Vor einigen Wochen habe ich Ian Steward auf einem Automattic Meetup kennengelernt. Er kam auf mich zu, um mir zu erzählen, dass er kürzlich auf einen ziemlich alten Artikel von mir gestoßen ist. In diesem Artikel geht es darum, wie man die Reihenfolge der Sidebars im K2-WordPress-Theme ändert.

Ich habe K2 sehr lange auf notiz.Blog eingesetzt und mich viel und lange mit dessen technischem Aufbau und der semantischen HTML-Struktur beschäftigt!

Aber außer dem kurzen Schwelgen in alten Erinnerungen hab ich mir nicht weiter Gedanken zu dem Thema gemacht. Immerhin gibt es das Theme schon seit einer halben Ewigkeit nicht mehr und Sidebars sind auch aus der Mode!(?)!

Dann schreibt @ricmac letzte Woche aber folgendes auf Mastodon:

Thinking about a personal website re-design (or a new site), so I can play around with fediverse integration, sidebar culture, and other fun things. Thinking of using @[url=https://fosstodon.org/users/eleventy]Eleventy 🎈 v2.0.1[/url] (have used Hugo before and this seems better). Maybe a new site is better, as I don’t want to have to migrate ricmac.org from WordPress…for now, anyway. Is it normal for people to have two personal websites these days? I should just start a test site with 11ty and see how it goes… #thinkingoutloud

Up to this point we basically performed a standard LAMP installation on a ubuntu 22.04 LTS VPS hosting.

The following steps concern the actual friendica server installation.

creating the directory for friendica and the user www-data

Hi,
I'm working on my first #friendica #VPS installation, here you'll find my initial post about general thoughts like what distro to use, size and costs.
I'm using the tutorial "creating a friendica server - ubuntu" by @Hank G ☑️.

As of now I'm doing well in the process and want to start this post to document differences and questions while installing the server.

This server is going to host an already existing friendica node I have to move from another hosting provider. That means that for example the DB doesn't have to be created from scratch but moved and other smaller details.

I will try to address the different steps of installation in answers to this post and appreciate help, ideas and observations.

I'm doing this from a #linux desktop environment from the console but there shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.

So I've been inspired!

Yesterday my friend Alex posted this wonderful reply here to a new user that signed up on Kawen Space that describes some popular servers they are going to run into. You can read that post here. It has inspired me to write my own much longer guide/recommendations to all of the servers I am familiar with. This list will be in alphabetical order by instance name and contain only my own opinions. There will be a piece on Misskey and single-user instances at the bottom.

Before we begin, if you really are new to the fedi you should first take a look at this wiki of the fediverse's history created by Bob Mottram

For each entry I will recommend a few prolific users from the instance I recommend checking out. There is always more users I could mention on these servers but I simply can't list everybody. I'm sorry if you don't get included and feel left out. All comments made about people in this post are only my opinion. I follow most of the people I mention, but not all of them. So let's begin:

Anime Website

This is a well moderated instance with one of the more transparent blocking practices there is among Pleroma instances. Sometimes the admin says something spicy and is likely why other instances might block this one but this instance is well structured with fair rules. A new user would be happy here.

Who to follow:

@wowaname@anime.website - This is the site admin. Frequently posts. Very cool person. Makes spicy posts.

@yolo@anime.website - Resident shitposter.

@hyphen@anime.website - Also a shitposter.

BSD Dot Moe

This is a general purpose Pleroma server that moderates behavior, not speech. So you can talk shit but you can't be a shit. A good instance overall.

Who to follow:

@nether@bsd.moe - The admin of the instance.

@saga@bsd.moe - A shitposter, also fucking hilarious.

@cvcvcv@bsd.moe - The man, the myth, the legend of edgeposting. Hasn't posted in a month but was known for side-splitting all caps rants that go further beyond anything a facebook boomer is capable of. These posts are not for the faint of heart and are riddled with nonsense and profanity, but it's honestly hilarious. If you've ever had a moment at a family gathering when a grandparent or great grandparent said some really raunchy shit at the dinner table that made everyone speechless, this user is basically that times 1000.

Cybre Space

Do not join this instance. This instance locks registrations behind a donation paywall. Occasionally they will open registrations for free but not often. They also block many instances. You are far better off self hosting your own instance than paying to be on this one. Also the public timeline is so slow on this instance these days it inspired one of its users to write this hilarious article

Who to follow:

literally nobody

Cybre Club

Not to be confused with Cybre Space. This server is closed to registrations but if you ask the admin nicely he might let you in. On the side the admin is working on their own ActivityPub implementation in rust called Kibou and that is really neat.

Cawfee Club

This is a newcomer-friendly instance in the same vein as kawen.space and niu.moe. It has a comfy theme and a competent admin. They don't block any other instances, enabling the users to decide for themselves what they don't want to see. They also can't spell cofe right.

Who to follow:

@grips@cawfee.club - This is the admin of the instance. I'm friends with the admin but I don't really know any of his other users. Perhaps the next active user could be you?

IsCute Dot Moe

This is another general purpose instance with a small community of wholesome posters. Very friendly.

Who to follow:

@kurisu@iscute.moe - The admin of the instance. Has a fine taste in cat girls.

@succfemboi@iscute.moe - Resident shitposter. With the occasional hot take. Quality poster

ehjovan.com

This is a recent instance but worth talking about. This is some influencer guy from Twitter that setup a mastodon server thinking it was like private twitter. Didn't know anything about federation and was surpised other people could see him and his fans posts. They are normies but ultimately harmless. Some of their posts are even, dare I say... funny.

Who to follow:

I guess the admin @jovan@ehjovan.com. This instance opened like a day or two ago it's too early to highlight any standout posters. If twitter humor is your thing, you'll find it here. Maybe don't sign up here but don't shun these people. The Fedi is for everyone.

Fosstodon

This is a well intentioned Mastodon instance that does not disclose its blocklist. It may not have one, but they never reply to my posts so I am assuming they do. If you don't join a naughty server they will probably federate with you just fine. If you like open source stuff, you might enjoy the users there. They do take donations but they thankfully do not lock signups behind a paywall. Signup at your own discretion.

Who to follow:

@kev@fosstodon.org - This is actually Kev Quirk. He's ok.

@mike@fosstodon.org - This is actually Mike Stone. I think I read an article or two that he's written. Or maybe that was another guy. He's ok either way

Free Speech Extremist

This is a very controversial instance but is ultimately harmless. I'd like to take this opportunity to explain something I've posted about on fedi before. This server is a prime example about how having a strong active user base will propel an instance into prosperity. FSE may not be the biggest instance on the fedi, but there are enough active users that if they broke federation tomorrow, or got blocked by literally everyone, then they would probably still have a good time talking amongst themselves (the opposite of mastodon.xyz). The admin is a very good person who is committed to protecting all speech of his users. Even those which he disagrees with, and even the speech of dumb edgeposters who don't actually have an intelligent thought. This makes the public timeline of FSE a tornado of competing ideas, hardened by constant debate and re-evaluation. Some people might find such an environment too hostile to enjoy, but if you like debate and aren't afraid of mean words you will probably have a good time here regardless of what your personal politics are.

A strong local timeline is not to be confused with a large server. Even on major mastodon servers with thousands of active users you can still feel isolated. While on a server like FSE every post you make is an invitation to debate and discuss your ideas. This is why its a running joke that every post on FSE is a potential hellthread. As everyone on that server is interested in debate and discussion of their ideas so their popular threads grow exponentially when they do grow.

Who to follow:

@p@freespeechextremist.com - this is the admin. I'm only going to mention him because there are so many active users on FSE I couldn't just pick a few. You either block FSE, watch FSE, or dive in to their hellthreads. If you aren't self hosting or joining specific servers FSE may be blocked for you so watch out for that if engaging with these people is what you are looking for (or not looking for).

Freeradical Zone

Pretty much the same thing as Liberdon, but liberal instead of libertarian. I know of a user that was banned from this server from posting things that are really out of line with the politics of the admin (assuming they weren't lying to me), but if you wanna be political on fedi, and you're liberal, this server might work out for you. It does not block very many servers, which is rare for Mastodon servers in general.

Who to follow:

@tek@freeradical.zone - The admin. Sometimes posts interesting stories from his travels. He doesn't reply to my posts anymore. I didn't think he was a bad guy or anything though.

Kawen Space: The Pillow Fort of Pleroma Instances

Yes the server really has that title on the top bar.

This is an instance run by @karen@kawen.space (recently posting on a single user test instance @karen@testing.kawen.dance) that is home to many great users. I don't think I've ever had a bad time talking with anybody from this server. This is a top choice for someone new to the fedi that isn't an edgeposter. Karen is a great admin and a lot of people on the fedi look up to her. Karen is also a part time Pleroma contributor and recently took a job working on some ActivityPub software for Moodlenet. She's definitely one of my favorite posters on fedi.

Who to follow:

@lain@kawen.space - one of the alt accounts for the Lain who is a major Pleroma contributor and founded the project

Honestly if I could list every user without making this section too long I would. If someone from this instance comes across your timeline or notifications - check them out and consider following. This server is a goldmine of content.

LALL - LetsAllLoveLain

This instance is a moderated instance that does not participate in any instance blocks. So you have the vision of Shitposter Club with the moderation of the likes of Pleroma Site. This instance is run by two popular admins @essie@letsalllovela.in and @crushv@letsalllovela.in. It is also home to several great users. I am pretty sure the domain name is a reference to Lain the anime character, and not Lain the Pleroma guy, though everyone is a big fan of Lain.

Who to follow:

@essie@letsalllovela.in - one of the admins

@nik@letsalllovela.in - this is a followers only account for the other admin @crushv@letsalllovela.in that seems to have gone off the rails and become the main account. Quality posts

Liberdon

This is a sort of black sheep of mastodon servers. This is a political server of the libertarian/ancap/anarchy/whatever variety. If you like that and want to talk about that, then maybe you'll like this server. They pop up in my feed every once in a while.

Who to follow:

I don't know anybody on this server, but I have to add this section to keep the feng shui of the post.

Mastodon Social

Mastodon Social is the flagship instance for the Mastodon project. The BDFL of Mastodon - @Gargron@mastodon.social once made the righteous decision to close registrations for this instance to encourage people to distribute themselves among the fediverse to strengthen federation. He did a 180 on this and has reopened registrations several times, and they are currently open today. Mastodon was covered by the mainstream media around 2017 and most of the journalists did not understand the concept of federation and would talk about Mastodon the software as Mastodon Social the website interchangeably. This has led to many people signing up on Mastodon Social as their first instance and getting a skewed view of the fediverse. Gargron publishes a table of instances Mastodon Social blocks however there is nothing in the software that exposes the blocks. So this table could be out of date or missing information. For a long time Gargron simply didn't publish any information about what instances are blocked, which is highly disrespectful of his users. Do not sign up on this instance. Also the terms of service for this instance enables them to spy on you, but to be honest they are probably not doing that.

Who to follow:

@dansup@mastodon.social - formerly a contributor to GNU Social and the BDFL of his own project Pixelfed, which is like Instagram federated over ActivityPub.

@tom79@mastodon.social - This is the maintainer for the app Fedilab which is my personal choice for mobile browsing.

That's it! There's really nobody else on this awful instance worth following.

Mastodon Technology

This is yet another Mastodon megaserver with way too many users to forge meaningful discourse locally. They block a lot of instances, including my home Shitposter Club, but there are several official accounts here that might be worth a follow even if you can't respond to them. Maybe don't sign up here.

Who to follow:

@fdroidorg@mastodon.technology - This is the official account for FDroid, which is the best appstore on android

@kde@mastodon.technology - This is the official account for the KDE project. The only correct desktop environment for Linux.

I'm sure there's more but they are all "official" accounts for orgs and stuff like the two above.

Mastodon XYZ

Do not join this instance. This is a general purpose instance similar to Mastodon Social that only balloon'd to the size that it is because it was set up during one of the times where Mastodon Social was closed to registrations. I used to have an account on this server. The admin is frequently absent and the local timeline is dead. It may have many active users, but if you sign up there don't expect them to hold any meaningful conversations with you.

Who to follow:

Everyone worth following on this instance has already left.

No More Shame

To be honest this server has more alt accounts than anything. It's a good server though and would make a fine home for a new user to the fedi. I actually have two bots running on this server. The bible quote in the sidebar is a joke. Also fediverse.network reports a high number of users on this instance but they are all hongepii - a notorious bot herder that makes accounts everywhere that has open registrations and no captcha.

Who to follow:

@xeno@nomoresha.me - The admin. Pro sarcasmposter and ironyposter.

@orekix@nomoresha.me - Cool person. Sometimes gets political. Not sure if this account is the alt or if the aria.company account is the alt but I enjoy this person's posts a lot.

@xenobot@nomoresha.me - An image bot I made for the Xeno franchise. Has more images than all my other bots.

Niu

This might be the the best Mastodon server that exists. The admin posts in French and English and the server is one of the earlier Mastodon servers that has stood the test of time. It's a shame so many Mastodon servers block them, they don't have a good reason to do so. A bunch of servers actually blocked Niu after a troll cropped a screenshot of a post the admin made to make it sound like they supported the alt-right, when they actually don't. Concerning any Mastodon instance dumb enough to block Niu - it's their loss.

Who to follow:

@rice@niu.moe - Very cool person. Posts on a variety of subjects.

@jibriltheflugel@niu.moe - Fine taste in cute shit.

@turbomoist@niu.moe - Cool person.

@limitofx@niu.moe - Also has a fine taste in cute shit.

@newt@niu.moe - quality posts.

@normandy@niu.moe - used to have a self hosted instance, moved to this one. Quality poster.

No Agenda Social

This is a Mastodon instance run by the the No Agenda podcast. This is a popular sponsor-less podcast that runs entirely on donations by the fans. They are blocked in a lot of places because they are known to talk shit about the American right-wing and the American left-wing politics and some people don't like that. If you are a fan of the show, you'll fit right in. They appear to handle account sign up off-site and I have no idea what you have to do to create yourself an invite. If you listen to their show, you probably already know better than me.

This instance does not disclose its blocklist publically, but most likely they have this information elsewhere and I just don't know where it is. That or they only suspend/silence individual users as that's what their about/more page makes it sound like.

Who to follow:

@adam@noagendasocial.com - This is the Adam Curry. From MTV. He is the host of the show.

Octodon.social

This instance is closed to registrations. This is a Mastodon megaserver with over 11,000 users. Their rules are laid out more clearly than Mastodon Social however they block a lot of servers and most of them under the blanket reasoning of "allowing hate speech" which isn't actually true of some of the instances they list. They probably didn't put very much thought into their blocklist and their blocklist is also most likely larger than they have published, which is disrespectful to their users. Never join a server that doesn't publish a blocklist and commit to keeping it updated.

Who to follow:

Lili's Instance - Pikachu Rocks

This instance is closed to registrations so I will keep this short. This instance is run by Lili (@waifu@pikachu.rocks) and has all of the positive qualities I've described in the section about kawen.space, just with fewer users. One of my bots is on this instance as well - @nierbot@pikachu.rocks and that's cool

Who to follow:

@waifu@pikachu.rocks - The admin. Also one of my first fedifriends. If she didn't respond to my posts (along with Azu) back in my mastodon.xyz days I probably would have given up on the fedi before moving to SPC. One of my favorite posters. Plays a LOT of Fire Emblem.

@solidsanek@pikachu.rocks - The token french boy. Brightens up every thread he's in.

@nierbot@pikachu.rocks - my first image bot. You will like this.

Playvicious Social

This Mastodon instance is closed to registrations but the admin has a patreon. Looking at the admins recent posts you can contact them for an invite for free so there is no paywall, just some manual vetting, which is fine. The admin is known for posting hot takes and responding with hostility/being a jerk but judging by what is written in their bio and on their patreon page I would probably get along with this person IRL. However all the instances I'm on are blocked and the hostility in the admins posts are at odds with his self description between his bio and patreon. Maybe he's more chill offline? I don't really know much about this instance but you're bound to see it in your timeline eventually. Hence why I am mentioning it here.

The users of this server are also not afraid to put the assoles of witches.live in their place, and for that they have my respect. Even if we will probably never talk to each other.

Pleroma Site

This is a Pleroma instance run by @kaniini@pleroma.site who is a major contributor to the Pleroma project. I personally enjoy Kaniini's posts but there is a sizable group of Pleroma users that don't. I won't go into detail on the motivations behind the haters because most of it is either bullshit or shit that's already been apologized for. Point is most of the threads Kaniini gets into can get spicy for one reason or another.

Comments on the admin aside, Pleroma Site is a great example of what a Pleroma instance should be. While Pleroma servers expose who they are blocking, muting, etc via their Nodeinfo (which is easily seen on fediverse.network this instance keeps notes on who it blocks and why on a seperate webpage on the site. Each block has a rationale, which is cool. This is a general use instance with very fair moderation rules. I had an alt account on here for about a year with no troubles.

Pleroma/Soykaf

This server is locked to registrations right now. It's run by Lain who is a founding member of the Pleroma project and is currently a major contributor. It makes sense registrations would be locked here as people might flock here as though it were a flagship instance (similar to mastodon social). While Lain maintains this server, he has multiple accounts on other servers so you may not see him here all of the time. This is a general purpose server with relaxed rules. The users here are pretty chill.

Shitposter Club

Shitposter Club is my current (and likely final) home instance. This is where you can find my main account @dielan@shitposter.club. This instance has a deep lore as it was once a GNU Social instance that was established a very long time ago. This lore predates my arrival to the fediverse in 2017 and is only partially covered in Bob's wiki I linked at the top of this post so I will refer you an article written by a longtime SPC user, Robek: What is GNU social and is Mastodon Social a "Twitter Clone"

tl;dr - there were multiple twitter exoduses around 2014 and 2015 that drove people to the fedi, which were a diverse bunch and at odds with the techo-hippie-socialist types that exclusively used GNU Social before their arrival. Rather than freaking out, these kind hippies taught the newcomers how to set up their own instances, so they would not take up space on the existing ones and they could then just block the new instances if desired. SPC is one such server that was established in this era.

Other than that SPC eventually left GNU Social behind and migrated to Pleroma (the only GNU Social server to successfully do this) which has been a big boon for shitposting as we can use modern mobile apps with the site now. SPC is an instance that does not block any other instance (but does try to clean up its TWKN a little bit with some timeline removals) and typically does not moderate the speech of its users. You can say some spicy shit, but to get moderated off the server you have to actually be a shit. This causes the occasional edgeposter to join us and spout some crazy nonsense but they usually get bored with the lack of a response from the fedi and from the admin and leave just as fast as they arrived. This is a very chill server and I strongly recommend it.

GNU/Smug

This is an instance that was also set up during the early twitter exoduses that brought diverse opinions into the fedi. Said exoduses and a brief history of GNU Social can be read here. When compared to Shitposter Club, GNU/Smug is a lot more edgy. The admin frequently edgeposts ironic memes and is not afraid to call out anybody that doesn't like it. Also similar to SPC GNU/Smug switched from GNU Social to Pleroma but they did not do a migration, the admin simply deleted the old GNU Social instance outright. This has caused some former users to become disgruntled and stir up drama, but in general nobody cares. I don't often recommend a new user start out on this instance until they have a chance to observe it from another one, but there are some great users on this instance you don't want to miss out on.

Social Librem One

Don't sign up on this instance. The people running it are openwashing jerks that have forked a bunch of free software and started charging people for it. They didn't disclose what the forks were or where the source code was until enough people dunked on them. They also messed with their instance so you can't see TWKN because they thought that was confusing (which is something Gab intends to do if/when they come to the fedi). They even disabled the reporting feature.

This is an instance with some strange customizations. It appears to have been made to share large audio files. That is just the kind of server this is. This server doesn't work for me in fedilab and I have no idea why.

Do not sign up on this instance. This instance blocks several servers but doesn't publish a list. I'm sure there is a list probably on github somewhere the admin has posted but none of this information is on the sign up form, so you would have to sign up and ask and hope you don't get banned for asking. Most of the users on this server are the type of people who harass and bully other people who they have judged to be undesirable people (if they don't have evidence they'll just make it up) and so they try to claim moral high ground while doing so. They also will not respond to sarcasm or irony and will take any joke you try to make as a statement of your genuine opinion. They block so many instances they will probably never find you, so you don't need to worry about them much.

Single User Instances, and Misskey

I'm not actually going to list single user instances but instead explain what they are. One of the perks of the Pleroma project is that it takes very few resources to run. This makes it ideal for "self hosting" where you are the admin of your own server and also its only user. While you do surrender the public timeline (as it will only contain you) it does give you complete power over your federation. Some people on these kinds of instances are malicious - and as their own admin can create multiple accounts to get through your blocks to harass you. The solution is to just block their instance at your user level, or have your admin do it for the whole instance. Nobody wants to put up with that. Most single user instances are not malicious, so don't worry when you come across one. You just have to judge them case-by-case.

As for Misskey this is an ActivityPub implementation that is written and maintained by non English speakers. This attracts a majority non English speaking audience. The software is really cool and occasionally you'll see English speaking users join these Misskey instances but you should treat them as though they are single user instances as you will likely not see anyone else from those instances. So I won't be listing any instances as their own sections in this blog post.

Fediverse | Wann ist ein Beitrag zu lang?

Wegen Beiträgen wie diesen wurde ich von mehreren Menschen die Mastodon benutzen und davon das sie in ihren Stream recht lange scrollen mussten um durch den Beitrag durchzukommen gefragt ob ich Mastodon Content Warnings nutzen kann. Ja kann ich, aber das sieht dann für andere Friendica User aus. Den selbst wenn ich in die Content Warnung die Überschrift des Beitrags hinein schreibe ist das doch recht unauffällig und nichtssagend.

Deshalb stellt sich für mich die Frage was zu lang ist. Und ob es evtl. eine Möglichkeit gibt mit so etwas wie einen Anriss im Blog zu arbeiten. Den das dürfe sowohl für User von Macroblogging Plattformen als auch für User von Microblogging Plattformen die beste Lösung sein.

Nach der Schlacht um Dien Bien Phu 1954 wird das Land durch das Genfer Abkommen in zwei Teile geteilt. Im Norden setzt sich die von Mao und Stalin unterstützte kommunistische Viet Minh für die Wiedervereinigung ein. Im Süden hingegen stellen sich die USA in der Logik des aufkommenden Kalten Krieges an die Seite des autokratischen Regimes von Präsident Diem. Als dann ab Anfang 1961 Da Le Duan, erster Sekretär der Viet Minh, ein härteres Vorgehen fordert, fühlt sich der Vietcong in den ländlichen Gebieten des Südens zu Guerillaaktionen berufen.

Auf Empfehlung seines Verteidigungsministers Robert McNamara, der sich für einen "begrenzten Krieg" stark macht, schickt US-Präsident Kennedy einige Spezialeinheiten nach Vietnam. Sie sollen an der Seite der südvietnamesischen Armee den Vormarsch des Vietcongs stoppen.

Auf Empfehlung seines Verteidigungsministers Robert McNamara, der sich für einen „begrenzten Krieg“ stark macht, schickt US-Präsident Kennedy einige Spezialeinheiten in den Vietnam. Sie sollen an der Seite der südvietnamesischen Armee den Vormarsch des Vietcongs stoppen. Kennedy genehmigt auch den Einsatz von Napalm und dem Entlaubungsmittel Agent Orange, das ganze Landschaften verwüstet. Während in Washington gewisse Bedenken aufkommen, erkennt Neil Sheehan, ein junger Reporter im Vietnam, dass die Lage wesentlich komplexer ist als erwartet. Ende 1963, kurz vor dem Attentat auf Kennedy, werden Diem und Nhu gestürzt und getötet.

Die Mutter und die Schwester des jungen Denton „Mogie“ Crocker erzählen, was den leidenschaftlichen Jungen dazu bewegte, im Alter von 17 Jahren in den Krieg zu ziehen. Auf der anderen Frontseite schloss sich die damals 16-jährige Le Minh Kue den nordvietnamesischen Streitkräften an, nachdem ihr Dorf durch einen US-Luftangriff zerstört worden war.

Im Juni 1966 stirbt „Mogie“ Crocker im Alter von 19 Jahren im Gefecht. Im Süden führt der Kampf gegen die Guerilla des Vietcongs währenddessen zu gut drei Millionen Flüchtlingen. Im Sommer 1967 weitet sich die Friedensbewegung in den USA aus; in Newark und Detroit kommt es zu Rassenunruhen. Der Marinesoldat John Musgrave berichtet von der Brutalität der Schlacht um Con Thien, aber auch vom Mut und der Solidarität seiner Kameraden. Ende 1967 tritt der von Zweifeln geplagte Verteidigungsminister Robert McNamara zurück.

Am Vorabend des Tet-Festes starten die nordvietnamesischen Truppen und der Vietcong koordinierte Überraschungsangriffe auf große Städte und Militärbasen in ganz Südvietnam. In Saigon richtet der Polizeichef vor laufender Kamera einen standrechtlich verurteilten Agenten des Vietcongs hin. Diese Bilder lassen die öffentliche Meinung kippen.

Am Vorabend des Tet-Festes starten die nordvietnamesischen Truppen und der Vietcong einige koordinierte Überraschungsangriffe auf große Städte und Militärbasen in ganz Südvietnam. Als die Kämpfe in den Straßen von Saigon wüten, richtet der Polizeichef vor laufender Kamera einen standrechtlich verurteilten Agenten des Vietcongs hin. Diese Bilder lassen die öffentliche Meinung kippen. In Hue massakrieren die Angreifer aus dem Norden noch zahlreiche Zivilisten, bevor sie den Rückzug antreten. Insgesamt ist die Tet-Offensive als verlustreichste militärische Niederlage des Nordens zu bewerten, besiegelt jedoch gleichzeitig die moralische Niederlage der USA. Der aus dem Krieg zurückgekehrte Soldat Roger Harris findet sich als Schwarzer in einem Land wieder, das von Rassenunruhen, Widerstandsbewegungen und den Attentaten auf Martin Luther King und Robert Kennedy erschüttert wird.

Auch in Nordvietnam sind es vor allem junge Menschen aus einfachen Verhältnissen, die in den Krieg ziehen, während die Söhne der Mächtigen im Ausland studieren. Der Historiker Huy Duc erinnert sich, wie in der offiziellen Propaganda die Anzahl der Todesopfer heruntergespielt wurde. Als Präsident Johnson Ende 1968 nicht mehr antritt, gewinnt Richard Nixon die Wahl, nachdem er die polizeiliche Niederschlagung der Friedensdemonstration in Chicago genehmigt und Frieden versprochen hatte. In Vietnam werden währenddessen Tausende unschuldige Zivilisten getötet und Zeitzeugen aller drei Seiten verurteilen die Gräueltaten dieses verheerenden Krieges.

Teil 7: Feuermeer (1969 - 1970)

Im Frühjahr 1969 erreicht die Moral der US-Truppen einen Tiefpunkt. Hal Kushner und Nguyen Tai berichten von den grauenvollen Bedingungen als Kriegsgefangene in Nord- und Südvietnam. In den USA schließt sich Carol Crocker, deren Bruder als Soldat in Vietnam kämpft, der immer größer werdenden Friedensbewegung an.

Im Frühjahr 1969 sind von den über 500.000 US-Soldaten in Vietnam rund 40.000 tot. Die Moral der Truppen könnte kaum schlechter sein. Die Kriegsgefangenen Hal Kushner und Nguyen Tai berichten von den grauenvollen Haftbedingungen in Nord- beziehungsweise Südvietnam. Nachdem in den Medien über das von US-Soldaten im März 1968 verübte, grauenvolle Massaker von My Lai berichtet wird, schließt sich Carol Crocker, Schwester des Soldaten „Mogie“, der Friedensbewegung an. Dem Veteran John Musgrave fällt die Heimkehr so schwer, dass er Selbstmordgedanken hat. Präsident Nixon seinerseits beginnt zwar mit dem versprochenen Rückzug, sendet im April 1970 aber trotzdem Truppen nach Kambodscha. Dadurch erlebt die Protestbewegung einen neuen Aufschwung, der durch den tragischen Tod von vier Studenten an der Universität Kent in Ohio noch beflügelt wird.

Teil 8: Respektlose Treue (1970 - 1973)

Nachdem sich die US-Truppen zurückgezogen haben, versuchen die südvietnamesischen Streitkräfte erfolglos, den Ho-Chi-Minh-Pfad in Laos zu unterbrechen. In Hanoi wie in Saigon beklagen Zeitzeugen diesen tragischen Bruderkrieg. Weltweit demonstrieren Menschen gegen die von Nixon angeordneten Luftangriffe; dennoch wird der Präsident Ende 1972 haushoch wiedergewählt.

Nach dem schrittweisen Rückzug der US-Truppen versuchen die auf sich selbst gestellten südvietnamesischen Streitkräfte erfolglos den Ho-Chi-Minh-Pfad in Laos zu unterbrechen. Sie erleiden riesige Verluste, und in Hanoi wie in Saigon beklagen Zeitzeugen diesen ebenso brutalen wie tragischen Bruderkrieg. Der Marinesoldat John Musgrave schließt sich der Bewegung Vietnamveteranen gegen den Krieg (VVAW) an, die in Washington an Einfluss gewinnt. Neil Sheehan veröffentlicht in der „New York Times“ die sogenannten Pentagon-Papiere, einen vertraulichen Bericht über die Hintergründe des Vietnamkriegs, was Präsident Nixon deutlich schwächt. Weltweit demonstrieren Menschen gegen die Luftangriffe, die Nixon als Reaktion auf die nordvietnamesische Offensive im Süden angeordnet hat. Der Fotograf Nick Ut berichtet über die Umstände, unter denen sein weltberühmtes Foto des durch Napalm verbrannten Mädchens entstand. Ende 1972 wird Nixon dank der Unterstützung der „großen schweigenden Mehrheit“ haushoch wiedergewählt.

Teil 9: Was bleibt? (1973 bis heute)

Nach der Unterzeichnung eines Abkommens zwischen Hanoi und Washington verlässt ein Großteil der US-Streitkräfte Vietnam. Währenddessen erschüttert der Watergate-Skandal die USA und Nixon tritt 1974 zurück. Washington leistet kaum noch finanzielle Unterstützung für das verarmte Südvietnam, das sich 1975 schließlich ergeben muss.

Während der Watergate-Skandal die USA erschüttert, verlässt nach der Unterzeichnung eines Abkommens zwischen Hanoi und Washington, das im Gegenzug zum Rückzug der USA die Freilassung amerikanischer Kriegsgefangener vorsieht, ein Großteil der US-Streitkräfte Vietnam. Im August 1974 tritt Nixon zurück und Washington leistet immer weniger finanzielle Unterstützung für das verarmte Südvietnam, das sich den Angriffen des Nordens zu erwehren versucht. There are two ways to add your keys to #FileZilla.

You can add your keys inside the "Site Manager":

Go to:
File -> Site manager ..

Protocol:
In the settings panel for a given site select sFTP:

Add domain IP or domain name:

Logon Type:
Select "Key File"

Add the user name to log onto the server:

Browse for the .ppk you want to add and select it:
FileZilla offers you also to add .pem (privkey.pem) files, that's the #puTTy option for a file containing only the extracted private key of keyfile.ppk. At the same time FileZilla doesn't read/accept .pem files so it will prompt you to transform it into a .ppk file. If your .ppk is protected by a password (it should be), you get prompted to insert the password.
It is not clear if the newly created .ppk file from the .pem file by FileZilla is protected with the same password. It doesn't feel like that.

Save the changes and connect to your server.

The other option to add your key to FileZilla is by adding it directly to the main settings.

Go to:
Edit-> Settings ..

Choose SFTP and select the "Add key file" tab:

Add the key file and save.
If you use the input fields and quick connect options of the main FileZilla window, the keys saved in settings will be retrieved.

Hi,
I'm working on my first #friendica #VPS installation, here you'll find my initial post about general thoughts like what distro to use, size and costs.
I'm using the tutorial "creating a friendica server - ubuntu" by @Hank G ☑️.

As of now I'm doing well in the process and want to start this post to document differences and questions while installing the server.

This server is going to host an already existing friendica node I have to move from another hosting provider. That means that for example the DB doesn't have to be created from scratch but moved and other smaller details.

I will try to address the different steps of installation in answers to this post and appreciate help, ideas and observations.

I'm doing this from a #linux desktop environment from the console but there shouldn't be differences if you want to do this from a #windows machine.

what VPS offer fits best for a small friendica instance?

Hi there,
in the end I want to try to setup my first own hosted friendica VPS on a small setup:
1gig RAM/1 Core/25gig

The idea is kinda single user instance with a few forum pages.

The hosting provider has the following options:

• debian bullsey - vpn server
• debian bookworm - wireguard server
• debian bookworm - bookworm 2023-07-03
• debian bookworm - bookworm 2023-07-03 LEMP (nginx+php8.2+mariaDB10.5)
• debian bookworm - nextcloud
• ubuntu 22.04.01LTS
• CENTOS8.1 - 2020-05-03
• cleanVPS to upload own ISO

I'm used to debian/devuan on PC, so am obviously inclined to go for debian but have no idea what version would be the best choice.

In the first place the debian LEMP option looks like the way to go.
Latest experience with a new friendica installation seemed to be in need of PHP8.1 instead of PHP8.2.
Is it difficult to downgrade that?

Also, I'm kinda worried about security in general, even tho the data exposed will only be my own, so there is no responsibility with others.
Are there more security risks than on a shared hosting with let's say a standard phpBB forum page?

The idea would be to point the IP from my existing hosting provider to the VPS.

• Do we have some general "how to setup" for a VPS setting from scratch?
• Anyone interested in creating such a "how to" in a conversation with me here to have a refence or base to sum that up for the frindica wiki?
• Could it even be of interest to create a "friendica VPS-ISO installation" with the help of git.friendi.ca for example?

In the heart of the city, where humans hurried past ancient trees, and the scent of coffee mingled with the scent of blooming flowers, I, Eury, a solitary dryad, felt like a relic of a forgotten era. My existence was a quiet one, my days spent observing the ebb and flow of urban life from the shelter of the ancient oak in the park. The world of smartphones, social media, and the constant chatter of digital connections felt alien to me, a distant realm I couldn't fathom. Yet, beneath my tranquil surface, anxiety gnawed at my core. Climate change had taken its toll on me, draining my energy with relentless attacks that left me feeling lost and powerless. In my family, they told stories about the weird fungi-people who said to plan radical attacks to stop climate change. It were dark times. ⠀ One day, as I wandered through the park, my eyes caught a glimpse of a peculiar-looking mushroom, its cap adorned with vibrant colors that seemed to pulse with an otherworldly light. Without much thought, I picked the mushroom and, driven by a strange impulse, consumed it. In that moment, my senses were catapulted into the Fungiverse, a realm where big mycels communicated with each other, forming intricate networks of interconnected life. In the Fungiverse, time seemed to lose its meaning. Days turned into nights as I ventured deeper, encountering the biggest mycels, which stood in constant communication with one another. And even though their ideologies clashed like thunder in the distance, mirroring the conflicts of the upper world; yet, here in the Fungiverse, battles were fought not with weapons but with spores and symbiotic relationships. It was a truly magical place, one that I had never encountered in the digital world that was created by the humans. Through my new found magical connection, I realized that many people in my city were also linked to the Fungiverse, forming communities that fought against climate change in innovative ways. Inspired, I joined one of these communities and, in the process, found love in the arms of Lamella, a fungi-woman whose heart pulsed with the same passion as mine even so we belonged to different myzels. Our love blossomed amidst the mycelial threads that wove us together. In the quiet intimacy of our moments, we explored the unique practices of our kind – the gentle exchange of nutrients and the harmonious dance between plants and mushroom-people. It was a profound connection, one that transcended the boundaries of our physical forms. Yet, amidst our bliss, darkness loomed. Horrible things began happening to members of the Fungiverse communities. People fell ill, their bodies ravaged by a mysterious force, their mouths expelling black oil like a grotesque manifestation of the world's pollution. Fear and uncertainty spread like wildfire, and within the Fungiverse, conflicts arose. The myzels, once harmonious networks of communication, now trembled with discord. The TerraForce Mycelium believed in radical, immediate actions to counter climate change, advocating for a swift transformation of the upper world, while in contrast, the GreenTech Mycelium argued for a more cautious approach, fearing that hasty actions might destabilize the delicate balance of their ecosystem. Caught between these conflicting ideologies, Lamella and I became determined to bridge the gap. We embarked on a perilous journey, traversing the vast expanse of the Fungiverse to bring the myzels together. Along the way, we faced countless challenges, battling fierce spore storms and navigating treacherous fungal terrains. In the heart of the Fungiverse, where the myzels converged, we made our stand. With unwavering determination, we pleaded for unity, for an alliance that would preserve the essence of our interconnected world. Through the strength of our love and the power of our conviction, we managed to quell the discord. As the myzels merged and harmonized, a surge of energy pulsed through the Fungiverse. The unity of purpose, the shared vision of a healthier world, resonated through every mycelial thread. Together, we vowed to continue our fight against climate change, not as separate entities but as one collective consciousness. ⠀ Back in the upper world, the change was palpable. Ich schreibe einen Artikel über den #FediverseFachtag und in dem Rahmen natürlich auch über das #Fediverse . Zielgruppe sind Leute, die wahrscheinlich zum Großteil noch gar nix vom Fediverse gehört haben.
Dazu bin ich dabei, eine Tabelle zu erstellen, in der einige Fedi-Dienste sowie deren Haupt-/ besondere Funktionen aufgeführt werden sollen.

Das ist der derzeitige Entwurf:

Ein Vergleich mit kommerziellen Plattformen ist natürlich immer nur zum Teil passend. Ich kenne auch keinen der kommerziellen Dienste aus eigener Erfahrung, aber für die avisierte Zielgruppe kann so ein Vergleich vielleicht trotzdem eine hilfreiche Orientierung sein. Vielleicht gibt es da aber auch Vergleiche, die passender sind. Einige Dienste (bspw. Medium, Podigee) kannte ich auch noch nicht mal vom Namen her, sondern habe das nur aus ähnlichen Vergleichstabellen übernommen.

Zu den "besonderen Funktionen":
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a. Hubzilla haben so viele Funktionen, dass diese im Rahmen der Tabelle nur exemplarisch aufgeführt werden können und die Auswahl ist subjektiv. Hier wäre die Frage, ob das eine passende Auswahl ist, ob besonders wichtige fehlen oder ob andere Funktionen wichtiger oder besonderer sind.

Bluesky, the decentralized Twitter spin-off championed by Jack Dorsey, continues to surge in users as the team inches toward federation.

Bluesky Continues Rapid Growth, Reaches Federation Milestone

From September 2023 onward, we’ve seen a significant period of growth and expansion for Bluesky and the ATproto network, in a variety of ways. On September 12, the network hit a milestone of one million registered accounts on the service. Bluesky has managed to grow consistently since it started in January of this year. In the past month, growth has averaged a little over 1% every day.

User Growth Over Time

As with all other microblogging platforms, Bluesky sees a significant influx every time something happens at X. Mid September Bluesky hit a new record of over 50k new accounts in a single day, after news came out that Elon Musk floated the idea of charging everyone to use X. This amounts to roughly three times the average daily signups.

Measuring account growth for Bluesky’s network over time reflects how consistent the growth really is. Sure, there’s fluctuations, but the size of the network consistently grows by about 1% on a daily basis. The larger the network is, the bigger that number is in absolute terms: After Bluesky reached 1 million accounts, the network added another 400,000 users over the following four weeks.

Beyond user statistics, several large US media outlets on Bluesky have now used their domain names for account validation. In Bluesky’s world, accounts can set their handles to domain names to establish identity, provided that the account holder also owns the domain. The New York Times, the Washington Post and Bloomberg are all examples of Bluesky accounts who have recently done this. Another notable organization is the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who received international media attention for a public argument with Elon Musk on X, prior to migrating to Bluesky.

Dealing with Growth

The other side of the coin is that Bluesky’s current infrastructure is starting to hit its limits. Over the next few months they will be working on upgrading their back-end to a new version (dubbed simply v2), that can handle over 10 million accounts. Bluesky engineer Jake Gold recently announced a major milestone in work on v2, which is also a major milestone on the work towards federation.

This post is traversing PDS -> BGS -> AppView instead of the old path PDS -> AppView…This took significant work…[and is a] big milestone in the v2 scaling effort because it enables multiple Bluesky PDS instances!

As there now seems to be momentum in the move towards Bluesky, Gold mentioned that they want to speed up the current growth by 10x ‘ASAP’. One of the ways they want to accomplish this from a technical perspective is by slowly starting the federation process, but limit it to other servers (PDS) that are also run by Bluesky.

The Bluesky team also provided an update on federation support. With the latest update, the entire system is now working to the team’s design plans. Federation is now possible, but not yet enabled. The team reiterated that the network could technically start federation right now, but that they intend to finish implementation details and security work. The team expects a basic version of federation to be available in the coming weeks, but initially will only allow federation with other servers (PDS) run by Bluesky.

Treading Water

Bluesky has been criticised for its casual approach to Trust & Safety. One concern is that the team has yet to appoint an official role to someone to fill that purpose. Speeding up network growth by a factor of 10 without addressing this seems risky. A startup building a network from scratch has a golden opportunity to start from first principles – Trust & Safety is a big one.

This thread provides a good example of how the shared understanding of the space is currently muddled. There don’t seem to be clear answers to how the network should deal with a server (PDS) that either contains bad actors, sock puppet accounts conducting astroturf campaigns, or other attempts to influence algorithmic feeds.

There are hard questions that deserve careful deliberation. And that careful deliberation seems hard to square with the team’s goal of expanding growth by 10x ASAP.
