I was running all of our websites - see https://status.tromsite.com (plus our personal ones) from 2 servers paying 68 Euros a month. On TROM.tf I was at the limit of our storage space. Now I run the same websites with some 72 Euros a month and double the storage space, via 2 hosting companies (never put all eggs into one basket) - Webdock and Hetzner.

Plus I need to pay 270 Euros a year for backing up all of our servers to BorgBase. 4TB of data.

Lastly I pay 13 Euros a month for my and my family's personal files backups (5TB - plenty of storage for years to come).

A few days ago someone was asking me over email how can I sustain TROM financially with so many services and projects. Well it is because I work a lot to manage these servers and backups, else it would be 5 times more expensive. And thanks to @YunoHost I am able to provide the many services we provide via TROM.tf. Without them there would be no TROM.tf. I wish I had more money to support them too, a little bit. But TROM is far from being financially sustainable.

But damn I love that we have our own social network, video platform, cloud for files and collaboration, chat, and more. Thanks to the open source projects like Friendica, Peertube, Matrix, Nextcloud and so forth.

ZDay: How to Grow a Saner Society. A Lifetime Adventure --- by Tio

On 26th of August, 2023, we presented TROM at the annual ZDay event in Prague. This was the last ZDay after a decade long of making them every year.

Our presentation was focused on showcasing in a unique way how our society works and how trade is at the core of most of our issues. In the second half we focused on the positive side: how we and others create trade-free good and services and why this can become a tsunami movement if more of us engage into it, in a decentralized way.

We put a lot of effort into creating a simple narrative and interesting slides with animations, to make it all more fun and easy to understand.

This was the first presentation for Tio and we hope more to follow.

If there is 1 "mainstream" science "thing" that I do not agree with, and neither the researchers doing real science are, is this: mental disorders are a result of some bio/chemical imbalance/reason.

This is simply not true. There is no study showing this. From twin studies to genetics, there is nothing conclusive that says these behaviors that humans put in narrow boxes are a result of anything more than a combination of things. And it seems mostly of the environment one grows up in.

And this is the only science-topic that I would agree the "big pharmaceutical" companies are the ones pushing this nonscientific "pill model". You depressed? Simple! Take a pill! You sad, anxious, too energetic? We have pills for that too.

But even these pills are no better than placebo.

And in this way we do not see that it is this society that makes people miserable. If we don't fix the society at best we can numb people with pills and make them accept this shithole.

And Reddit will basically not allow 3rd parties to access the content so you are stuck with the terrible Reddit website/app.

Now Youtube is cracking down on services like Invidious to make sure no one accesses Youtube unless they use the official website/app. And Nitter/Bibliogram/Teddit and the like, that were interfaces for the above ad networks, will probably either stop working or be a pain in the ass to keep them working.

Let's see how this evolves, but probably we will have to give up ytb.trom.tf, bird.trom.tf and rdt.trom.tf. And basically people should forget about Twitter and move to the fediverse. Forget about Reddit entirely and not even move anywhere else, do something else with their life. As for youtube the issue is that they completely own the video space, so moving to Peertube is never going to be an option in terms of finding videos to watch. So I highly recommend the amazing FreeTube https://freetubeapp.io/ - that runs locally and it seems to be a long term robust solution. It makes youtube a video platform and not an ad platform.

These companies do not provide social networks or video platforms, they may partially provide that but in truth they are ad networks. Like a Mall that has benches, fake palm trees and recreational areas. The Mall's main purpose is to sell you shit, not for you to go there and meet with your friends and relax. Therefore these companies will do all they can to restrict the content that OTHERS have created on their platforms, so that you "go to their Mall" to watch those ads, and for them to collect your data, and grab your currency.

It's all about that trade!
