I hear a lot about reconnecting with old communities after moving over to #Mastodon but less about this being a huge moment for new communities to be formed

which is to say,

RISE UP, my fellow "eating a whole handful of cheese out the bag of shredded cheese while standing in the kitchen leaning over your nachos", our time is nigh!

I appreciate that this is going to upset some people, and I thought I was too shy to say it, but I prefer #BlueSky over #Mastodon:

Here's why:

The coolest thing about #Fediverse & #Mastodon user numbers (a topic of much discussion in the tech media) is that for those of us here, if we're enjoying the interactions (I know I am) and feeling like it's a 'better place', it will continue to attract others to join in.

I dearly hope many others, especially in under-represented groups, seize the unprecedented opportunity the Fediverse represents: to create a space that meets all their needs far better than any corporation could.

I have seen people on #Mastodon refer to #EugenRochko as 'Website Boy' and also #ElonMusk as 'Rocket Boy' and whilst I'm sure some people use them terms in a belittling way, it just makes me imagine them both as rival comic book characters.
A photo of Eugen Rochko, founder of Mastodon. He's a white dude wearing spectacles and is dressed quite plainly in a coat, stood outside in a park which is surrounded by trees.
A photo of Elon Musk, the name associated with big companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and now Twitter. He stands in front of a red Tesla car with his hands in his pockets as a bunch of nerds take photos of him through the windows at the back of the scene.

You know from websites, if there is a link or an embedded element that guides you to another website, there is a note telling you that you load external stuff or you are led to another website.

I think it would be a good addon or feature, if all projects in the #fediverse #friendica #mastodon #pleroma #hubzilla #misskey would start to mark such links especially to facebook, instagram, tiktok, twitter, google and so on with a warn sign, that your data will be collected and you will be definitely tracked.

I am writing this because there is an increasing number of people posting on such networks and spamming the fediverse with links and urls teasing the contents on those networks that you only can see on those networks.

How do you think about that?

Just a reminder.

Readers for accessibility cannot parse tags that are many words all in lowercase letters. So, if you think about it, try to type out tags using uppercase letters to delineate words.

Now for a different take on decentralization and mastodon: Mastodon Is Doomed: https://justingarrison.com/blog/2023-04-24-mastodon-is-doomed/ #linux #update #foss #mastodon #socialnetwork #decentralization #future

a 10 second meme I made about NPR allegedly joining #Mastodon / the #fediverse . Wouldn't an org that big make its own instance? Or at the very least, join the same instance that other large publications have been joining?
A "suspicious Fry" meme I made with the caption "me when a new account on the fediverse claims to belong to a large journalistic publication...but they made an account on @mastodon.social"

@Matthias ✔ Wird ein #Mastodon Account [abstrakt] schon sehen oder erst [abstract=apub] ?

@Matthias ✔ Guten Morgen Matthias. Vielen Dank für den Link. Die #Abstrakt Funktion arbeitet dann aber nur #friendica bezogen und andere Dienste wie z.B. #mastodon sehen das trotzdem roh ?

Do you feel like you can influence the direction of the fediverse?

Either through direct contribution as a developer, providing feedback, making feature requests, etc.

  • Not really (52%, 135 votes)

#Mastodon question: is it possible to block someone's replies but still let them follow you? There's an account I follow on mastodon.social but none of the rare replies I post on their posts end up showing in the mastodon side conversation.

I don't mind the existence of the feature, I'd just like to know if it's expected or if it possibly is a #Friendica federation issue.

Is there a #mastodon hashtag or instance or other community connection for people with chronic illness who have been somewhat isolated by covid but still need social contact & interaction? A loved one would potentially find this really helpful.

I’m not sure what hashtags to use for this question so please comment with them if you know any.

There is a lot of talk on the #fediverse #mastodon about how #media sites should own their web/social presence and their audiences, by self-hosting.

Case in point,
@TexasObserver

But why stop there?

We should also be promoting the use of #peertube as a home for organizations to OWN their video presence as well.

Here's a great example of a media organization doing just that:

If you speak any French, you can follow them here: @blast_info

Fully nomadic Mastodon fork!

Someone seems to have succeeded in forking #Mastodon and migrating the fork to #Nomad, the underlying protocol of #Streams which provides #NomadicIdentity. There's little information about what exactly is going on, only a tech demo video exists on PeerTube. It shows two test instances and the exact same account with the exact same identity running on both, remaining fully in sync. So yes, it's nomadic.

The choice of Nomad instead of #Zot is understandable as it has better integrated #ActivityPub support, so there might not be much incompatibility between vanilla Mastodon and the fork, and it'll stay compatible with the rest of the #Fediverse. Compatibility with #Hubzilla and especially (streams) will even be enhanced, not only because the fork finally recognises nomadic channels, but also also because it clearly features text formatting and quotes. It remains to be seen whether the handling of embedded images will be improved, too.

This is still very experimental, and more information has been announced to follow soon.

I've been running user-testing on the process of signing-up onto the #Fediverse (including #Mastodon , #Pixelfed , and others).

My tests suggest a lot (probably most) people find it very difficult & confusing.

I think most people who try to sign-up — fail and give up.

Which means that if about 2,000 people are joining the Fediverse every hour, then — A LOT more than that tried to join, failed, and gave up.

The good news is — the sign-up user-experience ( #UX ) process can be improved.

Czy zawalasz przestrzeń "u siebie" czy nie, i tak warto się dorzucić i wszystko jest fair.

Na #mastodon wideo chodzą fajnie. Jak dodasz własny hashtag, możesz do niego pociągnąć RSS. To daje możliwości szerszej integracji z innymi usługami.

Tak samo mastodon fajnie obsługuje pliki audio. Prawie podcast można tu zrobić bez większego wysiłku.

@mason

Here's few words about #accessibility, specifically #CamelCase and #altText on #Mastodon. From a pragmatic as well as ethical point of view. If you are already signed up on ethical grounds, good job, let's keep at it!

Pragmatically: If you are not writing for an audience outside of people you personally know then there is a non zero chance you will have someone with difficulty seeing or with dyslexia try to read your work. Effective communicators remove barriers for their audiences.

The rise of the Fediverse is only accelerating as companies like Mozilla and WordPress make moves to support it. Even Meta is rumored to be working on a decentralized social network.

But there's one particular start-up that seems determined to go its own way.

I spoke with @tchambers and @evan about what's driving the Fediverse migration - and the obstacles that can thwart some would-be users.

Re-inventing the federated wheel because you don't know that wheels exist

Replying to all the random individuals that seem to think that I’m “endorsing” one of the Fediverse products over any other, and seem to be making a big deal over #akkoma vs #mastodon etc.

That’s not the case. I’m actually a horrible MIS person, and I would never want to maintain my own server. I’m a programmer for chrissake!

The same way you should fear me if I hold a soldering iron, you should be very very nervous if I were to do any server management.

So all credit (or blame) for the choice of Fediverse platform goes to @monsieuricon, who maintains kernel.org and just made it really easy for me to try this out.

… and on a similar note: not only am I not much of a MIS person, I’m also not much of a social networking person.

I foresee a lot of disappointment in the future of any followers of this account 🔮.

Just thought I'd try #Soapbox from @alex out as #Hubzilla is stuck in 90s design and decidedly user-unfriendly. I'd been eyeing #Mastodon for over a year and this is so much more refined with elegant design. Anyone out there running their own instance?

Why doesn't #mastodon support #svg as an attached media format ? This is an efficient, safe (if you display svg inside <img>), commonly supported format by browsers. It can even display #animations without using javascript. If I could attach this svg image: https://miklobit.pl/direct/svg/oclogo_anim.svg directly it would take 13kB and could be vector scaled without loss of quality. Rendered in poor quality it takes 1MB ( ~75x more !).

Picture placement compatibility test

It's one thing for a #Mastodon user to ask another Mastodon users to use CW because neither have user-defined filters that could do the same, but it's a little irritating to me when a Mastodon user makes a similar request to a #Friendica user because we do have extensive user-defined filters.

I know, I know. #Fediverse #Rant
