There are many amazing talks about Blender being pubished due to Blender Conference.

However, you don't need to use Youtube to watch them! They're also being published on their PeerTube instance, @blender !

And yes, since PeerTube uses ActivityPub, you can browse, like and share, and even subscribe with your mastodon (or any other federated software) account!

@davidrevoy yes, it's a bit unfortunate, hopefully in the future the instance might be able to use the new features of #peertube which allow off-loading some of the encoding to other machines.

I really hope that the #blender community will begin to embrace these alternatives, as we do with #Linux, the #Fediverse for example. Currently, it is not perfect, but unless we support them, they will never be mature.

Come to think of it, Blender is the post child for this mindset😀

If anyone else has noticed the delay of videos being posted from #bcon23 on the official #peertube instance, not to worry, they are still encoding, but unfortunately not being published as quickly as hoped.

Can I ask a favour?

There has been much interest in #PeerTube, the Fediverse's video platform. It's really cool and its accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc.

However, PeerTubers sometimes don't get followers and views, and they need followers for their videos to be noticed/searchable by the Fediverse's federation system, so it's catch-22.

This cycle would be broken if more people followed PeerTubers, so here's a thread of some active accounts to follow! (And feel free to share!)

This is the latest #youtube "innovation". #Google with a market cap of $1.7 trillion and $120 billion cash on hand, "needs" to charge for ads on YouTube.

This is, of course, not true. They have more than enough revenue to run YouTube without ads in perpetuity, but they want to please shareholders. The #Peertube community is showing how you can distribute the costs of hosting content as well. If you don't support Google's continued monetization of monopolized video...vote with your feet.

If you're uploading to #PeerTube, it's important to include tags, because these will make it a lot easier for people to notice your video.

PeerTube tags automatically appear as hashtags on Mastodon, so people searching or following those hashtags will see your video 👍

If you use more than one word in a tag, it will automatically be converted into a single phrase.

(PT tags have always worked as hashtags on Mastodon, but starting in Masto 4.2.0 the tags are actually visible below the video.)

If you're publishing on #PeerTube, bear in mind most of your potential followers are on Mastodon, and Mastodon will show your videos as made by your PeerTube account, not your channels.

To avoid confusion, you might want to brand your account and channel identically. If you need to have several different PeerTube channels, consider using several PeerTube accounts instead.

The username on videos viewed from Mastodon will be your PeerTube account. Channels look like groups boosting your account.

As YouTube seems to be going increasingly ad-heavy, have had many requests to do posts about how to get into #PeerTube.

PeerTube is an ad-free video platform on the Fediverse. You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc. When a PeerTube account posts a video, it will appear in your Mastodon timeline just like any post, and you can like, share, reply etc.
