all of the VideoNeat trailers now have an English caption. While it is not perfect, it is impressively accurate considering that it is automated. @PeerTube is a real alternative to Youtube, in all regards.
Every new video that is going to be uploaded to our Peertube will have a caption from now on.

Heads-up for the #PeerTube community, it appears Google has been blocking many tools/IP ranges that try to synchronize with YouTube. At least for the creators on #tilvids this is a massive challenge, because they can no longer sync THEIR content on multiple platforms, requiring them to manually upload to both TILvids AND #youtube We appreciate our creators going the extra mile, and please remember this is why it's so important to support alternative platforms.

Youtube is doing its best and most aggressive lately to protect their ad platform. Third party services that allow you to watch youtube videos without ads or being tracked are suffering. Invidious, Newpipe, Freetube and the like.
Now Peertube is being affected and users cannot synchronize their youtube account with their peertube one. Basically a peertube instance has an IP, and google sees that this IP is trying to grab videos from their ad platform. So they blacklist the IP. Unfortunately we can't do much.
Nothing will change until we are brave enough to move to peertube entirely or similar platforms.
Therefore our https://videos.trom.tf/ is currently unable to import videos from youtube. And we may not be able to fix this.
We now have 6 servers dedicated to transcoding/transcribing our Peertube videos https://videos.trom.tf - thanks to @Alexio who is providing 4 of them! Peertube is now a complete replacement for Youtube and I will make sure to push it a lot more in terms of use and promotion! We need to get people to use it, else without content, it won't go anywhere....

People can be as upset about this as they want, but so long as they continue to watch #YouTube they continue tacitly supporting their user-hostile actions. If you really want to make a difference, stop watching, and tell content creators why. When you can convince them to move to platforms that don't shove ads down your throat every 3 minutes, THAT is when you'll see #Google change their tune.

Ich habe das Problem das eingebettete Youtube Videos immer noch gut 30 Sekunden abbrechen. Das ist schon eine Weile so. @Matthias ✔ testet hier auf dem Server zudem eine Erweiterung die es erlaubt Youbube Videos über Invidious einzubinden. Und auch hier habe ich den Effekt das das Video nach gut 30 Sekunden abbricht und wieder zum Anfang springt.
Hat einer von Euch eine Idee wo das Problem liegen könnte? Ob ich es selbst beheben kann oder ob der Betreiber des Servers oder gar die Entwickler ran müssen?

Today I filed a formal complaint against #YouTube with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner for their illegal deployment of #adblock detection technologies.
Under Article 5(3) of 2002/58/EC YouTube are legally obligated to obtain consent before storing or accessing information already stored on an end user's terminal equipment unless it is strictly necessary for the provisions of the requested service.
In 2016 the EU Commission confirmed in writing that adblock detection requires consent.
This is the latest #youtube "innovation". #Google with a market cap of $1.7 trillion and $120 billion cash on hand, "needs" to charge for ads on YouTube.
This is, of course, not true. They have more than enough revenue to run YouTube without ads in perpetuity, but they want to please shareholders. The #Peertube community is showing how you can distribute the costs of hosting content as well. If you don't support Google's continued monetization of monopolized video...vote with your feet.

#Meta, #Tumblr, et al, are saying that they're joining the Fediverse (I'll believe it when I see it) and everyone is trying to figure out how best to deal with that.
Meanwhile, #Spotify and #YouTube have already #EEE #Podcasts by adding music podcasts that don't sync to #RSS feeds and not providing #VideoPodcasts with RSS feeds at all. No one is batting an eyelash about that!

This means huge amounts of rare or unique #video is about to disappear from #YouTube as accounts get flagged as inactive, such as when the user dies. Families' #HomeMovies (often posted by an older relative for their family's benefit), historical footage, rare #television clips, etc. What an incalculable loss to human #history and culture!
If there are videos important to you on someone else's video channel, find a way to download them. And if you have rare #media of historical importance, consider leaving it to institutional #archives or lending it to archives for digital preservation.
