‘Completely #unethical’: Women excluded from life-saving vaccine

Women in #Scotland are being left at risk of a killer #cancer because of the refusal to fund a preventative #vaccine through the #NHS, according to a leading #medical ethicist.

Females aged 26-45 are currently excluded from the #HPV vaccine which protects against #cervical cancer and genital warts even though it is offered to men in high-risk groups in the same age category.

I stand corrected.
We received a bill for my husband's trip to the French public hospital ER.

That was early February, 6 hours there.
1 lab test.
1 electrocardiogram
1 brain scan
Total: 297.74 euros ($322.42).
I've put the detail in the alt-text.

That's the bill with NO insurance.

I'm pretty, pretty, pretty sure it's still way below what people would pay in the US.

Detail of the bill from the ER of a French public hospital.
It shows what you pay (in euros) when you have no insurance.
Flat-fee Activity check-up (age 75+): 49.17
Supplement for insurance: 19.34
Flat-fee Normal technical (I guess the basic tests they do at the ER?): 99.69
Flat-fee ER: 19.61
Supplement biology (age 45+) (blood test): 55.50
Supplement scanner: 54.43

When I first saw this, I thought, "This is the horrible sort of low-end treatment our healthcare system is bringing us to - where we get surgery at the mall." And now I think, "No, we're not headed in a direction that's this nice."

UPDATE: WE GOT PAXLOVID! Your inputs worked. Thank you!!
***

#LongCovid #Covid19 friends, I need urgent help:

wife tested positive for covid. It's bad. Online Doc refused to prescribe #Paxlovid citing she's <50yrs. Said LongCovid isn't real and pretty much gaslit the thing.

PCP offices are closed.

CVS w/o prescription requires labwork that we don't have handy.

The blockers in the US #healthcare are systemic.

In GA, how might we get Paxlovid? Any ideas?

The EU has coordinated the medical evacuations of more than 2,300 Ukrainian patients to European hospitals since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Patients suffering from war injuries or serious medical conditions that cannot currently be treated inside Ukraine have been transferred to hospitals in 21 European countries, as part of a scheme launched in March 2022.

“We’re Still Gonna Say No”: Inside UnitedHealthcare’s Effort to Deny Coverage to Chronically Ill Patient
--
After a college student finally found a treatment for his ulcerative colitis that worked, the insurance giant decided it wouldn’t pay for the costly drugs.

His fight to finally get coverage exposed the insurer’s hidden procedures for rejecting claims.

This should be criminal. States with heavily restrictive abortion access had a maternal death rate 62% HIGHER than states that didn’t.

The analysis came from the Commonwealth Fund, an independent research org focused on health policy, and — this is the saddest part — was conducted BEFORE Roe v Wade was overturned.
