Why the fediverse is so tough to earn money...

Because it's born with the idea that against big techs... That means the user base of it is VERY "tough". If you ban a person for his political views, he will let everyone to know it and give you an evil reputation, but if you don't ban some certain political views, you can't please some people to let them pay to you.

There are mentals of extreme rights and extreme lefts. If someone sees another group did something illegal on your instance, he would love to see you met FBI. Fediverse is "balance of terror". Some as child porn posters and child porn haters. The legal risk is too high. Except you open a 1 instance for yourself and few friends to use only.

A better strategy is data mining. I am not an expert of data mining, don't know it worth how much money. But if your instance is a very lack of people to use (under 1000 users posted a post), it won't be a lot of money.

Open an instance to earn big money is very unlikely, but I can still see few cases can get that little money.

@Gargron: he didn't get the money from running an instance, the reason of he got the money is that he coded #mastodon. And he found out only middle class "left" extremists would most likely to pay most money to him, therefore he want to build mastodon.social to be a echo chamber by banning people they might dislike and don't want people to think too much and @ too much by the 500 characters limit. Lead to the development of #Pleroma and #Glitch because he is too suck. But this is his biggest effort to getting money from #fediverse. I think he needs tastytea to help him point out which person should get a ban there. Of course, he won't list it with transparency. #introductions Better late than never, I'm Hypolite Petovan, this isn't my official name but it is my real name for all intents and purposes. I joined the #Fediverse on #Diaspora then #Friendica late 2016 after #Facebook froze my account for using this pseudonym for 10 years straight.

My social media policy is to read absolutely everything my follows post. As a result, I heavily curate my follow list that will never grow bigger than what it is now mainly for time constraints. Additionally, I don't automatically follow back and unfollowing isn't personal, your content just doesn't fit with my social media usage, no hard feelings.

I like liberally to signify I read, enjoyed or sympathize with a post without having anything meaningful to contribute further.

I also block liberally, users and whole instances alike, the world is too big and my time is too limited to give a second chance to bigots, racists, misogynists and transphobes (including TERFs). I host my own single-user node which makes any moderation decision easy.

My own editorial line is mainly about good-natured humor and social justice. Tone-wise, I do not mind aggressiveness but I do mind who it is targeted at. I do not tolerate edgy shitpost, and neither bad faith nor logical fallacies no matter how soft-spoken they are.

My personal interests revolve around #programming (mainly #PHP for #Friendica ), #videogames and recently #LEGO, but I'm curious about everything and have trouble specializing in anything and don't follow the latest news for any specific topic.
