Demo Hype „Star Trucker“ [EN]

I play the demo of the space truck simulation „Star Trucker“ by Monster and Monster. The final game is about to be released somewhen in the year 2024 by Raw Fury.
The demo available for Windows only. I use Proton 8.0-5 to play it on Linux, no further tricks needed.
Whether the final release will have native versions for Linux or MacOS, I can't say at the moment.

This whole forced microsoft copilot thing is making me so mad. Been thinking for a while of having a second hard drive with a linux distro for my personal work that i can boot to, and keeping windows for external work stuff.

Not sure how to go about doing this, though, does anyone have any advice on this?

Also for distros i was thinking popOS since I recall @davidrevoy using it for his work. I have been using Kubuntu on a laptop and it works great, but I am open to suggestions. I mostly use Krita, Scribus and OpenOffice.

But to be fair ...

Is it the implementation language being the main issue? Or is it the flexibility of extending it with plugins and that it is effectively a setuid tool, granting root access immediately when an unprivileged user starts the program (the privileges are reduced first when it has parsed the sudo config).

Sudo is a nice tool from the user's side. But security wise it's a disastrous approach. Privileges should first be elevated *after* the config has been parsed and the expected privilege level has been established. Then the tool should ideally jump to that privilege level directly.

This post introduces some new ideas ... https://tim.siosm.fr/blog/2023/12/19/ssh-over-unix-socket/

It's not a perfect approach in all cases. But it gets rid of the setuid issue.

As of today, you can access your encrypted #ProtonMail inbox and #ProtonCalendar on #Windows and #macOS without a browser or a third-party email app.

🐧 The #Linux app is also in the works.

Thanks to your initial feedback, these include improvements like:
🗓️ Easier access to Proton Calendar
⏩ Easy migration from #Gmail
🚨 Notification badges
🔠 Improved accessibility and font support

and more!

All paid Proton subscribers can try out the beta today https://proton.me/support/mail-desktop-app

There's a Proton Mail logo on the top of the image. Underneath is the following text:
"Now in beta for paid Proton Mail plans". The text is followed by the logos of Microsoft Windows and Apple.
The screenshot of the Proton Mail macOS app. The mouse cursor is hovering over the calendar icon, and the tooltip saying "Open Calendar" appears above it.

I'd love to write #CLI programs in a statically typed #programming language for a living. Is there a home office #job opening like that in #Austria? #Rust #Linux

It's Make-a Gift Day

For Make a Gift Day, I'm going to make my first Live USB and try out my first #Linux, thanks to @grin ✅ who is teaching me about #libre-software. I looked at a bunch of ones that are supposed to be good for beginners and haven't picked one yet, but maybe today. One that looks pretty good to me is #Linux-Lite because they named the apps for what they do. Firefox is "web browser," the file manager is called "file manager" instead of whatever Linuxy name it has in other Linuxes. That might make things easier for a beginner.

hi everyone i'm creating an open source fast and simple digital painting software
right now i have:
- brush engine similar to popular manga software
- antialiased bucket fill with gap closing
- opengl canvas view
- first bits of intuitive ui/ux

i'm preparing a demo for linux folks, next i will do layer system also similar to popular manga software

@Adam Hunt try that on a small pod, you're on diasp.org, which probably have pulling content from everywhere.

My pod possibly will not pull all content from diasp.org tagged whatever, but I do not remember the protocol at all now. It is a fact that on my pod (where I am now possibly the sole user) #linux pulls about 10 posts a month.

Umm - I just pulled up #Linux for instance and am getting everyone on every federated pod on that page. Works fine. And since I am following #Linux all those posts are in my feed. Again works fine.

@Adam Hunt I think I should re-read the D* protocol and how it's suposed to work; right now I believe that your suggestion doesn't work the way you believe it does, which aligns with my preceived working of the protocol. Namely, following a hashtag does not pull (federate) posts from all the pod networks, only sift through the local pod.

My example is #linux, which I am following, and the last non-german post apart from you and @dianea (and a few bots) was 2 months ago (from @danie10). If one post in 2 months is full, then it is.

I also follow #disapora and indeed, it has a lot of posts, but reading about the network itself feels like having a great time with myself.

I do not intend to follow any image-based stream, cats or else. If I wanted I'd be on Instagram (I am not even registered I think). I am more of a content person instead of an image (meme) one.

Ah you can just follow tags, try watching #Linux #caturday #diaspora and your feed will be full.

I made a new wallpaper for my #linux desktop.
It combines some #bash scripting with #conky and xrootgif to display random notes with information I want to memorize.
I also wanted to use some retro textures and effects reminiscent of some horror games.

:linux: Guess who I'm going to send this signed Pepper & Carrot comic to? 😺

A top view on a desk with a stylus and pens. In the center of the photo, a Pepper&Carrot book 4 (Glénat French publishing) open at page one: the purple one. On it a black and white drawing of Pepper holding a giant stylus in her arms (she also does a thumb up), the stylus one shines as if it was new. Near to her, a penguin with steampunk glasses is happy.

Re-reading your question it looks to me that I didn't answer (get) your question @Simon John.

If you refer to user name, and hosting data I guess the answer is yes, it looks like plain text from the front end.
The password apparently at least can be protected by a general password manager.

Has there been general questioning of #FileZilla's safety?
Is there some recommendation for linux desktops?

#linux #fedihelp #safety

@davidrevoy yes, it's a bit unfortunate, hopefully in the future the instance might be able to use the new features of #peertube which allow off-loading some of the encoding to other machines.

I really hope that the #blender community will begin to embrace these alternatives, as we do with #Linux, the #Fediverse for example. Currently, it is not perfect, but unless we support them, they will never be mature.

Come to think of it, Blender is the post child for this mindset😀
