Still #banned on #youtube as of 4-13-2023 because they haven't addressed my appeal against their #strike for "linking to sexually explicit nudity" in my interview with my #intersex friend (the "porn" in question was to a discord server they run that serves as a resource and support group for other intersex people). Just a warning that no URL is safe in a Youtube description--those crazy kids' #algorithms will decide ANYTHING is "porn."
screenshot from my youtube studio page, showing that the appeal I filed over them banning a link to an intersex support network as "linking to nudity and sexual content" is stuck in "submitted" limbo

After just a month away from #twitter, I'm only now starting to appreciate how extremely damaging these content delivery #algorithms are. The more I talk to younger people about their relationship to #SocialMedia, the more lean towards #policy which would put substantive constraints on companies who knowingly manipulate the human reward/dopaminergic system. The wholesale import of all the vile tools of the casino industry into the distribution of information is truly wrecking our brains.

And still, what has #email become but a despairing medium requiring layers of centralized and personally applied #filters, #rules and #algorithms to crudely finesse out 0.1% of “oh I want that” from the continual barrage of the #SpamPhishFraud firehose?

And we open only a fraction of what gets through—an error-prone daily routine.

Yet it’s #OpenProtocol, free, ubiquitous, and easy to use; it will outlive us all.

What lessons should we learn from it?

Algorithms will always reflect the biases of its creators, even if they have the best of intentions. And tech has always had big gaps in race & gender so #algorithms inevitably reflect the biases of cis white men & their privileges.

Rather than shooting for a ‘better’ algorithm, we - and society as a whole - are better off connecting with people in greater depth.
