Now for a different take on decentralization and mastodon: Mastodon Is Doomed: https://justingarrison.com/blog/2023-04-24-mastodon-is-doomed/ #linux #update #foss #mastodon #socialnetwork #decentralization #future
me on my years old low budget Pleroma/Akkoma instance running on the electronic equivalent of a potato:

😛cpleroma: :meowtea: sure thing, mate.
not even that, like, even if instances die, even big ones, the network remains, and people can migrate
it sucks when that happens but I learned not to take fedi too seriously or treat it like a cultural archive. Posts here are meant to be eventually ephemeral and that's fine.

that's a good lesson, the thing is that "mastodon is doomed" is pretty much same as "twitter is doomed". Things are born and things die, so it's important to pass on the DNA. For us it's the ActivityPub (and OStatus). Twitter doesn't have exit strategy, no DNA to pass on, no legacy, just tiny fragments of it. Cathedrals crumble, but bazaars pop up and close, and are ever-shifting. Much like merchants on bazaars are driven by desire for profit, we on fediverse are driven by desire to shitpost.
