So what happened in the #Facebook #meta #fediverse conference call yesterday? Has someone from our (the fediverse) side put out a blog post? Or did the NDA work?

Content warning: synopsis Of Meta invasion and bad faith in the fedi. a novel.

Logged on #Facebook with my partner's credentials to handle Marketplace orders (for my LEGO sets) while she's away at a work conference, then browsed to an Instagram reel for completely different reasons, and #Instagram shows me a banner prompting me to log in as my partner's account.

IT ISN'T THE SAME FUCKING WEBSITE! 🤬

I do understand #Google cross-login between apps because they're all under the same google.com domain, so cookies can work across apps, but between facebook.com and instagram.com? I hate it.

oh, here's some JUICY rumored details about meta's plans for the fediverse

tl;dr "Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners."

can't entirely verify their validity but it's still worth posting just in case

You make some strong arguments here. It's great to see you laying out your reasoning in detail and with passion. theart: That's the spirit. What | have learned, however, is that Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners. Meta positions itself as a “savior’, because especially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything. In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding the moderation. Instances will have the option of allowing ads from Meta or not (with the benefit of additional compensation). Smaller instances will have the possibility to register for a federation with Meta in a second step, but there will be no financial compensation and Meta decides if they will grant access based on their reputation.
Regarding Meta, I'm in the industry for 25 years and have a few friends who worked at Meta from the early years until recently. One s stil there. Regarding UFol, | was part of the disussion at the time, we held a vote at Emacs.ch P R S But don' take this at face value, obvisouly these admins have to sign harsh NDAS. But it sounded very credible and | could not imagine it going any ther way. Examples of big instances (from Japan | believe?) show that the long-term burdens are simply unbearable and operators just wait for the right moment to e 1donot critizise Meta for their attempt to use the favor of the hour to their ‘advantage. As a public corporation its theijob to make proft. As I said, its not them who will decide the fate of the Fediverse. ‘Overworked/stressed out admins, high costs for infrastructure, ongoing disputes ‘and moderation challenges are what threaten the Fediverse. It was not meant to ‘9row o fast before we find common solutions for these issues. What do you think?

With 1.3 mn active users, #Mastodon is but an ant in comparison to the 3,000 mn users of #Facebook.

#FB was created as a macho website and it's become a toxic space.

Maybe the #Fediverse should have a vote if it really wants to be hooked up to such a place?

Any individuals would still be free to join.

If #Meta were #Twitter, I'm sure about the vote.
#Meta is in the same league, though.

#FOSS does not mean that corporations can all join, regardless of their behavior + agenda.

An ant is about 0.52 - 0.75 milimeters, an anteater up to 1.4 meters, so there are more than 2.200 active FB users for every active user of Mastodon in comparison.

#Instagram blocked my account without mentioning why. I am not posting or commenting so it is not obvious to me why they blocked me. Maybe because I am not using the app and only a browser. However, to unlock my account I should send them my phone number and a selfi of me with my account name, my real name and a pin they sent me written on a paper which I should hold.
What the f***? This is crazy!
I have now told them to delete my account and I also deleted my #Facebook account.

Only just spotted this.

@Casey Newton writes that Facebook/Meta is now trying to get on the "decentralized network" bandwagon greenwashing too. It is always fascinating to me how very not decentralized all of these things end up looking: from the web3 nonsense, to BlueSky, to now whatever the hell they plan on calling this. "Well you see akshully the technology allows for decentralization therefore it is decentralized even though we control 99.9% of it!" You know what else is a decentralized technology? The world wide web and HTTP. Hopefully the fediverse fix some of our shortcoming before the world buys the techbro bullshit so they can get another successful market monopoly operation. #facebook #meta #SurveillanceCapitalism #decentralization #fediverse https://www.platformer.news/p/meta-is-building-a-decentralized

People need to understand.

#Google isn't a search engine.
#Facebook isn't a journal to share with your friend.
#Instagram isn't a public photo album.
#Twitter isn't a micro-blogging website.

They are all advertisement companies.

It looks like the #Twitter API changes towards a mostly paid model have been pushed from today to February 13th, but I didn't want to take any chances and I went forward and deleted all my tweets yesterday night, as well as severing my #Friendica connector.

It definitely feels different than when my #Facebook account was frozen in 2016 for using this pseudonym I've worn for 17 years now. Back then, I was just brutally faced with the facts, I didn't have any agency which made the move to the #Fediverse straightforward, I didn't have any other choice.

This time, I've had to actually make up my mind about leaving Twitter and stick to my plan in the face of an ever-volatile platform constantly backtracking their most unpopular decisions. It wasn't an easy decision, I had made a few organic connections on there, but I guess even I had to draw a line in the sand.

@bitwarden I have set up the following in the event of my #death:
• #Apple #iCloud Legacy Contact: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212360
• #Bitwarden Emergency Access: https://bitwarden.com/help/emergency-access/
• #ProtonMail and #Proton services in general do not have a specific feature tailored to this, but I do have recovery information safely stored and available by other means.

I had set up #Facebook per their instructions, but I no longer see the option in my settings. I wonder what happened. https://facebook.com/help/991335594313139/

Meta: 3-4% of users’ feeds is #news.

Pew: 31% of American adults say they regularly get news from Facebook.

So either #Meta and Americans define news differently, the small amount of news shared on #Facebook has an outsized impact, or likely, a bit of both.

That said, during the last two multi-hour Facebook outages, direct and total visitors to our legacy local news sites went up.

It’s more evidence that communities will seek out impactful content.

I love this article that not only clearly explains what #mastodon is, but also why it's so much better than ad-driven engagement-focused centralized media like #twitter, #facebook, #instagram, #youtube, etc etc etc. Check it out! https://escapingtech.com/tech/opinions/i-was-wrong-about-mastodon-moderation.html
