Who owns your shiny new #Pixel 9 #phone? You can’t say no to #Google’s #surveillance

Source: https://cybernews.com/security/google-pixel-9-phone-beams-data-and-awaits-commands/

Every 15 minutes, #GooglePixel 9 Pro XL sends a data packet to Google. The device shares #location, email address, phone number, #network status, and other #telemetry. Even more concerning, the phone periodically attempts to download and run new code, potentially opening up #security risks...

FOSS Browser v 16 "Richard Stallman" (WIP)

!Friendica Support Anyone out there using Friendica with mobile #Firefox on #Android? Tried it again for a while this weekend but eventually gave up (again) because, in the web UI on my device, Friendica / frio became almost unusable while trying to "@" - mention some user. Either loading or displaying suggestions / completions seems incredibly slow here. Is this just me? Any other experiences?

Why I use #Firefox

  1. The about:config page
  2. Mozilla cannot decrypt my data on their servers
  3. Translating web pages is also completely private
  4. Mozilla develops their own browser engine
  5. The best support for extensions on #Android
  6. A great picture-in-picture player

I #trust #Mozilla more than I trust #Google, #Apple, #Microsoft, or any other company that makes #web browsers. This trust is based on the fact that Mozilla chooses the highest level of user privacy when developing services such as Firefox Sync, Firefox Translate, and others. A web browser is an integral part of a person’s #online life, so it makes sense to choose a #browser from a company that one trusts the most.

An interesting #android app appeared in F-Droid: whoBIRD, that tries to recognize #bird species by sound. It uses well-known #birdNET model, but contrary to official birdNET app, whoBIRD works offline – a very welcome feature, as internet access in the woods or among bogs usually leaves much to be desired.

I have yet to test it on real #birds, but so far it has properly recognized “human whistle” and ”machinery sounds” ;)

Rumor has it on the next Android update, Google's Bard AI will help you write your text messages. But there's a catch: the processing is done on Google's servers, not your device, so your messages will be sent to Google as you type them. It will be possible to disable the AI, though. If your messages are sent to Google, they will be stored for 18 months and can be seen by humans in "anonymized" form.

Google update shows how Bard AI may work with your messages app

FFS.

So who can recommend a #android #sms app that isn't about to get all the messages fed into an AI and some fucking chatbot piping up like a neoclippy trying to tell me what to think?

Will removing Google's SMS app and installing some other one be enough to stop this?

All I Want for Christmas is... a Smart Phone?

Anyone have experience using #Krita on an android tablet? I feel like it's really designed to be used with a keyboard from what I've seen. Not to mention the overwhelming amount of UI for an android app.

Right now, I'm using #IbisPaint, but I really want to switch to a #FOSS option.

We thought Google hit rock bottom with #privacy.

Its new beta feature on Google Files for #Android called “Smart Search" is the trap door.

This creepy new feature on by default & scans every file on your phone. Why is this bad? Because it could potentially ruin your life. (1/3)

@Hank G ☑️ could Relatica save the information which group/circle was viewed last and start with that instead of my general timeline? Or maybe a setting which group to show when starting the app?

How times change… bought a pair of #Bluetooth ear buds, and they work out of the box on a plain #Debian Linux system with #PipeWire, whereas my #Android #LineageOS phone refuses to connect to them. A few years ago it would have been the opposite.

Before me asking others here in the #fediverse for recommendations about #Fdroid #apps , I did not know about #KryptEY

#YouTube's proprietary #Android #app is so glitchy that now I can't even watch a video maximized. On too of multiple crippling bugs regarding writing comments and how it's usability is so poor - partially by design and partially by incompetence.
I have no choice but watch via #NewPipe. But it's official site was actively delisted from search results by Google, making people looking for it vulnerable to going to fake scam websites instead.
I think YT is sinking. Backup your favourite stuff maybe?

Hello @Friendica Support
I'm writing to you from #Colombia, #SouthAmerica. My account is hosted on a server in #Argentina. I'd like to know how, either from #Fedilab on #Android or from a browser on #Windows10, I could follow several tags simultaneously, without having to add them one by one.
I'd also like to know how to use #Friendica as my "main network", so that when I post on #Friendica, the post is also done automatically on #Mastodon and #Diaspora*.
Thank you very much.

#kbin + #lemmy app is coming along. Here's a preview of the upcoming beta. This is less than a week’s worth of work, so it’s only up from here 😉

Based on polls, looks like Artemis is winning for the name. Which is a great tribute to #ApolloApp 🙏

Stalk my work and suggest ideas in the app's Discord server (link in bio).

We've been told Google Play transparently shows what data is collected etc, right? And whether an app has Ads? Well, dream on. I've just checked an app to see if it would fit my repo. Below is what Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.isaakhanimann.journal) says about it (no "Ads" marker), then the results from my library scanner.

Careful what you believe and whom you trust.

#Android #apps #Google #GooglePlay
"Data Safety" section of the app on Google Play, saying "No data shared with third parties. No data collected"
For the very same app: Results by my library scanner, showing the app contains libraries of 2 Analytics frameworks (Crashlytics, Firebase Analytics) plus Google Ads. This must mean that Google is no "third party" and doesn't collect any data. And the pope is muslim I guess, or so.

So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

It's enshitification in action.
