#Introduction - I'm Congress member Ritchie Torres from #NewYork , The past few days here have been great, I want to keep building our platform here on #Mastodon to make sure we can continue our conversations on a public social media platform.

Can you please BOOST this post and FOLLOW our account and encourage your followers to do the same? Thank you.

⚠️ WARNING! ⚠️

I just received this email in a catch-all that was addressed to a user. Mastodon does NOT such mails and this leads to a malicious login page!

Please make sure you are on the correct instance URL before logging in!

Also make sure the emails are send from the instance you are on! Often this email can be found on the /about page

Action Needed in header, this is not a Mastodon email!

I'm pessimistic about the chances of a federated Twitter gaining and sustaining wide adoption. But I could be wrong, and I'd love to be wrong. So in the spirit of contributing rather than just whining, I wrote up a few thoughts.

Don't let federation make the experience suck.

The problem as I see it is very much not the information or technology itself, but the very real ways in which corporations have poured billions of dollars into hijacking the #brain. After a month on #Mastodon, I think decentralized, not for profit social media like the #fediverse is the massive, accidental #PublicHealth intervention we really need right now.

If you're part of the #TwitterMigration and still getting a feel for what makes #Mastodon different (like me!) here's another reason why it's better not to have the option to #QuoteRetweet.

When we quote retweet on the birdsite, it's usually about adding our own commentary:
🐦 THIS is why this is important to ME...
🐦 MY opinion is more compelling because...
🐦 THAT'S NOTHING! Listen to MY story...

When we quote retweet, we take someone else's post and make it about US. This can get problematic when the original tweet was from from a #bipoc, #indigenous, #LGBTQPlus, or other #marginalized or #vulnerable person.

When we boost a toot, we're using OUR voices and influence to amplify others'. And we're doing so on their terms, not our own. If we feel strongly about the original post, we can always add our own voices to the conversation, but without using our #privilege to talk over people who might need to be heard more than us.

This is especially for folks just discovering The Conversation on #Mastodon - but anyone curious about the world will find it interesting and informative reading.

We've collected 8 of our most popular articles of the year in links, and in a downloadable PDF.

Among them:
🦟 The science of mosquito magnets
🔭 The search for super-earths
🌋 Why we can't just throw all our trash into volcanoes to get rid of it

All written by experts.

We joined #Mastodon to avoid this kind of bullshit mass bullying. You can't argue against QTs on one hand and say you'll create a pile-up on other people on the other hand. #FediMeta

An fascinating interview with #Mastodon creator Eugen Rochko. The platform's current success isn't just the result of Elon Musk's purchase, but it's also down to years of hard work on the business and the app itself. Looking forward to seeing Mastodon's growth.

People, please start using CamelCase (aka PascalCase) to break apart words in #HashTags.

It makes it easier to read and more #accessible. Single words are OK to keep lowercase, unless they are proper nouns 😉

As an instance moderator, it makes it easier to review if you're a #MastoAdmin.

#CamelCaseAllTheHashTags

#Mastodon #HashTag #accessibilty

@jamesbritt also shared you can #Use_The_Underbar!

Please #boost this for visibility and to help improve the lives of many people.

My interview with @blaine, who was there at the very beginning of Twitter; now he's focused on building #fediverse infrastructure that will help #Mastodon scale. https://thenewstack.io/why-a-twitter-founding-engineer-is-now-all-in-on-mastodon/

honestly, i feel like the best thing i got for #christmas this year is #mastodon

Let me put a phrase into your mind: nonconsensual virality. It's why quote-posts on Twitter led to harassment. People's words stolen, taken out of context, used purely to incite a mob of griefers. The answer is to give #Mastodon users control over whether someone else can quote-post them, with a simple "quote or not" setting that can be set before or after the post goes up. We should be allowed to stop people from taking our posts viral without our consent.

It looks nice, but without a good recommendation system to power it, I’m not sure how practical it’d be.

BTW, in #Mastodon, it sorta shows up semi randomly in the timeline, rather than at the top like it does in #TruthSocial. Is that the intended result?

That circle profile thingy reminds me of the one that’s in #TruthSocial and pops in on the timeline when using #Soapbox with #Mastodon

Tech writers:
"Mastodon is a social media platform/website/app."

Me:
"So, when are you gonna start writing articles about how Firefox is the internet? And Outlook is email?"

Tech writers:
"What?"

Me:
"What?
...also, IPhones are cell phone service, right?"

Anybody knows the reasoning behind the removal of the “Admin” label on relevant accounts in #Mastodon version 4? I thought it was a good idea.

By default, Mastodon has a 500 character limit for posts.

However, you may have seen posts with more than 500 characters.

This is possible because Mastodon is just one type of server on the Fediverse. Many of the accounts you interact with on here may be using different server types with different character limits.

For example, there are modified "forked" versions of Mastodon such as Glitch (https://glitch-soc.github.io/docs/) and Hometown (https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown) which allow server admins to easily change the character limits.

There are also completely different kinds of servers such as Friendica (https://friendi.ca) which have much larger default limits.

Because the Fediverse uses a common technical standard for communication, different kinds of servers talk to each other seamlessly, and you won't necessarily notice which server types people use. (I'm on a server running Glitch Mastodon, which is how this post can be so long.)

My "Share to Mastodon" browser extension is now available on the Chrome Web Store! It adds one-click link and tab sharing to Mastodon, either through the action button, a keyboard shortcut, or the right-click context menu.

A meme I made in reaction to all the tweeps still arguing for tight character limits on #Mastodon, claiming it "forces them to be concise" (ignoring the fact that many tweeps would just break those "concise" sentences up into dozens if not hundreds long tweet-threads...

Seriously, geniuses. No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use the entire character limit. You wanna cut your thought off at 140, 280, or 500 characters? Great! Get to it! Stop using that as a nonsense argument to force OTHERS to truncate their thoughts to match your limited attention span. 🙃

The "what if I told you" Matrix Morpheous meme, captioned with "What if I told you...you don't have to use the entire character limit?"

@bullivant I agree. We might see corporations target #Pixelfed instances next.

Also, #Mastodon admins are going to receive lucrative offers soon, & some might sell if they are unable to pay operational costs for their servers.

It will become critical for members to support their local servers.

Hello! We are a new instance for #artists and #creators, both amateur and professional. We serve the creative community and want to provide them a place to promote their work and build an audience on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse. Your fans can follow your accounts from other servers, but this is exclusively for artists and creators for now.

We're just starting out, but applications are open for artists and creators, come see us at https://artistalley.space/about

One of the benefits of #Mastodon being #OpenSource: The EU can help make it more secure.

"Awards of up to EUR 5000 are available for finding security vulnerabilities in LibreOffice, LEOS, Mastodon, Odoo and CryptPad, open source solutions used by public services across the European Union. There is a 20% bonus for providing a code fix for the bugs they discover."

You are not the audience. That is one of the most difficult lessons to learn when you’re an early career journalist in an audience role. We’re biased to assume that our experiences and motivations are similar to those of the majority. That’s not necessarily so. A good audience director is part economist, part sociologist, part anthropologist and part journalist.

@Hypolite Petovan Totally agreed! I've blocked him and I'm in the process of stopping #Mastodon altogether! 😀 Sharing his toot was a way to show people exactly that and how the #birdsite is functioning!

A billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist setting up a fediverse account isn’t the win you might think it is.

Who do you think funds and benefits from the Twitters and Facebooks of the world?

We can’t stop these folks from setting up their own servers but please don’t feel a need to federate with them or subsidise their existence on servers you pay for and maintain.

And remain vigilant against embrace, extend, and extinguish.

Paul Graham (@paulg) on Twitter on 11/16/22: “It’s remarkable how many people who've never run any kind of company think they know how to run a tech company better than someone who's run Tesla and SpaceX.”

Mastodon isn't a twitter alternative, it's its own space. This isn't twitter 2.0 so please embrace mastodon, rather than trying to rebuild twitter.

I've spent my Sunday watching videos on #ActivityPub and #ActivityStream.

I'm researching ways to implement these features into #gaming. For example #Mastodon and #PixelFed know how to communicate with each other. What if a Minecraft server knew how to talk to a Rust (the game) server?

There's a possibility for games to utilize ActivityPub/Stream and that's been a major focus of mine as of late.
