A couple things to think about here:

This appears to be a malicious maintainer - not a compromised account. Meaning the person themselves, coded this in an pushed it out.

So:
1) Did they try and backdoor any other code?
2) Are they part of a greater campaign or is anyone else helping them.

This is a massive breach of trust.

That said! Huge kudos to Andres Freund, Florian Weimer, and others in finding this.

A lot of eyes are on this now. CISA is involved. Major distros are involved, etc. Many eyes and such.

Dear #photographers & visual #artists running #Linux, what are your tricks for #colour -accurate #scanning photo prints on consumer-grade gear (not a film/drum scanner)?

I have 3+ #scanners, all with wildly different #color results, as you can see below. At least 2 of them can scan directly over LAN (in Simple Scan).

Ideally I'd want #colormanagement / calibration of scans, ideally with "Simple Scan" (otherwise, how do you do it with XSane?). I have a ColorMunki spectrophotometer, if it helps.

Sample scans, without retouching, from:

- A consumer-grade Brother MFP-5840
- An enterprise-grade HP MFP M477dw
- A consumer-grade HP Envy 5055

Surprisingly, the presumably crappy HP Envy scanner seems to yield results that are more neutral (less saturated, less contrasted) and much closer to reality. The histograms vary wildly from one scan to another. We cannot trust our eyes, but if you're reading this, you probably already know this.

Is there concern for snaps or flatpaks? Checking my own stuff it looks like applications using bundled liblzma are running in the 5.2.* - 5.4.* versions, but if someone has a bleeding edge application running an affected version, what would the remediation be? Would uninstalling it be sufficient?

I want SuperTuxKart to include Voice Acting for these karts in Version 2.0. In fact, One that I knew who Voiced Pepper in Morevna Project's Pepper and Carrot Animated Comics was Samantha Faye Ignacio. If @morevnaproject would know for this 3D open-source racing game, then this would be real. @davidrevoy

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring Mozilla Location Services which provided an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰

https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃

Anarch-cow certainly has a point

Certainly, it is already no longer possible, in my view, to call oneself an anarchist without adding a qualifying adjective to distinguish oneself from lifestyle anarchists. -- Murray Bookchin

Boost for visibility.

To the #Windows and #macOS users of Mastodon who have tried #Linux and ended up still using Windows or macOS:

What is it about the Linux distro(s) you tried that made it/them unsuitable for your use? If some problem or set of problems was fully resolved, would it be enough for you to be able to comfortably use Linux?

The poll is just a list of possible things that could make Linux difficult or impossible to use for some, please feel free to comment with specifics.

My #Hungarian teacher asked me yesterday if I could help her with her computer, because she had some issues. Old retired woman.

When she started her PC, it turned out, she is using #Ubuntu #Linux.

As a latecomer and occasional gamer I truly enjoyed the game #Witcher3 (+DLC).
Also worths mentioning that it's been done on #linux (using #lutris).

Here's some cool news: libinput - the underlying input API for #Linux nowadays - will support dials on drawing tablets soon! 🎉 A lot of XP-PEN's Artist Pro series have these controls for example.

@whot pushed along the API I originally made about a year ago, many thanks 😮 This means that applications that use libinput can make use of these dials soon, like Wayland compositors. If you're technically inclined, you can see the completed MR here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/-/merge_requests/967

Demo Hype „Star Trucker“ [EN]

I play the demo of the space truck simulation „Star Trucker“ by Monster and Monster. The final game is about to be released somewhen in the year 2024 by Raw Fury.
The demo available for Windows only. I use Proton 8.0-5 to play it on Linux, no further tricks needed.
Whether the final release will have native versions for Linux or MacOS, I can't say at the moment.

This whole forced microsoft copilot thing is making me so mad. Been thinking for a while of having a second hard drive with a linux distro for my personal work that i can boot to, and keeping windows for external work stuff.

Not sure how to go about doing this, though, does anyone have any advice on this?

Also for distros i was thinking popOS since I recall @davidrevoy using it for his work. I have been using Kubuntu on a laptop and it works great, but I am open to suggestions. I mostly use Krita, Scribus and OpenOffice.

But to be fair ...

Is it the implementation language being the main issue? Or is it the flexibility of extending it with plugins and that it is effectively a setuid tool, granting root access immediately when an unprivileged user starts the program (the privileges are reduced first when it has parsed the sudo config).

Sudo is a nice tool from the user's side. But security wise it's a disastrous approach. Privileges should first be elevated *after* the config has been parsed and the expected privilege level has been established. Then the tool should ideally jump to that privilege level directly.

This post introduces some new ideas ... https://tim.siosm.fr/blog/2023/12/19/ssh-over-unix-socket/

It's not a perfect approach in all cases. But it gets rid of the setuid issue.

As of today, you can access your encrypted #ProtonMail inbox and #ProtonCalendar on #Windows and #macOS without a browser or a third-party email app.

🐧 The #Linux app is also in the works.

Thanks to your initial feedback, these include improvements like:
🗓️ Easier access to Proton Calendar
⏩ Easy migration from #Gmail
🚨 Notification badges
🔠 Improved accessibility and font support

and more!

All paid Proton subscribers can try out the beta today https://proton.me/support/mail-desktop-app

There's a Proton Mail logo on the top of the image. Underneath is the following text:
"Now in beta for paid Proton Mail plans". The text is followed by the logos of Microsoft Windows and Apple.
The screenshot of the Proton Mail macOS app. The mouse cursor is hovering over the calendar icon, and the tooltip saying "Open Calendar" appears above it.
