The Debian Project mourns the loss of Peter De Schrijver
"Peter was highly regarded for his technical expertise in problem solving and for his willingness to share that knowledge. When asked "what are you working on?", Peter would often take the time to explain something you thought was extremely complicated understandably, or show you in-person his high technical proficiency in action on such tasks as translating a disassembled binary into C source code. Peter's work, ideals, and memory leave a remarkable legacy and a loss that is felt around the world not only in the many communities he interacted with but in those he inspired and touched as well."
For the past several months no one could install flatpaks from our Trade-Free TROMjaro app Library - https://www.tromjaro.com/apps/ - and now we finally fixed it thanks to @Rokosun ! One click installs 😀
We have curated around 700 trade-free apps for the library and we plan to add a lot more the following months. Check it out!

I really really REALLY wish that when I comment about #Linux DE #UX people would understand:
1. This is coming from a place of love for Linux, I want it to get better
2. I'm fairly new here and WILL make mistakes
3. I'm very welcome to be corrected
4. I'm not attacking anyone
I'm a #UX expert, not a Linux expert. I'm absolutely going to say stupid things. Could I possibly go a bit slower and be more diplomatic? Sure. Could people also not freak out and assume the worst? Please.
Casual UT2003 CtF match [against bots] in 2024 🤘🤓🤘
In 2020 I checked some old backup disks of mine and found to my utmost joy a copy of my former UT2003 installation. This is a Linux native 32bit build that is now over 20 years old. Well, LinuxGaming is hard because who can support 500 distributions, right? This worked just fine in 2020 on Fedora 31. Today I gave it another spin in 2024 on Fedora 38 on Wayland with PipeWire 😀
Hell yeah, the muscle memory is still there 🤘🤓🤘
(tbf the SDL1.2 compat lib rocks most of this but it's really all still there)

Techies vs spies: the xz backdoor debate
Diving into some of the dynamics and the interpretations of the brazen ploy to subvert the liblzma compression library.lcamtuf (lcamtuf’s thing)
I have tried to switch from white-on-black xterms to black-on-white, since it's told to be a less strain on the eyes, but it's kind of impossible due to everyone defaulting their color schemes on WoB. It feels like a hopeless fight.
Otherwise it's really eye-soothing, but it's definitely not mind soothing the guy need to reconfigure everyfuckingthing.
A couple things to think about here:
This appears to be a malicious maintainer - not a compromised account. Meaning the person themselves, coded this in an pushed it out.
So:
1) Did they try and backdoor any other code?
2) Are they part of a greater campaign or is anyone else helping them.
This is a massive breach of trust.
That said! Huge kudos to Andres Freund, Florian Weimer, and others in finding this.
A lot of eyes are on this now. CISA is involved. Major distros are involved, etc. Many eyes and such.
Urgent security alert for Fedora Linux 40 and Fedora Rawhide users
Red Hat Information Risk and Security and Red Hat Product Security learned that the latest versions of the “xz” tools and libraries contain malicious code that appears to be intended to allow unauthorized access., (Red Hat)
Dear #photographers & visual #artists running #Linux, what are your tricks for #colour -accurate #scanning photo prints on consumer-grade gear (not a film/drum scanner)?
I have 3+ #scanners, all with wildly different #color results, as you can see below. At least 2 of them can scan directly over LAN (in Simple Scan).
Ideally I'd want #colormanagement / calibration of scans, ideally with "Simple Scan" (otherwise, how do you do it with XSane?). I have a ColorMunki spectrophotometer, if it helps.
Is there concern for snaps or flatpaks? Checking my own stuff it looks like applications using bundled liblzma are running in the 5.2.* - 5.4.* versions, but if someone has a bleeding edge application running an affected version, what would the remediation be? Would uninstalling it be sufficient?

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring Mozilla Location Services which provided an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰
https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065
This is used by GNOME and thus Fedora, Ubuntu, Endless OS, etc. to help provide OS-level location services without requiring every app to implement its own. And apparently a patent troll is part of the reason Mozilla stopped investing in it. 🙃

Anarch-cow certainly has a point
Certainly, it is already no longer possible, in my view, to call oneself an anarchist without adding a qualifying adjective to distinguish oneself from lifestyle anarchists. -- Murray Bookchin

Here's some cool news: libinput - the underlying input API for #Linux nowadays - will support dials on drawing tablets soon! 🎉 A lot of XP-PEN's Artist Pro series have these controls for example.
@whot pushed along the API I originally made about a year ago, many thanks 😮 This means that applications that use libinput can make use of these dials soon, like Wayland compositors. If you're technically inclined, you can see the completed MR here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libinput/libinput/-/merge_requests/967
