#Meta and #Yandex are de-anonymizing #Android users’ #web browsing #identifiers

source: https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/06/meta-and-yandex-are-de-anonymizing-android-users-web-browsing-identifiers/

#Tracking code that Meta and #Russia - based Yandex embed into millions of websites is de-anonymizing visitors by abusing legitimate #Internet protocols, causing #Chrome and other browsers to surreptitiously send unique identifiers to native apps installed on a device, researchers have discovered. #Google says it's investigating the abuse, which allows Meta and Yandex to convert ephemeral web identifiers into persistent #mobile #app user identities.

Among other things, Meta is now making it mandatory to store voice recordings from their Rayban "smart" glasses in the Meta cloud, and making Meta AI's ability to train and see through your lenses "always on" unless you disable it each time manually.

Gonna be honest, any time someone with Raybans talks to me, I'm going to ask them to remove the glasses.

Open letter to anyone with a protest or rights-based website:

PLEASE get rid of Facebook and Google SSO login options and analytic tracking codes from your sites.

You are literally handing over your user data to unscrupulous players that are in direct opposition to your cause. These sites can and do hand over user-specific data.

To everyone, stop using these options. Set a strong password. Use an alias email. Use a VPN.

Amazon is going to be disabling the privacy feature that processes voice commands locally on Echo devices at the end of this month. Instead, all voice commands will be sent to Amazon's cloud for processing.

I have already followed my own steps to remediate this:

1. Unplug Echo Device
2. Throw Echo Device in Trash
3. Done

#amazon #echo #privacy

Dear Echo Customer,

We are reaching out to let you know that the Alexa feature 'Do Not Send Voice Recordings' that you enabled on your supported Echo device(s) will no longer be available beginning March 28th, 2025. This feature allowed compatible Echo devices to process the audio of Alexa requests locally on device. As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative AI features that rely on the processing power of Amazon’s secure cloud, we have decided to no longer support this feature.

If you do not take action, your Alexa Settings will automatically be updated to ‘Don’t save recordings.’ This means that, starting on March 28th, your voice recordings will be sent to and processed in the cloud, and they will be deleted after Alexa processes your requests. Any previously saved voice recordings will also be deleted. If your voice recordings setting is updated to ‘Don’t save recordings,’ voice ID will not work and you will not be able to create a voice ID for individual users to access more personalized features. If you do not want to set your voice recordings setting to ‘Don’t save recordings,’ please follow these steps before March 28th:

1. Open the Alexa App on your Mobile Phone
2. Go to Settings > Device Settings and select the device where this feature is enabled
3. Select 'Do Not Send Voice Recordings' from the menu
4. Disable the setting

Public or private?

I would like to know when a post is private or not. So, is this correct?:

  • To mention an individual user, I type: @username@instance.tld
  • To mention a group (a subaccount used as a forum or a community) I type: !groupname@instance.tld

When I use '!', the message gets posted directly to that group. It ensures that all group members see the post. If the group is private, the message will be visible only to group members. If the group is public, the message will be visible to everyone (including non-members and possibly search engines).

Is the use of @ or ! the same as choosing 'Limited/Private' on the Permissions-tab?

Thanks,
Kind regards,
Erik

🎈 US Cloud soon illegal? Trump punches first hole in EU-US Data Deal
—noyb.eu

「 This deal was always built on sand, but the EU business lobby and the European Commission wanted it anyways. Instead of stable legal limitations, the EU agreed to executive promises that can be overturned in seconds. Now that the first Trump waves hit this deal, it quickly throws many EU businesses into a legal limbo 」

Alright I'm gonna put a bigger effort to switch to Signal this time around and get a few friends roped in. I installed the APK just recently. I have some questions and am hoping some of y'all fedibrains would have an answer.

1. Is there any privacy difference between Signal from the Google Play store vs installing the APK from Github?

2. Given how locked down iPhones are, could that make Signal inherently less private?

3. Are calls also e2e encrypted?

4. Is it safe to put my Signal username on my bio? Or should that only ever be shared in private?

5. Can anyone with my Signal username also see what name I set as my first name?

Some of these questions might be dumb because I'm still learning the ropes. Thanks in advance!

Happy New Year everyone! Just in time to start off the 2025 new year (over here on the pacific coast anyways), Tenacity 1.3.4 has been released! This release contains numerous bug fixes and improvements across all sorts of platforms. Please see https://codeberg.org/tenacityteam/tenacity/releases/tag/v1.3.4 for more information. After checking about:config, "Hide weather on New Tab" sets the config value "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.showWeather" to "false", but leaves "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.weatherfeed" as the default of "true". So, my suspicion was correct, #Firefox is still sending your location off every 30 minutes to get the weather in the background by default even if you disable this new widget: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/components/newtab/lib/WeatherFeed.sys.mjs #infosec #privacy
a screenshot of Firefox's about:config after hiding the weather widget, showing weatherfeed unmodified as true and showWeather modified to false.

Youtube is doing its best and most aggressive lately to protect their ad platform. Third party services that allow you to watch youtube videos without ads or being tracked are suffering. Invidious, Newpipe, Freetube and the like.

Now Peertube is being affected and users cannot synchronize their youtube account with their peertube one. Basically a peertube instance has an IP, and google sees that this IP is trying to grab videos from their ad platform. So they blacklist the IP. Unfortunately we can't do much.

Nothing will change until we are brave enough to move to peertube entirely or similar platforms.

Therefore our https://videos.trom.tf/ is currently unable to import videos from youtube. And we may not be able to fix this.

#peertube #youtube #privacy

A reminder that our tromsite.com domain is blocked by Google and thus we cannot send any emails form our tromsite.com domain to any Gmail accounts... We have tried to fix this but so far no luck.

Google is an ad company so better not use Gmail in the first place.

Does your public library use Overdrive/Libby for ebooks or audiobooks? ⚠️

In the US and Canada, the answer is probably yes. And you should speak to your library staff and commission about it.

Libby is now owned by a private equity firm & making sketchy changes: https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

The latest development is that their overbroad privacy policy allows them to sell your borrowing history to advertisers: https://infosec.exchange/@longobord/112243098104196246

#Apple, #Google, and Meta are failing #DMA compliance, #EU suspects

Not even three weeks after the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) took effect, the #EuropeanCommission (EC) announced Monday that it is already probing three out of six gatekeepers—Apple, Google, and Meta—for suspected non-compliance.

Privacy tip: When you sell or trade-in a vehicle, remember to erase all of your data from the in-car electronics. The car dealerships will NOT do this, although they should be required to.

This wasn’t done for the last few vehicles I’ve purchased. I know one previous owners name, where she lives, what her taste in music is, where her dad lives (and how often she visited him), and what restaurants she often went to. In the wrong hands, this is dangerous as hell.
