We may be loving and merciful out of the kindness of our spirits. But it is practical, too. Kind deeds may return to us. They can fill the whole world, even in bitter times.

I think if I lived 678 years I would never get bored and I would have new projects to do all the time. I feel like I want to do a lot. And I do a lot every day, but the days are too short for my motivation and drive. The weeks, the months, are flying by so fast. The years, still more ahead than behind, but soon they will balance, and then you'll ride the ones ahead. But it's all about making the best of this ride, even tho too short.

This year we have a motorhome, very little money, and a lot of plans.

Make sure you follow us on Peertube https://videos.trom.tf/c/tromhome/videos - we will go chase the darkest skies in Spain, meet with some wonderful friends from the project, volunteer, and do a lot.

A little break from my recent Scotland photography run.

With the recent trend of murky, overcast and windless conditions here, we enjoyed a stroll around the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail in Clapham, to capture the last of this year's autumn colours. 👍

#landscape #landscapephotography #nature #travel #yorkshiredales #northyorkshire #yorkshire #uk #britain #england #autumn #fall

A peaceful autumn woodland path through the Ingleborough Estate shows walkers strolling beneath a natural canopy of beech trees, their leaves displaying brilliant shades of amber and gold. The well-maintained gravel path, carpeted with fallen leaves, stretches into the misty distance whilst tall, grey-barked trees stand sentinel on either side, creating a tranquil tunnel effect that frames both the lone walker in the foreground and the small group of ramblers ahead. A moss-covered stone bridge with curved walls leads to traditional Yorkshire stone cottages in the village of Clapham, whilst two walkers pause on the path ahead. The narrow footbridge, dusted with autumn leaves, curves gently upward between weathered walls topped with verdant moss, creating a charming scene typical of Yorkshire Dales architecture, with the grey-stone houses and their distinctive sash windows providing a quintessentially British backdrop.
A stone footpath strewn with autumn leaves winds its way through verdant woodland towards a dramatic waterfall, which cascades through an ancient stone arch bridge in the Yorkshire Dales. The stepped path, bordered by a wooden handrail and lush vegetation, leads viewers' eyes naturally to the tumbling white waters of Clapham Beck as it flows through multiple tiers beneath the weathered stonework, whilst the surrounding trees display the golden hues of autumn. A dreamy woodland scene captures the essence of autumn in the Yorkshire Dales, where Japanese maples display vibrant coral-red leaves amongst the yellowing foliage of native trees. The misty atmosphere softens the forest's depths, whilst the rough-barked trunk of a silver birch stands prominently in the foreground, creating a striking contrast with the ethereal blend of emerald, amber and crimson leaves that dance throughout the composition.

I feel like we could all use some good news right now, so here you go: Bright comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will become visible in the evening sky starting tomorrow night.

Clear view to the west essential. Sharp eyes highly recommended. Pointers at the link.

https://skyandtelescope.org/press-releases/bright-comet-evening-view/ #space #science #astronomy #nature #photography

The bright Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will first become visible in the evening sky on October 11th, appearing between Antares, the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, and Arcturus, the brightest star in Boötes. While opening night will have it competing against twilight, it will be both higher in the sky and more visible against darker skies on subsequent evenings.

The Grab - https://www.videoneat.com/documentaries/26145/the-grab/

Watch this documentary to see how governments and companies go after buying Earth resources from other tribes, in all sorts of terrible ways. From arable land to water. In a crazy race to get enough for their own tribe because of the impacts of climate change that will devastate vast areas on this planet.

This terrible mentality of trying to survive and thrive at the expense of the rest, as if we are not living on the same planet. Same spaceship.

Very telling documentary. Some 10 years in the making.

A moth sits still on the left corner of a wide monitor. It is light brown in color with patterns of a dead leaf. You also see three small prominent black spots on each of its wings. On the monitor, you see the fediverse site open.

What is "normal" anyway?

Astronomers have found multi-planet systems around a number of nearby stars, but none that's much like our own. They're not a lot like each other, either.

We still don't know what a normal planetary system looks like, or if there even is such a thing.

https://astrobiology.com/2024/01/unraveling-the-mysteries-of-planet-formation-and-evolution-in-a-distant-solar-system.html #science #nature #astronomy

We highlight the disparate architectures of the highest-known multiplicity planetary systems, as well as a few systems similar to TOI-1136. We highlight that the candidate seventh planet in TOI-1136 does not have a confidently detected orbital distance. Planet and stellar radii are scaled for comparison to other systems, though we emphasize that the planet-star size is not to scale. None of the systems exhibits a clear analog to any of the others, and all have the potential for very interesting, future study. — UC Irvine

Young marmot, last year somewhere in Switzerland. We spent the night nearby, and were planning to shoot the Milky Way in the night. Unfortunately, the night turned out cloudy, so no luck there! But the luck returned in the morning, with a family of young marmots frolicking around.

Gardens at Calke Abbey were laid out by Sir Harry Harpur and his son between 1770 & 1820.
The formal garden has good bedding, herbaceous borders and Kitchen Garden provides a wide range of fruit and vegetables.
In the walled garden there is the only surviving Auricula theatre, which was built to display these beautiful plants.

THE ILLUSION OF MORAL DECLINE by Adam M. Mastroianni and Daniel T. Gilbert (Nature, 2023).

"In a series of studies using both archival and original data (n = 12,492,983), we show that people in at least 60 nations around the world believe that morality is declining, that they have believed this for at least 70 years and that they attribute this decline both to the decreasing morality of individuals as they age and to the decreasing morality of successive generations. Next, we show that people’s reports of the morality of their contemporaries have not declined over time, suggesting that the perception of moral decline is an illusion. Finally, we show how a simple mechanism based on two well-established psychological phenomena (biased exposure to information and biased memory for information) can produce an illusion of moral decline."

#ClimateChange mitigation.

Wrong idea - The tech heads talk of constructing Carbon Capture machines. That would require hundreds of thousands of machines, more mining, more power consumption #fail

Right approach #nature

But, the photo of another deforested landscape. This is not wetland, Tree's used to & would grow here. Sheep keep it looking like this.

Photo taken in #Sheep District National Park, #England (officially called the Lake District National park)

#ClimateAction #ClimatePolicy
The photo shows a stream running through a deforested landscape. The only place where the odd tree grows is where humans or sheep couldn't get to them (e.g., on the vertical rocky crags).

As Tree's grow they capture carbon. To mitigate climate change we need to use solutions, big & small, that don't emit & or sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide
