Three tips for people using #Mastodon through a computer:

1. You can stop timelines scrolling automatically by going to Preferences > Slow Mode, tick box and click "Save Changes".

2. There are loads of "hidden" keyboard shortcuts. Press shift + ? (or just ? on some keyboards) to see a complete list of them.

3. There's an optional Tweetdeck-style multicolumn interface called "advanced mode". Go to Preferences > Enable Advanced Web Interface, tick box and click "Save Changes".

Da das bei #Mastodon funktioniert, sollte es es doch bei #Friendica auch... ist technisch gewissermaßen ein Block mit Wildcard...

Dear #Americans of #Mastodon, you have a wonderful opportunity that is rarely granted to you. For the first time, you're in an online public space that is not American, that is not centered around the US, and as I'm typing this, a place where the majority of users are not Americans. You can open yourselves to the world as you've rarely been able to before.

So please, stop expressing yourselves like the US is the default country here and that most users are Americans. We're not. Love.

My team at work just launched new research on the #TwitterMigration: We analyze which platforms are growing - especially #Mastodon, #Tumblr & #Post.

We look at which sites users are adding to their Twitter bios, posting to their friends about & downloading apps for.

Please do boost this, and love to hear any comments or feedback on it!

Let me be negative for a bit:
more than 40% of the total users are on FIVE mastodon instances. In fact, more than 10% are on ONE instance.
That is NOT "decentralised", that is "centralised with minor exceptions".

(Can't say numbers since the-federation.info is ill today.)

#centralisation #mastodon #instance

I wish #mastodon language selection had auto-detection. Writing roughly half of my posts in English and the rest in German, there is a ~50% chance to get it wrong, no matter which I set as the default.

I love this article that not only clearly explains what #mastodon is, but also why it's so much better than ad-driven engagement-focused centralized media like #twitter, #facebook, #instagram, #youtube, etc etc etc. Check it out! https://escapingtech.com/tech/opinions/i-was-wrong-about-mastodon-moderation.html

Appeareance of images attached to a post

Hello @Friendica Developers @Friendica Support @https://friendica-dev.mbbit.de/profile/friendicadev Hello dear community, I would like to discuss with you about the appearance of posts with multiple images on #Friedica. Here is my opinion:
The current way multiple #images are displayed is awful:

Yeah, you saw it by my embedded examples your self. What bothers me most is:

  • It just looks messy (especially when there is a mix of landscape and portrait format)
  • Besides the aesthetics, multiple images take a lot of room (when you do not use an add-on like show more)

My suggestion on which I would love to hear your opinion is to use a grid format like on #mastodon:

I would pitch a suggestion by adding a PR for a (from my point of view) "better" appearance based to this
tutorial. I do not like to use JS in general and would leave it out by determine the suited amount of columns in the backend.

But before I invest time on that, I want to hear your feedback. Thank You!

pleading guilty for squatting after signing up when @aral mentioned it. Back then (2019?) little was happening here. Then @KAPistor announced she too was moving here and I have slowly begun posting. It will take time to get used to #Mastodon and its conventions.

I consider moving to a #singleUser #Mastodon instance under my own domain. My only concern at the moment: I really like hashtag / content search. For example I follow some hashtags and have some pinned tabs with certain #hashtags on the web interface.

This works super nice because probably almost all instances federated with mastodon.social. But I worry to miss a lot of interesting content on a single-user instance.

What is your experience?

Do you know someone who is on here but you can't find their account by searching?

Try exchanging account addresses with them, the same way you would exchange phone numbers. This is the most reliable method for finding someone on here.

Your account address is on your profile page, and you can paste other people's addresses into the search box to make their accounts appear. You can then just click follow on their profile page.

Hello #Fediverse! We are https://linuxgaming.fans, a #Mastodon instance based around #Linux and #Gaming on the OS. No matter if you are running a desktop #debian build or an #arch based #steamdeck, we're here to discuss games, configurations, how-tos, and finding new friends to share our passion with!

Our registrations are limited at the moment as we are still in the process of configuring the server. You're welcome to submit for an account though!

Hope to see you soon!

OK in terms of scaling #Mastodon server infrastructure, this looks interesting:

"CIRA is proud to announce its official partnership with Mastodon Canada, mstdn.ca, to support its growth and community-building efforts. As thousands of Canadians flock to the platform, this unique partnership reflects CIRA’s mission to support Canadian internet communities built on the open web and powered by a .CA domain."

I got in a back door at @mastodon.social . I didn't know, admin had closed it to new people. Until I find an instance for ME & learn HOW to move, I'm not recruiting. I don't know which #Mastodon Instance to suggest.

I see so many critics of decentralized social networks, and the #fediverse in particular, because of distrust of individual instance administrators as curators of social history.

But as we've now seen quite dramatically, a person with a big enough wallet and vendetta can just as easily destroy social history backed by a giant corporation. I'd rather put more trust into decentralized instance admins, particularly smaller ones. #Mastodon

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.

- A #Mastodon instance *could* decide not to accept Toots that include #GoogleAnalytics URLs. Have any done so?

Back out there in the real world, there is skepticism that people are really spending more time on #Mastodon and driving traffic etc.

This is impeding some take up.

And one BIG reason is that Mastodon hides HTTP referrer information for privacy reasons, so you cannot see Mastodon traffic in your web stats.

I agree with this decision – but I want to warm about this consequence, as I suspect organisations are underestimating the shift that has taken place. #webstats #analytics

We created the account at Mastodon only a week ago and this community here grown to over 32,000.

Thank you for welcoming us here, thank you for all boosts, comments, advice, support and your engagement.

We are still learning and try to find our specific language on this platform. Your feedback is much appreciated.

Maybe we could boost this feature request? #mastodon #cw https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/19256

I and some others recently saw an interesting (clever but in a gross way) spam development, exploiting the privacy of favoriting.

It was an account set up as a bot using the Mastodon logo and name to appear official. Its profile was devoted entirely to text claiming your PC was infected and your account would be removed for slowing down Mastodon if you didn’t click a suspicious link to fix it. The account had no posts, follows, or followers.

It seemed to operate by favoriting potential victims’ posts without boosting, leaving no visible tracks of where it had been or what it was doing, while bringing eyes to its profile. I know I clicked over to its profile to see what the heck was up. I wasn’t the only one.

The scammers have arrived.

The question is, what is the context? Ie, explaining to people on Twitter, I say "find me on #Mastodon". Yes I know they can follow me with #Friendica or #Pleroma but "find me on the #Fediverse" doesn't name a concrete thing and that's going to be confusing. If I'm on Pleroma or Friendica I will probably already understand I can interact with Mastodon.

That said, I do want to make sure people know the Fediverse is much more than Mastodon. The question is: when and how to introduce that?

To make things clearer with #Fedilab, there are two ways to manage tags.

- You can pin the timeline. This is an in-app feature. This feature allows to customize timelines. You have to click on the "+" button.

- You can follow tags. This is a #Mastodon 4 feature. You will get messages containing the tag in your home timeline even if you don't follow the account.
Screenshot showing the top bar when visiting a tag.
There are two buttons.
The "+" button allows to pin the tag on Fedilab.
The other allows to follow the tag. It's a Mastodon feature.

IMAGINE THERE'S NO TWITTER... 🤔

It's easy if you try
No hellish trolling
Or that unfunny Tesla guy
Imagine all the people
Not blocking folk all day

Ah-aaah-aah-aah-aah

Imagine there's no blue tick
It isn't hard to do
No crypto diehards
No @realdonaldtrump, too
Imagine all the people
Boosting toots in peace

But if Twitter's ever gone
I hope some day you'll join us

All right! I'm creating some community moderation feature requests on #Mastodon, and I'm going to drop links in this thread each time they're created.

The feature requests are:

1. Turn off comments
2. Lock comments
3. Approve comments
4. Flair profiles
5. Adjust crowd control

Will add updates!

MIT study on deceentralized moderation as a model for countering disinformation:

"This work shows that a decentralized approach to moderation can lead to higher content reliability on social media, says Jahanbakhsh. This approach is also more efficient and scalable than centralized moderation schemes, and may appeal to users who mistrust platforms, she adds."

!Friendica Support For moving from #Mastodon to #Friendica : In Mastodon it's possible to export not just followers but also blocked users. Is there any way to import that to Friendica in an automated procedere?

It's delightful to work towards a #mastodon #coop for #Canada with @evan and other lovely folks. Thoughts so far:

The #Twitter #migration creates a sense of urgency. But that rush is at odds with creating safety, a broad leadership team, real accountability structures...all the things that might actually make for a healthy community.

We've seen plenty of fast-start sites. It's hard but powerful to slow down & create conditions for lasting success & inclusion.

I've recently discovered Mastodos, a fork of the official Android #Mastodon, which adds features like the federated timeline, unlisted tooting, bookmarks, and more!
