Hey friends! https://ottawa.place is now open for signups 🎉🇨🇦❤️

@andrew and I built it as a hosted-in-Canada, capital-region-focused (but open to all Canadians) instance.

Please boost so folks can find us! 👀

Notable that Marc Andreessen backed Elon’s Twitter takeover and is now also backing Post.news, Twitter’s main competitor outside Mastodon. Once again, you think you’re given a choice but the rich get richer either path you take!

One thing I think is missing from some conversations I’ve seen about the #twitterMigration is awareness (maybe on both sides!) that the experiences of some of the people coming from #twitter were very literally traumatic.

Felt dread all the time. Regularly driven to tears or worse. Stress manifesting as physical discomfort. Learned to walk on eggshells and feel shame and terror over spontaneous levity or genuine self expression.

Twitter did not necessarily have widespread and robust conversations about what trauma might look like in terms of social media. It’s difficult to think of it as even applying to yourself, if that’s a new idea.

If twitter people seem mistrustful, overly cautious, argumentative, too emotionally reactive or unreactive, prone to taking things personally, or prone to excessive self recrimination, they might be inherently difficult people, maybe. Or, spitballing, they might be recovering from a terribly toxic environment.

Or they might be giants, idk.

If your instance is blocking an instance with folks you'd like to still read, you can add any Mastodon account to your feed reader (I like NetNewsWire myself) by using the following formula:

https://instance.name/@user.rss

Honestly I'm starting to feel that Mastodon is the most convincing emerging Twitter competitor simply because people are blatantly intentionally pretending to misunderstand it as a means of identity formation and value signalling in a way that they're not doing with any of the other next-gen (or legacy) services #TwitterMigration #meta

That's taking time. It's taking some lessons in humility on my part; realizing I don't have all the answers.

And it's taking some patience.

That's not easy; we're watching warily as the #TwitterMigration grows.

But we've had some great contacts this weekend, and good people showing interest. I'm really hopeful.

Thanks to everyone who's expressing supportt. I think we plan to have more info and structure as the week progresses.

American Thanksgiving is a good week for Canadians to talk!

maybe *your* business plans should go in that direction!

I'm not doing business plans. I've got a full time job already.

I'm just trying to set up co-op hosting so we can handle the #TwitterMigration as it comes in.

A lot of confusion here!

This is to host new users from the #TwitterMigration.

If you can give them a place to park, you should.

People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!
#TwitterMigration

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.
The plot shows the graph of the number of new users in the Mastodon platform as a function of the date for the last months.
It can be seen that until Musk's purchase was completed, the daily new users were about one thousand.
It jumped to twenty-five thousand during the first migration to Mastodon, just after the Musk's purchase of Twitter was completed on October 27.
A second jump to 100k new users per day happened in the second wave, just after the massive layoffs in Twitter on Nov 4th.
Finally the third jump to almost 150k per day happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum on Nov 17th.

Something that is very frustrating:

Journo: "If Mastodon is so cool, why didn't it take off in 2016".

My dude (and it's almost always a dude), it's almost 2023.

I shouldn't have to explain what social lock-in is anymore.

Social Media has been around long enough for you to know that people don't just move platforms.

They need to see that their friends are jumping first.

That's what is happening right now.

Newbies from the #TwitterMigration should know this: content discovery works different here.

1. There's no universal search
2. Popularity of hashtags varies instance to instance
3. There's no secret algorithm

The silver lining to the #TwitterMigration: maybe this will result in more funding, more people willing to develop the Fediverse to its full potential.

As I keep telling you, there's more to this endeavour than being a Twitter replacement!

We have the chance to entirely re-make the Internet!

If you want to know how big the current #TwitterMigration is to Mastodon, look at this current chart.

I have never seen anything this massive.

For those out of the loop:

Twitter's closing its offices as employees quit in droves. It actually might now exist next month.

There's now yet another #TwitterMigration as people create new account on Mastodon. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/twitter-offices-closed-1.6655881

Several weeks into the #TwitterMigration it seems clear to me the value of Mastodon is not that it is a Twitter replacement, but that it is a gateway technology to decentralization. Mastodon has flaws, I'm not claiming it's perfect, but many criticisms I've seen stem from expecting centralized services from a decentralized structure. It's up to us to try and explain the differences and set expectations for what alternative services can look like.

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

#Introduction Hello Mastodon! I've spent the last day looking around and I like what I see, so thanks #fediverse for what you've built, and the warm welcome to new folks like me.

Who am I? I am no one. Just someone who's been lucky enough to work in #Antarctica for 16 years, and is back for another summer season, this time on the #antarcticpeninsula .

I am employed here, but don't represent anyone but me. I'm proud to work in Antarctica, and happy to share with you. Not a #twittermigration .

#TwitterMigration day 10: Facing a sustained barrage of welcoming posts I have no use for, I've actually had to unfollow a couple people to keep my timeline relevant.

And it's okay, not everybody is chasing maximum noise in their own use of social network.

So, Fediverse veterans? How are you feeling with a little success, lately? Is this a case of "don't wish too hard," or are you enjoying the #TwitterMigration (some say #invasion)? It's okay to be honest. We're all friends here.

Quick tip: if you camelCase your hashtags, people who use screen readers will have an easier time with them.

So, for example: #twitterMigration or #TwitterMigration instead of #twittermigration
