Lux Tenebris

Jon Foreman: Created at Pensarn, Abergele. This was the last piece I made in 2021! I was glad to have gotten the chance to work on a large scale again, it had been a while! As ever I had an idea that changed as I progressed but I love that this one has curves going horizontally and vertically with a kind of half pipe effect (a curved ramp of stones either side). Also very lucky to have had the chance to capture the sea engulfing it. Although it was coming in very fast it was coming very calmly which allowed me to get plenty of photos, got my feet wet for this shot!

I initially started with the largest stones making the back of the circle, as the stones got smaller I began to realise the time that would be involved. I’d love to know how many there actually are! Fluidus

Jon Foreman: Yes it looks like a jellyfish, no its not meant to be one. I’m not trying to suppress any imagination but for me I’m essentially trying to create something that doesn’t yet exist so that attachment to something that does exist gets on my nerves haha also feels like its oversimplifying the work a bit… But call it what you want haha!

This one was actually created before “Peruersum” (The 4 day piece created at LEAF) and is what Peruersum was based on. The difference being that I didn’t have the time fill a full circle for this one so I got the opportunity at LEAF. I love creating the familiarity between pieces of work without directly repeating something. Having said that, i don’t know that I could directly repeat a piece of work without it becoming a tiny bit different!

Also the sand was really annoying that day and every time I put a stone into the sand it created the cracks you can see between the stones, interesting effect i suppose

Very satisfying work to do, showing freshwater Wests colours in a different way, although I usually add white too I thought amongst these white may stand out too much.

Expletio Duo

Jon Foreman: Created at Freshwater West. This piece is 1 in a 3 part set that I’m trying to get made. Many of you will have seen “Expletio” which is a single spiral using these same colours and this fractal style of working. I shall at some stage be creating the third in the set which will be a triple spiral in the same style! Anyway this one proved more fiddly than the previous version, I think I must have downscaled it a bit and that coupled with cold/windy weather made for difficult work. Got there in the end though!

Sinking Circle

Jon Foreman: Although I don’t consider myself an especially good photographer I’m very happy with how this one turned out, aside from the work itself looking good (and with this angle showing the incline more clearly) aside from the work I think I caught the atmosphere of the day which isn’t often very obvious in my work! Also love the water making the edge of the stones glow and they disappear into the distance, I’m all about depth within the sculpture why not outside the sculpture too.

Jon Foreman: Created at Freshwater West. Couldn’t resist sharing this angle with the shadows! This one got a little bit messy in the middle because of the nature of the placement in the space available. I have to start in the middle and slot the next layer behind the previous so the more I add the less space there is in the small “hole” I made for this. So yeah they got a little bit squashed but I can live with that!

Jon Foreman: Created at Freshwater West. Another mushroom creation, couldn’t resist making use of the massive branch of driftwood. Again these are just stones balanced on sticks accept where they go over the driftwood. A fun one for sure… More mushrooms to come!

Jon Foreman: Created at Freshwater West I’ve done quite a lot now with shrooms, yes they’re stones balanced on sticks, no – its not as difficult as it seems! .. until you start putting them very close together… But until creating this piece I’ve yet to work with them while incorporating colour (or more precisely colour change) as with this one! I’ll likely do more at some stage!

Located in the charming Śródka district of Poznań, Poland, an eye-catching mural by artist Radosław Barek has become a beloved attraction.

Found east of Ostrów Tumski on ul. Śródka 3, the mural transports viewers to Śródka in the 1920s, featuring a vibrant cast of characters that include a rotund butcher, a trumpeter, a cat, and Władysław Odonic, the Duke of all Greater Poland during that era.

What makes this mural particularly impressive is its clever use of three-dimensional illusions, making the artwork appear to rise up as a colorful mirage amidst the quaint village atmosphere of Śródka when approached from the east (tram stop Rondo Śródka).

The idea for the mural was conceived by Gerard Cofta, a long-time Śródka resident.

Artist Radosław Barek then utilized preserved photographs of the old Śródka as inspiration for the concept of painting several houses on the wall using spatial illusions. The mural, titled “The Story of Śródka with a Trumpeter on the Roof and a Cat in the Background,” brings to life the red roofs, colorful facades, and lively atmosphere of the past.

Śródka has always been a unique and historically rich district, with its origins dating back to the 13th century. After a period of decline in the 1960s due to urban development, the area underwent a major revitalization in 2007, transforming it into a hip and bustling neighborhood that attracts crowds every weekend.

The mural, which was painted by a team of four to eight people over a month, has drawn attention not only from Poland but also from around the world. Its images have been featured on prominent websites dedicated to architecture and beyond. This stunning piece of street art has breathed new life into the Śródka district and may inspire similar projects for other buildings in the area.

Trees already have character. These artists add just enough to let trunks, branches, leaves, and roots become part of the artwork.

From giant forest hands to murals that use real leaves as hair, these twelve works show artists working with nature, not around it. Sometimes the gallery is a sidewalk, a stump, or a patch of forest floor.

Natalia Rak’s mural gets shared a lot for a reason. Painted for the Folk on the Street festival in 2013, it shows a giant girl in traditional Polish dress tipping a metal watering can toward the real tree growing below. The tree is not extra. 💡 Nerd Fact: This mural is often reposted without an exact location, but early street-art coverage placed it at Aleja Józefa Piłsudskiego 11/4. That detail matters. The living tree is part of the address; move the mural away from it and the scene no longer works.

🤗 Hugging the Tree

A real tree grows over a low concrete wall, and the painted child below holds a red pot around the trunk. The artist and location have not been confirmed, but the idea is easy to read: the wall becomes a flowerpot, and the tree becomes the plant. The hug is not subtle. It works anyway.

💡 Nerd Fact: The joke has a practical side, too. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says urban street trees help cool heat-island streets, slow stormwater runoff, and capture rainfall through leaves, stems, and roots. The painted hug has a point beyond being cute.

😴 The Trees Also Sleep by Dinho Bento in Debrecen, Hungary 🇭🇺

Dinho Bento’s The Trees Also Sleep series places quiet faces into the worn openings of old trees in Nagyerdő. Local reporting noted that Bento made the works on wooden panels fitted into the hollows rather than painting directly on the trees. 💡 Nerd Fact: In a 2021 interview, Bento said tree knots had already inspired a canvas series. For the forest pieces, he traced each knot, painted on a thin wooden board, and used removable paste so the tree itself would not be damaged. The point was to add a face without hurting the tree.

🐗 The Old Sow Between the Trees by Hannelie Coetzee in Knislinge, Sweden 🇸🇪

At Wanås Konst sculpture park, Hannelie Coetzee used stacked wood to create a huge wild boar portrait. Wanås identifies the 2015 work as Gamla suggan mellan träden (Ou sog tussen bome), and it was part of the Barriers — Contemporary South Africa exhibition. 💡 Nerd Fact: Wanås Konst says Coetzee chose the wild boar partly because the animal had disappeared from Swedish fauna for several centuries, then returned and sparked debate about fear, adaptability, and coexistence. 🍂 Four Seasons — Tribute to Kora by Bruno Althamer in Warsaw, Poland 🇵🇱

This 2019 mural of Polish singer Kora uses a chestnut tree as her changing hair. Wysokie Obcasy, which launched it as part of the Kobiety na mury project, described the work at Nowy Świat 18/20 as a portrait combined with the chestnut growing next to the wall, so it changes with the seasons. 🍁 Vortex at Little Milford Woods by Jon Foreman in Wales, UK 🇬🇧

Jon Foreman shared this temporary work as Vortex, created at Little Milford Woods in 2024. Fallen autumn leaves form a spiral that climbs the trunk and then unwinds across the forest floor. The National Trust says the woodland may date back to at least the 11th century, later lost large areas of oak to commercial forestry, and has been replanted with broadleaved trees. ✋ The Giant Hand of Vyrnwy by Simon O’Rourke in Wales, UK 🇬🇧

When Wales’ tallest tree was badly damaged by a storm, Simon O’Rourke carved the remaining 50-foot stump into The Giant Hand of Vyrnwy. On his site, O’Rourke explains that the hand was inspired by the Giants of Vyrnwy and by the tree’s final attempt to reach for the sky, giving the stump a second life. 💡 Nerd Fact: O’Rourke notes that the project needed two days just to erect scaffolding, followed by six days of chainsaw and grinder work. The finished carving was coated with plant-based tung oil, chosen because it was safe near waterways. The behind-the-scenes engineering is part of the story.

Painted for Gdynia Demptowo district between Chabrowa st. and Kartuska st. The theme is to inspire people for outdoor activities, sports and fun.

BIO: LOONEY is a contemporary graffiti artist active in the art scene since 1995. Co-founder of the first tri-city graffiti artist collaborative (DSC). In 2008 he graduated from the Graphic Design and Painting Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. His work predominantly consists of murals and canvas paintings. Native to street art, his technique is a combination of spray paint, stencils and brush paint. His work has been showcased in individual and collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad. A selection of his work has been published in many art magazines, among others : “Dos Dedos”, “Concrete Magazine”, “Ślizg”, “Brain Damage”. An active participant in many local events, graffiti and street art festivals.

In Warsaw, there’s a mural that pays tribute to Kora, a legendary Polish musician and cultural icon.

Created by artist Bruno Althamer, the mural spans the side of a large building, depicting the four seasons with dynamic colors and thoughtful details. One standout feature is how Kora’s hair changes with each season, blending beautifully into the surrounding artwork.

Honoring Kora’s Legacy

Kora was admired for her trailblazing music and unmistakable voice. She passed away in 2018, but her influence remains strong. This mural is both a tribute and a reminder of her lasting contributions, inviting viewers to celebrate her enduring impact on Polish culture.

The Four Seasons Concept

Bruno Althamer’s design uses the seasons to represent life’s cycles—growth, change, and renewal. Spring features soft pastels and blossoming flowers, summer is alive with lush greens and bright yellows, autumn glows with golden leaves, and winter is serene in shades of blue and white. Kora’s portrait weaves these elements together, anchoring the mural as a meaningful part of Warsaw’s artistic landscape.

About Fin DAC: Hailing from Cork (Eire), Fin DAC has lived the majority of his life in London (England). He is self-taught with influences ranging from dark graphic novels to Francis Bacon.

In a relatively short urban art career he has ploughed a singular path in defining an atypical paint/stencil style that ignores the accepted visual language of street art almost completely. He prefers the term ‘urban aesthetic’ to ‘street artist’.

The Legend of Giants: An Immortal Artwork by Natalia Rak

In the heart of Białystok, Poland, a legendary tale has been elegantly translated into a vivid mural by the talented artist Natalia Rak. Painted back in 2013 for the Folk on the Street festival, the mural has become a lasting symbol of this vibrant city.

Natalia Rak: “When I started drawing a sketch I had to consider few elements of the area, for example there are windows and growing tree which we can’t cut. The organizers gave me texts about polish legends from that region. I especially liked legends about giants. First they destroy world around them but later they start to copy human behavior and started taking care of the nature. I hit on an idea how including the tree. I think this mural is good start to take up green areas development. Cities should have as many trees as possible. When I started I had CMYK in acrylics and more that 100 cans. I always use acrylic paints on background and then I make detail using spray cans. The sketch took me 4 hours. I worked ten hours per day. After seven days this mural was finished. I had rain each day of work but I was very optimistic and full of hope.”

“Swallows” in Casablanca, Morocco for Casamouja.

Fabián Bravo Guerrero about the mural: Swallows represent respect, love and fidelity, they are migratory birds, which usually migrate to Africa, that’s why I chose to paint them here in Casablanca, the almond flowers, makes the swallows stand out more.

I decided to paint the background with Arab tiles, and turquoise, white and reddish color’s, in tribute to the “Hassan II Mosque” (the second largest in the world) that was near the mural.

“Fragile Balance” in Estepona, Spain.

Fabián Bravo Guerrero about the mural: According to data from the Specialized System for Reporting Cases of School Violence (Siseve) from the Ministry of Education, a total of 20,604 bullying reports were recorded nationwide between 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 alone.
This is what the mural is about.

In it, we see a teenage girl climbing a staircase toward the moon, which shines brightly and illuminates the entire scene.
The moon represents everything the girl has dreamed of.
She wants to reach it—like we all do—but she’s carrying a heavy backpack: filled with insults, rejection, fear, loneliness…

And how will her story end?

On one hand, the girl might reach her goals thanks to the help she receives after her bullying case becomes known.
On the other hand, she might not make it. The weight of her backpack is so heavy that it throws off her balance, and she can’t reach her destination.

With this, I aim to reflect the internal struggle faced by those experiencing bullying, highlighting the importance of offering support—before the weight becomes too much to bear.
