If you absolutely must talk to people who share an interest, it's far better to join an instance that's dedicated to that interest.

Put another way: you won't find many heavy metal recommendations in kpop.social.
It's best to think of Mastodon less as a content discovery tool that will show you what's trending, and more like a really addictive communications tool with notifications and feeds.
