This is so confusing. There are many free things where you are not "the product". We make many, see https://www.tromsite.com and https://trom.tf.

I wish people would stop saying this about google and the like. There is a simple and to the point way of describing these "free" services. They are TRADE-BASED. You have to trade something to them, in order to use their services.

In the same way that when you go to a supermarket you have to trade your currency for what you grab from it, you have to trade your attention (ads) or data to Google when you go on their platform. Currency, attention, data.

We live in a TRADE-BASED society where pretty much everything is trade-based. Money is just a currency we invented, but trades go without currency as well.

We spent more than a decade trying to shed some light on this confusion.

When is a research paper not a research paper? When a big tech company uses a preprint server as a means to dodge peer review -- in this case, of their wild speculations on the 'dangerous capabilities' of large language models. Ali Alkhatib joins Emily to explain why a recent Google DeepMind document about the hunt for evidence that LLMs might intentionally deceive us was bad science, and yet is still influencing the public conversation about AI.

Ali Alkhatib is a computer scientist and former director of the University of San Francisco’s Center for Applied Data Ethics. His research focuses on human-computer interaction, and why our technological problems are really social – and why we should apply social science lenses to data work, algorithmic justice, and even the errors and reality distortions inherent in AI models.

Tracking-URL-Popup

Tracking-URLs werden sehr konservativ erkannt und es erscheint ein Warndialog. Da auch die meisten Suchen als Tracking-URL eingestuft werden, empfiehlt es sich, die Profileinstellungen entsprechend anzupassen. Standardmäßig werden die Warndialoge für sichere Internetseiten deaktiviert sein. Das nötige Wissen, wie man die Trackingurls erkennt, stellt Google freundlicherweise auf einer eigenen Internetseite zur Verfügung. Eigentlich ist die Seite zwar dafür gedacht, solche URLs zu erstellen und nicht zu verhindern. Wie dem auch sei, danke an Google an dieser Stelle.😉

Seulement voilà, il n'y a rien de magique : une fois le VPN atteint, celui-ci devra atteindre les destinations (n'importe quelle requête #HTTP par exemple) de façon régulière. Le VPN n'ajoute absolument aucune couche de #sécurité entre lui-même et la destination finale, c'est seulement votre connexion au VPN qui est une étape supplémentaire chiffrée.

Traduction : le #profilage de google n'est pas empêché par un VPN.

Do you remember hearing the news of #Google trying to enable #telemetry by default in the #Go programming language? Apparently they've been doing the same with their #Flutter UI toolkit all this time 😐 Their docs also mention that "By downloading or using the Flutter SDK you agree to the Google Terms of Service." - linking to Google's general terms and service policy at https://policies.google.com/terms

This is a github issue requesting Flutter to make their #analytics opt-in for complying with EU/ECC laws (#GDPR). That issue was closed in 2021, now three years later and the telemetry is still there enabled by default. And even if you try to opt-out they'll still ping Google's servers to let them know you've opted out, as per their docs.

When Google tried to add telemetry to the Go language last year it made news and there was significant backlash from the community, enough for them to reverse course and make their telemetry opt-in rather than turning data collection on by default - https://www.theregister.com/2023/05/17/googles_go_data_collection/
Unfortunately the same didn't happen with Dart/Flutter so far, which means you're likely to face more data collection there by default.

Google, Yahoo! und Bing haben heute angekündigt, dass sie beim Thema Websemantics zukünftig zusammen arbeiten werden und sich auf einen gemeinsamen Standard einigen wollen (wie vorher auch bei den Sitemaps, robots.txt, um.).

Auf schema.org findet man eine Übersicht alle Schemas die die Suchgiganten in Zukunft unterstützen werden:

Was mich besonders freut: Die Schemas basieren alle auf Microdata und wer meinen Blog regelmäßig verfolgt wird wissen, dass ich das Format sehr schätze! Hier ein Beispiel wie eine Person mit dem neuen Schema aussieht:

Soweit so gut, aber… es werden WIEDER einmal weder bestehende Microformats, noch RDFa Schemas auf Microdata portiert, was dazu führt dass mir spontan 5 unterschiedliche Formate einfallen um Personen zu beschreiben: hCard (Microformats), Data-Vocabulary (RDFa- und Microdata-Beschreibung genutzt von den rich-snippets), FoaF (RDFa), vCard (RDFa), schema.org (Microdata).

Die Microformats-Community hat von Anfang an eines richtig gemacht: Es gibt nur eine Stelle an der Microformats definiert werden und man muss einen relativ langwierigen Prozess befolgen um ein neues Format zu definieren. Das führt zwar dazu dass es bisher nur eine handvoll Schemas veröffentlicht wurden, diese aber wohl definiert sind und in der Regel auf bisherigen Formaten aufbauen. Die hCard ist beispielsweise ein 1:1 Abbild der vCard.

Schema.org ist zwar eine ganz nette Idee aber man hat leider versäumt sich mit der Microformats-, RDFa-, RDF- Community zusammenzusetzen und einen gemeinsamen Konsens zu finden!

Wäre folgendes Beispiel so viel komplizierter?

Yahoo! zählt knapp zwei Milliarden hCards in ihrem Index und trotzdem diktiert man Webseitenbetreibern etwas komplett anderes auf…

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin #uBO will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 (#Mv3).

The new #Chrome manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only #Google authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube #AdBlockers .

#ManifestV3 is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to #Firefox (@mozilla) and/or #TorBrowser (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

#Google continues to push ahead with its ill-advised scheme to force passkeys on users who do not understand their risks, and will try push all users into this flawed system starting imminently.

In my discussions with Google on this matter (I have chatted multiple times with the Googler in charge of this), they have admitted that their implementation, by depending completely on device authentication security which for many users is extremely weak, will put many users at risk of their Google accounts being compromised. However, they feel that overall this will be an improvement for users who have strong authentication on their devices.

And as for ordinary people who already are left behind by Google when something goes wrong? They'll get the shaft again. Google has ALWAYS operated on this basis -- if you don't fit into their majority silos, they just don't care. Another way for Google users to get locked out of their accounts and lose all their data, with no useful help from Google.

With Google's deficient passkey system implementation -- they refuse to consider an additional authentication layer for protection -- anyone who has authenticated access to your device (that includes the creep that watched you access your phone in that bar before he stole it) will have full and unrestricted access to your Google passkeys and accounts on the same basis. And when you're locked out, don't complain to Google, because they'll just say that you're not the user that they're interested in -- if they respond to you at all, that is.
