7. Worn Bronze — Victor Noir’s Grave, Paris, France
Victor Noir’s grave in Père-Lachaise cemetery, created by Patrick Magaud in 1984, has gained fame not for Noir’s journalistic work but for the legend surrounding his death and burial site. Noir was a journalist shot dead, and his grave features a full-sized bronze statue of him lying down, as if recently shot. Over time, the statue became a fertility symbol. Legend has it that kissing the statue on the lips, leaving a flower in Victor’s hat, and rubbing the genital area enhances fertility, improves one’s sex life, or helps find a husband within a year. This has led to the lips and trousers’ bulge on the statue becoming noticeably shiny from repeated contact.

9. Radium – SHOK-1 in Le Locle, Switzerland
Painted with SHOK-1’s signature X-ray style, this glowing green mural shows a skeletal hand delicately drawing time with a pencil, its tip forming a clock shape. Located in the birthplace of Swiss watchmaking.
SHOK-1: This piece is about the tragic story of the Radium Girls, who suffered horribly with radiation poisoning from painting watch faces back in the 20s. I think we can still learn from it today as a narrative about the misuse of science by commerce, and of profit over people. I rendered it in the colour of radium watch lume, as if it were the dial glowing in the dark.

Muzej Staroga Grada / Stari Grad Museum: The mosaics are decorated with multicolor geometric and floral motifs and are of superior workmanship. By analogy with similar mosaics and known workshop styles, thy can be dated to the 2nd century AD. We will have a better insight into the purpose of this luxurious building of the Roman Faria after the analysis and interpretation of archaeological finds and after merging all the plans of rooms with mosaic floors under surrounding houses, which were excavated in previous decades.

Gary Drostle: On leaving Art College in 1984 I was determined to create work outside of the gallery system. I wanted to make work out in public spaces. Works which harmonized with, and were part of, our built environment.
This vision was inspired by my long fascination with classical and ancient art and my own belief in art as an expression of all of our existence, open and accessible to all.
Over the course of more than thirty years dedicated to creating site specific artworks that original passion has only increased as I have become more aware of our relationship with our environment and my skills to create such work have broadened and developed.
Gary Drostle: The whole world of graffiti and street art I find extremely vibrant and inspiring and I am very honored to have had the opportunity to create with or alongside some great street artists including an amazing project with InkCrew in Bogota and international mosaic artists in Santiago, Chile. I have also taken part in the UpFest, Bristol and the Street Art Biennale in Cali, Colombia.
Gary Drostle: Koi lily pond mosaic – There’s something about making the surface of water in mosaic that completely captivates me but at the same time is endlessly frustrating as inevitably I fail to capture it. Each one pushes me on to the next.
Ancient Inspiration
Gary Drostle: My first and greatest inspiration has always been ancient art. From cave paintings to Greek Black Figure vases and on to the fabulous mosaic floors of the Roman world.
I studied Classics at school and find the British Museum in London is the place I return to again and again. My ‘logo’ of course was inspired by the many ghostly hands found on ancient cave sites around the world, perhaps the original signature.
Not a hand print but the impression left by a hand removed these ancient signatures for me symbolize the effect we leave behind on our environment and also represent a very open and democratic view of artistic participation.
There are two attributes of much of these works that particularly inspire me. One is the integration of these works with the human environment, they are knitted into the everyday life and culture in a way that our society seems to have almost forgotten. The second attribute is the balance of meaning, pattern and abstraction that is something I continuously aspire to.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: This painting, 100 ft in the air, is so special to me. I lived in the building it is painted on when I was 17 years old. This series is so special to me. I’ve long wanted to create it, and join the long list of Black artists and writers who have used the mythology of Black folk flying in their work. I’ve interviewed so far several Black people about the idea of our ability to fly. Photographed them. Discussed freedom and healing with them.
Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: “I let go of what has weighed me down. Light as a feather, I ride the wind. Like Black folks have always done. Flying free above the structures built to confine us.” It took me a while to get to this final writing of prose for the mural. I wanted to convey both my own personal weightlessness as a means to fly, inspired by Toni Morrison’s writing. As well as a reference to the collective ability found in historical stories. My work is generally about how we experience particular environments on the ground through the lens of race and gender. This project is breaking that open, offering public images of us traversing a new space – the air – above societal structures and boundaries.

The swing is the best metaphor of life: the breeze of the present gives the push towards the future, while a shiver rises and dusts off the past.

“Floating World” by Ray Bartkus in Marijampolė, Lithuania.
This remarkable mural by Ray Bartkus was intentionally painted upside-down to create a magical effect. The swimmers, rowers, and swans appear right-side-up only when reflected in the waters of the Šešupė River, which flows through the heart of the city.
Visitors to the old dam are invited to rediscover the mural’s beauty time and time again. As Bartkus explains:
“The drawing itself is created in reverse, and its true form is revealed only in the water’s reflection. I hope that every time people pass by, they will discover something new, because this artwork, like our days in life, is never the same as it was yesterday.”

Located in the charming Śródka district of Poznań, Poland, an eye-catching mural by artist Radosław Barek has become a beloved attraction.
Found east of Ostrów Tumski on ul. Śródka 3, the mural transports viewers to Śródka in the 1920s, featuring a vibrant cast of characters that include a rotund butcher, a trumpeter, a cat, and Władysław Odonic, the Duke of all Greater Poland during that era.
What makes this mural particularly impressive is its clever use of three-dimensional illusions, making the artwork appear to rise up as a colorful mirage amidst the quaint village atmosphere of Śródka when approached from the east (tram stop Rondo Śródka).

The idea for the mural was conceived by Gerard Cofta, a long-time Śródka resident.
Artist Radosław Barek then utilized preserved photographs of the old Śródka as inspiration for the concept of painting several houses on the wall using spatial illusions. The mural, titled “The Story of Śródka with a Trumpeter on the Roof and a Cat in the Background,” brings to life the red roofs, colorful facades, and lively atmosphere of the past.
Śródka has always been a unique and historically rich district, with its origins dating back to the 13th century. After a period of decline in the 1960s due to urban development, the area underwent a major revitalization in 2007, transforming it into a hip and bustling neighborhood that attracts crowds every weekend.
The mural, which was painted by a team of four to eight people over a month, has drawn attention not only from Poland but also from around the world. Its images have been featured on prominent websites dedicated to architecture and beyond. This stunning piece of street art has breathed new life into the Śródka district and may inspire similar projects for other buildings in the area.

La Croix-Rousse once served as the bustling center of Lyon’s silk industry during the 19th century, earning it the nickname “the hill that works.” The mural, known as “Le Mur des Canuts,” pays homage to the silk weavers who resided and toiled in this vibrant community.
The mural captures the essence of the neighborhood’s past, featuring colorful buildings, pastel-hued high windows, a stone stairway, a charming Guignol theater, and, of course, a silk shop. Every detail is meticulously crafted to create a three-dimensional effect, seamlessly blending art with the architectural heritage of Lyon.

I have high hopes that it will encourage specially the young audience to come up with their very own story, in which the lead is a confident, black child in a golden wheelchair and in a self-made mermaid costume.

Muraleslian: For centuries, the women of Ondarroa managed the most important activities of village life. This mural is a tribute to many of those women.
The weaver, methodical and austere is an archetype that refuses to submit, she is living memory. When she weaves, she weaves something more than what we see with the naked eye.
The net’s creation is individual and collective identity… and we already know that collective identity is impossible without memory, it must be maintained by memory. To remember is to make visible, to claim, to repair. And as a weaver in Ondarroa said not long ago: “you have to fix things, you have to dignify them”.
The nets she and many others weave are networks that hold and maintain the community together. In between the threads arise woven tales through which lived stories are narrated.
Sometimes the practice of a trade leads to introspection, silence and remembrance, and other times it leads to words, solidarity and the search for solutions to common problems. When the activity is publicly exposed (when it is practised outdoors), the ability to transmit, the desire to share experience and the importance of the processes are made public.
This mural is also, in part, a legacy in the practice of sharing. Its anchored in this town, in this neighbourhood – as a contribution to the exercise of memory: meticulous hands of women, hands of woman past and present, THE HANDS OF MANY IN THIS TOWN, creating reality and at the same time eroding old archetypes based on oblivion and invisibilization.
It is an invitation to continue threading the true legacy of all those who have not ceased to weave/create/concoct, that is: let us continue to weave together!…

KTHR: Here’s one of my paintings of Festival EFÍMURS which I paid tribute to the sacred patron of the fishermen. It’s been an honor for me to represent this character in one of the main buildings in town. Here in L’Ametlla de Mar, Saint Peter is celebrated every year and even though the new generations aren’t very religious the tradition and the believing of this entity is still important for all the fishermen. Represented with his characteristic white beard, his two keys and the pope’s ring also known as the fishermen ring. Wearing the actual yellow suit for fishermen and with the small detail of the fishing moment painted bellow this is how I pictured Saint Peter and hope everyone likes it as much as I enjoyed painting it for my hometown.

Marcoguoli: This property called “The guitar of trees” is located in the extreme south of the province of Córdoba, 20 km north of General Levalle. The idea of creating this drawing visible from the air was conceived by Graciela Yraizoz. But due to her premature death, it was her husband Pedro Ureta who carried out the work in the late ’70s. The park is 25 hectares, 2,500 meters long and 400 meters wide. It is made up of pine, California cypress, pineapple cypress and medicinal eucalyptus.
It took Pedro Ureta and his employees 5 years of work to complete this masterpiece, starting from little plants between 15 and 25 cm 🌿. Pedro passed away on September 19, 2019, when he was 79 years old. The ranch is still under the care of his children Ignacio, María Julia, Soledad and Ezequiel.
The characteristic form of the stay can be appreciated only from the air, but by contacting the official blog estancialaguitarra.blogspot.com you may be able to book a visit within the premises.

SMUG: My wall for this years Artscape project in Partille, Göteborg. This year we were given a folk tale to base our murals on and I was given the tale of Revontulet. In the Finnish origin story of the Aurora Borealis a firefox wins favor of the villagers by igniting the sky with the Northern Lights to help a lost hiker find his way in the icy woods. This is now the tallest mural in Sweden and whispers are saying the tallest in Scandinavia.23
