since Pamela Paul has written *yet another* anti-trans #NYTimes op-ed, time for me to re-up my uber-critique of this genre of articles – no paywall, please share widely!

Did you know that the first paramedics were Black Pittsburghers? The wildly successful program they were in became a model across the USA, but in Pittsburgh itself they were canned and replaced by all-white crews.

There's a whole book about it, American Sirens. https://time.com/6215072/first-paramedics-black-men-history/

#SouthAfrica #NHI has signs of being similar to the UK's #Brexit as there does not seem to be full objective context about exactly what the real implications will be. It all sounds so attractive, but I hope we don't wake up later to seriously regret it and have a #health industry in tatters...

Question for fitness conscious nomads: where are some great locations in the world for health and wellness optimization? Beyond good gyms, I'm looking for places that have access to highly qualified sports and functional medicine doctors, cutting edge medical technology, diagnostic tests, peptide injections, MDMA assisted therapy, etc. #fitness #health #wellness #functionalmedicine #peptides #sportsmedicine #digitalnomad #medicaltourism #mdma #huberman #peterattia #timferris #biohacking

Preferred Covid-19 mitigation strategies included those that resulted in 1) lower infection risk (such as sheltering-in-place more days a week), 2) financial compensation from the government, 3) fewer health (mental and physical) problems, and 4) fewer financial problems.

New Zealand passes legislation banning cigarettes for future generations

"Legislation passed by parliament on Tuesday means that anyone born after 2008 will never be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products. The bill is also designed to limit the number of retailers able to sell smoked tobacco products to 600 nationwide - down from 6,000 currently - and reduce nicotine levels in products to make them less addictive."

We need this everywhere.

Google’s Quest to Digitize Troops’ Tissue Samples
--
#Google had a confidential plan to turn the collection—slivers of skin, #tumor biopsies & slices of organs from #veterans—into an immense archive that could help create tools to aid the diagnosis & treatment of #cancer & other #diseases. And it would seek first, exclusive dibs to do so.

“The chief concern,” Google’s liaison in the #military warned, “is keeping this out of the press.”

It’s fascinating to see the recent series of stories about how so few of the tech companies’ future bets actually panned out as planned: drone delivery, autonomous cars, crypto, etc. Alexa is just the latest to add to the pile.

What’s concerning though: Amazon’s “new favorite child” is its health tech business. The last thing we need is more privatization and tech companies distracting us from what matters in healthcare.
