An early morning visitor. Think it flew in while I had the windows open last night. Description in alt-text.

A moth sits still on the left corner of a wide monitor. It is light brown in color with patterns of a dead leaf. You also see three small prominent black spots on each of its wings. On the monitor, you see the fediverse site open.

Young marmot, last year somewhere in Switzerland. We spent the night nearby, and were planning to shoot the Milky Way in the night. Unfortunately, the night turned out cloudy, so no luck there! But the luck returned in the morning, with a family of young marmots frolicking around.

Red Squirrel.

It was a change for me to watch a few of these in a deciduous woodland. They're so often photographed in pine or fir tree forests.

Made for rather autumnal colours behind the squirrel, as it sat on a stump, eating a nut.

Canon R7, RF100-500mm, f/7.1, 1/400th, ISO 3200 at 324mm.

A new year-long project of photographing a large country park has begun. It's a daunting task as the area is rich in wildlife and flora, and includes several large reservoirs, so in sweltering heat I started small in one of the many meadows. Please click for full views.

When on my walk at Lake Washington I’m always on the lookout for my little American Mink friend, so cute and curious, likes to play peekaboo. Tap for full view😀)

Portrait of a wild American mink, head shot, while he’s looking directly into my camera, playing peekaboo with me at the shore of Lake Washington. The low angle morning sun illuminates his right side, makes his brown fur, right eye nice and shiny.

Kudos to the Parks Canada staff for doing such a great job of training the wildlife in Elk Island National Park! 🤣 #wildlife #canada

Help my mum get something out of the #fediverse

My mum uses Facebook currently because there's a few groups on it that she likes.

I'm no longer on it, and she's joined the #fediverse (on my instance) but I'm struggling to find replacement groups.

So, does anyone know any good #fedi #groups/instances focused on #gardening, #mushroom / #fungi identification, #wildlife in general, wildlife in the UK, etc.?

Please don't @ her (she doesn't yet fully understand how this stuff works, and isn't looking for people to contact her out of the blue). Hence why I'm looking for groups or instances that I can point her at the local timelines of. Then she can control her own interactions with them.

She's fluent in #German and #English.

But please do @ me with any info.

Boosts appreciated.

Polar bears on an abandoned island

Russian underwater and wildlife photographer Dmitry Kokh took a trip of a lifetime to an abandoned meteorological station on Kolyuchin Island. This small island, located in the Chukchi Sea, is in a remote area of the Russian arctic. While humans have long since left the area, Kokh discovered that there are other creatures making themselves comfortable. Polar bears have overtaken the station, turning the old buildings into cozy homes and, from the looks of it, thriving.
