It looks like the #Twitter API changes towards a mostly paid model have been pushed from today to February 13th, but I didn't want to take any chances and I went forward and deleted all my tweets yesterday night, as well as severing my #Friendica connector.

It definitely feels different than when my #Facebook account was frozen in 2016 for using this pseudonym I've worn for 17 years now. Back then, I was just brutally faced with the facts, I didn't have any agency which made the move to the #Fediverse straightforward, I didn't have any other choice.

This time, I've had to actually make up my mind about leaving Twitter and stick to my plan in the face of an ever-volatile platform constantly backtracking their most unpopular decisions. It wasn't an easy decision, I had made a few organic connections on there, but I guess even I had to draw a line in the sand.

A hashtag is the fundamental unit of Web Magic, once understood. Basically, name things using hyperlinks (ideally, #HTTP variety) and connectivity magic happens, at Web-scale.

@John Conway Your whole post hinges on growth being desirable. However, with no profit incentive on the #Fediverse, there's no need for growth either. Commercial social networks spend so much on growth and retention because it's integral to their business model, not in their users' best interest, see the toxic culture fostered on Instagram.

I've been thinking about the lack of algorithmic* feeds in the #Fediverse and wondering how much that is hurting growth and retention. Big social media spend billions on getting and keeping eyeballs, and algorithmic timelines are a huge part of that.

I think it's right to avoid it, but I worry that will just forever stunt growth. The alternative is human curators, I think, but I have no idea how to make that happen.

*Yes, I know reverse chronological is an algorithm, algo-pedants.

I present the first named release of the Friendica mobile/desktop client: Relatica. It is still very much a work in progress but I'm going to start opening it up for beta usage (early beta). For iOS that will mean me letting up to 100 people into the inside testing team (Apple's limit). For the other platforms I'll be posting binaries/packages/install instructions for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows in the coming days as well. I have been largely keeping out of the debate about #fediverse “governance”. As someone who has participated in OSS governance systems I see the value of them and I do think a #fediverse foundation could be a good idea. More importantly I think now that the overall #activitypub system is being used so much more there will be a need to revise and extend the protocol and for that we will need @w3c activity (workshop / working group).

when I click a #Fediverse post link in #Firefox it opens in @Fedilab Apps, but it only works to load the post if a Mastodon account is selected and not if a Friendica account is active.

How can we trouble shoot this? @Fedilab Apps what does #Fedilab do with such a link, which API call does it perform to retrieve the post?

The problem as I see it is very much not the information or technology itself, but the very real ways in which corporations have poured billions of dollars into hijacking the #brain.
