"WhatsApp cannot be trusted, because META (Facebook) is likely spying on everyone."
"Oh yeah, totally! They're working closely with the United States government, and who knows what they'll do now that they've embraced fascism?!"
"So, what should we use?"
"I have an idea! Let's use Signal — supposedly super secret and private — but also based in the United States. And let’s just completely ignore that fact."
"Sounds good to me!"
🤦
I don’t understand — perhaps I never will — why, when people are given unlimited choices, society collectively picks the dumb one.
There are alternatives, and they’re outside the reach of the United States:

Perusing a paper paper for once I saw this advert for WhatsApp.
No I can believe the content of your message can not be read, but by using it, your address book is theirs, your messages sent/received are logged and you will be tracked wherever you are - and whatever you are buying.
That’s what they really want.
Go #Signal - it makes sense
#whatsapp claims end to end security of content but:
- ties your identity to a phone number
- owns your identity
- can see who messages whom and who is in which group etc
- forces you to send local search in your private chats to Meta AI
- does not allow to disable Meta AI on the main screen
None of these problems exist with #deltachat devs and distributors. We have arguably the world's easiest onboarding process for a messenger that offers a Whatsapp style interface on all platforms.

I had announced this move weeks ago, mentioning I would be available via the usual channels (phone, email, etc.) and also via #matrix. That's it. No preaching, no convincing, no expectations.
To my surprise, more than 10% of the 100+ contacts I notified, downloaded #element and all my "important" contacts are now on Matrix!
I'm thrilled!
I’m pretty sure they didn’t.
I’d say it was because networks were charging up to £0.20 per SMS and £0.50 per MMS whereas WhatsApp allowed you to send as many messages as you like across WiFi or on your data package.
