In the heart of Lyon, France, adorning the façade of a building, stands the magnificent Wall of the Silk Weavers (La Fresque des Canuts)
This enormous mural, painted in the trompe-lâoeil style, mesmerizes viewers with its hyperrealistic imagery and intricate details, offering a captivating glimpse into the everyday life of the La Croix-Rousse neighborhood.
Created by the talented group of mural painters known as CitĂ©CrĂ©ation, the mural first came to life in 1987 as a tribute to the neighborhoodâs rich history. La Croix-Rousse once served as the bustling center of Lyonâs silk industry during the 19th century, earning it the nickname âthe hill that works.â The mural, known as âLe Mur des Canuts,â pays homage to the silk weavers who resided and toiled in this vibrant community.
The mural captures the essence of the neighborhoodâs past, featuring colorful buildings, pastel-hued high windows, a stone stairway, a charming Guignol theater, and, of course, a silk shop. Every detail is meticulously crafted to create a three-dimensional effect, seamlessly blending art with the architectural heritage of Lyon.
La Croix-Rousseâs silk industry may have diminished over time, but the mural stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the silk workers who once rebelled against their oppressive working conditions in 1831. Their courageous spirit continues to echo through the vibrant streets of La Croix-Rousse.
Throughout the years, the mural has undergone two updates, in 1997 and 2013, reflecting the evolving landscape and spirit of the neighborhood. Today, it remains one of Europeâs largest displays of public art, drawing visitors from far and wide to admire its grandeur and immerse themselves in Lyonâs rich cultural heritage.
As you wander the streets of Lyon, be sure to seek out this awe-inspiring mural, marvel at its trompe-lâoeil mastery, and become enthralled by the story it tells. The Wall of the Silk Weavers is not just a painting; it is a living testament to the history, artistry, and indomitable spirit of La Croix-Rousse.

Mon Devaneâs Stunning Picasso-Inspired Mural: Unveiling âNiña con barco, Leiveâ in MĂĄlaga

Mon Devane, a prominent Spanish street artist, recently transformed a building facade in El Boquetillo, Fuengirola, MĂĄlaga, into a vibrant mural that pays homage to both Picasso and his own daughter, Leive.
The mural, titled âNiña con barcoâ or âGirl with Boat,â holds a special place in Devaneâs heart, and it signifies the beginning of a new era for the neighborhood.
Devane was the first artist invited by the Fuengirola City Council to create an artwork for the neighborhood. His work marks the start of a project aimed at turning the area into a public urban art museum. And what better way to kickstart this initiative than with a mural that beautifully merges personal inspiration and cultural reverence!
In a comment about his work, Devane shared that he was asked to create a nautical-themed mural. For inspiration, he turned to the works of Malagaâs own Pablo Picasso, specifically Picassoâs piece âNiña con barco (Maya),â which portrays Picassoâs daughter playing with an orange boat. After finding this artwork, Devane decided to create his personal interpretation of it, embedding his unique style into the composition.
The result is a captivating mural that pays homage to Picasso while also showcasing Devaneâs distinctive artistic approach. The model for this important piece was none other than Devaneâs own daughter, Leive, making the mural not only an artistic masterpiece but also a personal tribute.
The âNiña con barco, Leiveâ is more than just a mural; itâs a testament to the transformative power of street art, a tribute to one of the greatest artists of all time, and a heartfelt expression of a fatherâs love for his daughter.
Follow Mon Devaneâs artistic journey on his Instagram and stay tuned for more vibrant murals transforming the streets of Spain and beyond.

7. Elderly Kiss â Duek & Fresa Bogota in TlĂĄhuac, Mexico
A mural of an elderly couple sharing an affectionate kiss, painted directly on the facade of a bright blue house. Every wrinkle, detail, and emotion is rendered with care and warmth.
đĄ Nerd Fact: This is also a cross-border collaboration: Fresa identifies herself as a Colombian street artist, while Duek has described other murals of his as reflections on migration, protection, and family. That wider context makes tenderness feel like part of the message, not just the mood.

A portrait of a woman in a cream-colored cloche hat, painted between two buildings in a narrow courtyard. The mural is monochromatic with soft yellow accents wrapping the figure, and perfectly integrates with the old brick textures. More!: 9 MartĂn Ron Murals That Redefine Urban Art
đĄ Nerd Fact: San Telmo is one of Buenos Airesâ oldest and most nostalgia-heavy neighborhoods â famous for antiques, colonial streets, markets, and tango heritage â so a portrait that feels lifted from early cinema is doing more than decorating a wall; itâs echoing the barrioâs whole personality.

12. La Guinguette â Patrick Commecy in Brives-Charensac, France
Patrick Commecyâs La Guinguette transforms a narrow building façade into a charming cafĂ© scene. The painted storefront glows in blue and gold, with a man reading a newspaper at a checkered table, a bartender behind the counter, and a woman leaning from a balcony above. Every detail â from bottles and signs to the flowered window boxes â deepens the illusion of a lively local moment frozen in paint.
Patrick Commecy: The era of Saturday night dances, fried food accompanied by the local âVerveine Authentique,â and a nod to Joseph Servant, founder of the Twinning Committee in 1987.
đĄ Nerd Fact: Commecyâs team says each mural begins almost like an investigation into a placeâs urban, historical, and social identity. That matters here, because a guinguette is traditionally a festive cafĂ© where people eat, drink, and dance â and this specific wall revives Brives-Charensac memories of Saturday-night dances, local âVerveine Authentique,â and Joseph Servant.

Painted for the Vancouver Mural Festival, this surreal piece shows a giant octopus grappling with a plastic bottle drifting through the ocean. Inside the bottle, a sailing ship is trappedâblurring the line between myth and environmental warning. The vibrant blues and dynamic composition stretch across the buildingâs surface, blending underwater perspective with striking realism.

Sculptures That Blend With Nature (10 Photos)
Public art can make a plain place worth stopping for.
These sculptures use grass, trees, water, sand, and open space as part of the work. Here are 10 sculptures from around the world: a giant clothespin pinching the ground, a zipper opening a lawn, and a bench waiting in a slingshot. Small everyday ideas, made very large.

đȘ” Skin 2 â By Mehmet Ali Uysal, originally in Chaudfontaine Park, Belgium đ§đȘ
Made for Parc Hauster in Chaudfontaine, near LiĂšge, Belgium, Skin 2 looks like a wooden clothespin pinching the ground. Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Uysal turned a clothespin into a sculpture so large that the lawn becomes part of the work.đĄ Nerd Fact: The original Chaudfontaine installation is no longer a regular park stop: Atlas Obscura now marks the site as permanently closed and notes that the sculpture was no longer in the park in its April 2022 update. The work still appears in gallery records: Pi Artworks lists Skin 2 as a 2010 sculpture measuring 700 Ă 800 cm, courtesy of the municipality of LiĂšge.
đ€Č HAND and PARK TREE (The Caring Hand) â By Eva Oertli and Beat Huber in Glarus, Switzerland đšđ
In the Volksgarten in Glarus, Switzerland, the work known as The Caring Hand rises around a living tree. Beat Huber documents the installation as HAND and PARK TREE, realized with Eva Oertli. The oversized concrete fingers make the tree look held and protected.đĄ Nerd Fact: Beat Huber says the idea began in 1990 as an art-in-architecture proposal for a new agricultural school, but it was shelved because there was not enough space or money. When it was finally made for Skulptura 04 in 2004, it was planned to last only four months. Public pressure changed that: private donors raised CHF 43,700, and Glarus received the hand as a gift from the public.

đž Shuttlecocks â By Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in Kansas City, Missouri, USA đșđž
In the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, giant badminton birdies sit in the grass. The work, called Shuttlecocks, was created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It looks like a huge game stopped mid-rally and nobody came back to clean it up. The museum lists each shuttlecock as nearly 18 feet tall, about 16 feet across, and 5,500 pounds.đĄ Nerd Fact: Oldenburg and van Bruggenâs idea was architectural, not just oversized. The Nelson-Atkins says they imagined the museum building as the badminton net and the lawn as the playing field, then placed four shuttlecocks as if a rally had frozen on both sides of the ânet.â
đȘ Window with Ladder â Too Late for Help â By Leandro Erlich in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA đșđž
Leandro Erlichâs Window with Ladder â Too Late for Help shows a white ladder leading to a brick wall with an open window. The wall appears to float above the field with no house attached. The work is now in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art.đĄ Nerd Fact: NOMA lists the workâs hidden support system as a steel underground structure, but the context is more serious than the engineering. It was first installed in 2008 in a vacant lot in New Orleansâ Lower Ninth Ward for Prospect.1, in an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
đł Give â By Lorenzo Quinn, now in Pietrasanta, Italy đźđč
Give by Italian artist Lorenzo Quinn shows two giant hands holding an tree. The hands sit low in the grass, making the tree look newly planted and protected.đĄ Nerd Fact: Halcyon Gallery described Give (this time a olive tree) as a gift from Quinn and Halcyon Gallery to Pietrasanta, first unveiled in Florenceâs Uffizi Gardens in 2020. Quinnâs biography says it later stood outside Palermo Cathedral before being permanently installed in Pietrasantaâs International Park of Contemporary Sculpture.

đ Schleudersitz â By Cornelia Konrads, made for Neustadt an der Donau, Germany đ©đȘ
German artist Cornelia Konrads built Schleudersitz with a wooden bench, rubber, steel cable, and the trees on site. It looks ready to launch across the grass. Sitting there might feel like trusting the artist a little too much.đĄ Nerd Fact: The German title Schleudersitz means âejection seat,â and the location made the joke sharper. Sculpture Network records the 2010 work as part of the Flying Objects exhibition on a former vineyard, now a leisure park, overlooking the Danube Valley.
𧷠Corridor Pin, Blue â By Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in San Francisco, USA đșđž
In the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, Corridor Pin, Blue stands over the garden like a sewing tool left in the wrong scale. Created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the blue base and long silver pin make it hard to miss.đĄ Nerd Fact: This giant safety pin is not alone. NOMAâs collection lists another Corridor Pin, Blue as edition 3/3, while the Nasher Museum identifies an artistâs proof with the same 255 Ă 256 Ă 16 inch dimensions. The âtinyâ domestic object has siblings in more than one city.
đ€ Zip â By Mark Richard Hall in the Hamptons, New York, USA đșđž
This grass-and-water zipper is best identified as Zip, a private Hamptons commission by British sculptor Mark Richard Hall. The oversized metal zipper opens the lawn into a narrow water feature, making the garden look unzipped.đĄ Nerd Fact: This image is an easy caption trap. It often circulates online as a Yasuhiro Suzuki sculpture in Tokyo, but stronger sources point to Hall. Mark Richard Hallâs own studio lists a commission called Zip in the Hamptons, and Architectural Digest identifies a stainless-steel zipper sculpture by Hall embedded in the grass at a Southampton home. Suzukiâs verified zipper work is the boat-based Zip-Fastener Ship, which uses a wake to âunzipâ water.
đž Hallow â By Daniel Popper, formerly at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois, USA đșđž
Daniel Popperâs Hallow is a monumental figure of a woman opening her chest. The hollow space inside is framed by hands, carved hair, and trees in bloom around the work. It was installed near Meadow Lake at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois.đĄ Nerd Fact: Hallow belonged to Popperâs Human+Nature exhibition, which the Morton Arboretum described as his first major U.S. exhibition and largest anywhere at the time. The Arboretum now notes that the exhibition has concluded, but Popperâs own text for the work connects Hallow to grief, self-expression, growth, and healing rather than a simple ânature goddessâ reading.

đ Augere â By Jon Foreman, created at Druidston, Wales, UK đŹđ§
Jon Foreman arranged natural stones in tight circles on the sand at Druidston, Wales. In a 2025 post, Foreman identified the work as Augere. The piece changes as the tide moves in. More: Amazing Sculptures by Jon Foreman! (12 Photos)đĄ Nerd Fact: Foremanâs land art is not built to survive the coast. In an interview, he says the tide washes a work back to the tide line and he returns the next day to âan empty canvasâ. So with pieces like Augere, disappearance is not a failure. It is part of the schedule.

A flat wall is just a flat wall, until an artist decides to play a trick on your eyes. Suddenly, a solid brick corner turns into a massive tiger ready to pounce. A plain pavement opens up into a glowing pit.
Across cities from Patras to Mons, creators are bending perspective and turning everyday architecture into giant optical illusions. You walk past what you think is a normal building, only to realize a T-Rex is crashing through the plaster. These arenât just paintings. They are structural magic tricks. Here are 10 times artists proved that even concrete can lie.

1. The White Rabbit Escapes â WD (Wild Drawing) in Patras, Greece
A woman in a red dress sits calmly on a giant spotted mushroom. Right above her, the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland scrambles up the architecture, clutching his famous pocket watch. Swirling gold frames the scene, tricking the eye into believing the wall is actually a deep portal into a fantasy world. WD (Wild Drawing) painted this using the buildingâs natural shape to make the rabbit look like he is physically climbing out of the frame.

He painted the fake black bricks to frame the dinosaur, making the head and tail look like they are physically extending out into the street. He even fought through wind and rain to get this giant reptile finished.

So, buckle up and letâs dive into the intriguing world of 3D street art!Itâs all about perspective! The Art of Anamorphosis:
Creating Illusions Anamorphosis, the technique behind 3D street art, involves creating distorted images that only appear in their correct proportions when viewed from a specific angle or through a reflective device. This mind-blowing technique has been around since the Renaissance, but it wasnât until the late 20th century that artists began applying it to the streets, transforming ordinary pavements into magical wonderlands.1

We canât talk about 3D street art without mentioning its pioneers, Kurt Wenner and Julian Beever. Both artists started creating anamorphic illusions on the streets of Europe in the 1980s, revolutionizing the street art scene. Their innovative works have inspired a new generation of artists to experiment with perspective and create their own jaw-dropping 3D masterpieces.3

The Process: From Sketch to Lifelike Artwork
Creating 3D street art is a labor-intensive process that begins with a detailed sketch of the desired illusion. Artists then use mathematical calculations and perspective techniques to determine the correct proportions for the final piece. Once the groundwork is done, they meticulously apply chalk or paint to the pavement, using shading and highlights to bring the illusion to life.5

17 Times Nikita Nomerz Brought Walls to Life
Content warning: Street Art by Street Artist Nikita Nomerz from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
Nikita Nomerz transforms abandoned structures into living, expressive faces, blending street art with the natural decay of urban landscapes.
His murals breathe new life into crumbling buildings, bridges, and water towers across Russia, turning them into characters full of personality and depth. By working with the contours and textures of these forgotten spaces, Nomerz creates a unique dialogue between art and architecture.
The Living Wall
In 2010, on the banks of the Oka River in Nizhny Novgorod, the Living Walls project began with the first street art piece, Big Brother. This marked the start of a series of works aimed at giving a second life to abandoned buildings. Each piece interacts with its environment, turning architectural elementsâwindows, cracks, and texturesâinto expressive faces and characters.
Street art and traditional studio painting evoke entirely different emotions. Creating art in public spaces sparks a dialogue with passersby, architecture, and nature, making the work feel truly alive. While street art may be temporary, it develops its own unique life, shaped by time and its surroundings.

Three large, rounded concrete blocks are brought to life with highly expressive facesâone smiling, one baring its teeth in frustration, and another with a discontented expression. Placed in front of an industrial backdrop, the contrast between the decayed setting and the humorous expressions adds to the surreal nature of the piece.
3.
The Crumbling Smile
A cracked yellow wall is transformed into a grinning face, with the deteriorating bricks and stones serving as jagged teeth. The artwork highlights the natural decay of the structure, giving it a distinct personality that blends seamlessly with its surroundings.
4.
The Watchtower Elder
A tall, cylindrical water tower is transformed into the face of an old man with a long white beard, blending seamlessly with the buildingâs structure. The expressive eyes and textured details make the tower feel like a wise figure standing guard over the landscape.
5.
Eyes in the Snow
Two massive, painted eyes on wooden barrels emerge from the snow, staring out at the city street. The winter setting enhances the eerie effect, making it seem as if the city itself is watching.
6.
The Screaming Tank
A rusting industrial tank is turned into a face with an exaggerated open mouth, creating the illusion of a loud scream. The work plays with the shape of the tank to enhance its emotional impact, appearing almost alive amid the urban surroundings.
7.
The Wall with Glowing Eyes
A brick wall is transformed into a solemn face, with two glowing windows as eyes piercing through the darkness. This nighttime shot captures the haunting atmosphere, where the artwork interacts with the artificial light, making it feel almost supernatural.
8.
The Prisoner
An abandoned building becomes a striking illusion of a man gripping iron bars, as if trying to break free from confinement. The black-and-white vertical lines reinforce the idea of imprisonment, turning the deteriorating structure into a powerful statement about captivity and escape.
9.
The Watchful Tower
A tall industrial tower is painted with an elongated face wrapped in intricate patterns, creating a surreal and timeless expression. The blending of natural curves with the structure gives it an ethereal, almost guardian-like presence in the sky.
10.
The Giant Baby Face
Inside an abandoned building, Nomerz paints a massive, unsettlingly realistic babyâs face on a crumbling wall. The contrast between the youthful expression and the decay of the structure makes this piece particularly haunting.
11.
The Screaming Bunker
An old concrete bunker is turned into a monster-like face with an open mouth serving as the entrance. Jagged white stones inside resemble teeth, making it appear as if the bunker is about to swallow visitors whole.
12.
The Firm Grip
Two large industrial domes feature murals of individual hands gripping onto bars. The artwork gives the illusion that someone inside is holding onto the structureâs entrance, as if trapped or refusing to let go.
13.
The Bridge With Teeth
A stone bridge is transformed into a wide-mouthed face with painted eyes on either side. The long row of teeth under the archway makes it feel like the river flows straight through its grin.
14.
The Haunted Chapel
An old brick chapel is given a haunting face with eyes painted onto the windows and a mouth made from the buildingâs doorway, complete with jagged stone âteeth.â The worn-down state of the structure amplifies the eerie effect.
15.
The Blessing
A tall building is painted with a robed figure, its hands folded in a meditative pose. The structureâs unique triangular rooftop serves as a natural âhatâ for the figure, seamlessly integrating architecture with the muralâs design.
16.
The Hidden Prisoner
A mural of a man peeking through a crack in a doorway is painted onto a small structure, blending seamlessly with the buildingâs architecture. The gripping hands and intense gaze add a sense of mystery, making it feel as if someone is trapped inside, watching the outside world.
17.
The Three Warriors
Three large domed buildings are transformed into the faces of bearded men wearing medieval-style helmets. The dark brick and metallic dome tops create the illusion of battle-worn warriors.

KTHR: Hereâs one of my paintings of Festival EFĂMURS which I paid tribute to the sacred patron of the fishermen. Itâs been an honor for me to represent this character in one of the main buildings in town. Here in LâAmetlla de Mar, Saint Peter is celebrated every year and even though the new generations arenât very religious the tradition and the believing of this entity is still important for all the fishermen. Represented with his characteristic white beard, his two keys and the popeâs ring also known as the fishermen ring. Wearing the actual yellow suit for fishermen and with the small detail of the fishing moment painted bellow this is how I pictured Saint Peter and hope everyone likes it as much as I enjoyed painting it for my hometown.

Iâve always been drawn to SMUGâs artâthereâs just something amazing about how he brings everyday faces to life on such a massive scale.
Known worldwide for his super-realistic portraits, SMUGâs murals are incredibly detailed and often tower up to 14 stories high! His work isnât just impressive; itâs a mix of creativity and skill, with each piece telling its own story through light, shadow, and careful detail. When SMUG starts a mural, heâs not just copying a photo; heâs adapting to the wall in front of him. Every wall, with its own texture and quirks, becomes part of the artwork. Seeing him turn these challenges into part of the art is what makes his work so incredible.

âGarden Swallowâ in Ronda, Andalucia. Spain.
FabiĂĄn Bravo Guerrero about the mural: The âGarden Swallowâ mural is a beautiful work of art that conveys a very profound message about the connection between nature and humans. In the mural, a child surrounded by pots of flowers holds a swallow in his hand, and both look at each other with deep tenderness.
The image of the mural represents the harmony that exists between human beings and nature, in this case, between the child and the swallow. The presence of the swallow in the childâs garden also conveys a message about the importance of these animals in controlling mosquito and other insect pests, and the need to protect their nests and habitat.
In addition, the mural also reflects the symbolism that swallows have in popular culture, especially in Andalusian patios, where they are considered a symbol of eternal love and respect for the couple. The image of the child with the swallow transmits a message of love and respect towards nature and the living beings that inhabit it.
âRaicesâ in Algeciras, Spain for AsociaciĂłn RecreArte.
FabiĂĄn Bravo Guerrero about the mural: In this beautiful mural titled âRaĂcesâ, the eternal legacy of Andalusian flamenco that transcends generations is represented. In the center of the composition, a girl with a deep look and full of passion, hugs her guitar with devotion and dedication. Her fingers, Like dancing petals, they caress the strings, releasing melodies impregnated with sentiment and ancestral experience.
Around her, exquisitely displayed pink flowers intertwine with the air, symbolizing the beauty and delicacy of flamenco. These flowers, as symbols of the Andalusian land, are a tribute to the flamenco artists born in Algeciras, who, with their talent and passion, have left an indelible mark on the art world.
The âRaĂcesâ mural captures the very essence of flamenco, that magical connection that is transmitted from generation to generation, like an ancestral whisper that resonates in every chord and every beat. It is a tribute to the strength and power of music, capable of moving us and transporting us to deep places of the soul, reminding us of our roots and our cultural identity.
May this work endure over time as a living symbol of the greatness and passion of Andalusian flamenco, and as a tribute to those artists who have left an indelible legacy in Algeciras and in the world of flamenco art.
âSwallowsâ in Casablanca, Morocco for Casamouja.
FabiĂĄn Bravo Guerrero about the mural: Swallows represent respect, love and fidelity, they are migratory birds, which usually migrate to Africa, thatâs why I chose to paint them here in Casablanca, the almond flowers, makes the swallows stand out more.
I decided to paint the background with Arab tiles, and turquoise, white and reddish colorâs, in tribute to the âHassan II Mosqueâ (the second largest in the world) that was near the mural.
âFragile Balanceâ in Estepona, Spain.
FabiĂĄn Bravo Guerrero about the mural: According to data from the Specialized System for Reporting Cases of School Violence (Siseve) from the Ministry of Education, a total of 20,604 bullying reports were recorded nationwide between 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 alone.
This is what the mural is about.
In it, we see a teenage girl climbing a staircase toward the moon, which shines brightly and illuminates the entire scene.
The moon represents everything the girl has dreamed of.
She wants to reach itâlike we all doâbut sheâs carrying a heavy backpack: filled with insults, rejection, fear, lonelinessâŠ
And how will her story end?
On one hand, the girl might reach her goals thanks to the help she receives after her bullying case becomes known.
On the other hand, she might not make it. The weight of her backpack is so heavy that it throws off her balance, and she canât reach her destination.
With this, I aim to reflect the internal struggle faced by those experiencing bullying, highlighting the importance of offering supportâbefore the weight becomes too much to bear.

HERA about Wild Child: Choosing a stray cat as the hero of a piece of public art is my way of attempting a balance between the existing monuments of some pompous monarchs or war generals and the real inhabitants of a place. I want the little ones, the real ones, the actual souls of the streets to be recognized. I want to pay homage to the ones who surely have fought through their fair share of struggles, and have their scars to prove it, but chose to for the most days just quietly exists, mind their business and remind us to enjoy even the uneventful days.

HERA: Because I work when I freestyle i came to the wall without a sketch and spend my time listening to what locals said about Karlstad. Every detail of this artwork was inspired by some info I came across at the spot, but also its overall theme about hospitality.
The words on the upper left side read âSola i Karlstadâ which was the nickname of one particularly friendly tavern waitress and innkeeper in the city back in the 18th century; Eva Lisa Holtz. I think itâs absolutely amazing that the city even has a statue for her. How many cities in the world can say that they consider a sunny disposition and kindness as monument-worthy traits? I just love that!
So, that and the fact that being a good host is a ton of effort, I felt like I should dedicate this mural art to everyone who uses their time on earth to nurture others. And to unite others, no matter how far apart they usually sit.

Get ready to be mesmerized by the fascinating world of 3D street art!
In todayâs blog post, weâll delve into the mind-bending realm of anamorphic masterpieces, as we explore how these optical illusions are created and what makes them so captivating. So, buckle up and letâs dive into the intriguing world of 3D street art!
Itâs all about perspective! The Art of Anamorphosis:
Creating Illusions Anamorphosis, the technique behind 3D street art, involves creating distorted images that only appear in their correct proportions when viewed from a specific angle or through a reflective device. This mind-blowing technique has been around since the Renaissance, but it wasnât until the late 20th century that artists began applying it to the streets, transforming ordinary pavements into magical wonderlands.

The Pioneers: Kurt Wenner and Julian Beever
We canât talk about 3D street art without mentioning its pioneers, Kurt Wenner and Julian Beever. Both artists started creating anamorphic illusions on the streets of Europe in the 1980s, revolutionizing the street art scene. Their innovative works have inspired a new generation of artists to experiment with perspective and create their own jaw-dropping 3D masterpieces.

The Process: From Sketch to Lifelike Artwork
Creating 3D street art is a labor-intensive process that begins with a detailed sketch of the desired illusion. Artists then use mathematical calculations and perspective techniques to determine the correct proportions for the final piece. Once the groundwork is done, they meticulously apply chalk or paint to the pavement, using shading and highlights to bring the illusion to life.

3D Art By Odeith (20 Photos)
Diving Into the World of Odeithâs Anamorphic Graffiti
Portuguese street artist Sergio Odeith, also known as SĂ©rgio Odeith, has gained international recognition for his jaw-dropping 3D graffiti pieces that defy the limits of perception. In this blog post, weâll explore 20 of his most astonishing works and delve into the world of this master of illusion.đ Follow Odeith on Instagram
Odeithâs Background and Style
Odeith began his graffiti career in the 1980s, honing his skills on the streets of Lisbon. Over the years, he has refined his technique and developed his signature style, characterized by bold colors, intricate details, and mind-bending optical illusions (read more about him later in this post).
The Art of Creating 3D Graffiti
Odeithâs 3D graffiti art is a perfect blend of skill, perspective, and creativity. By employing anamorphic techniques and masterful shading, he transforms ordinary walls and objects into realistic three-dimensional scenes that appear to leap off the surface.Odeithâs Signature Subject Matter
Odeith is known for tackling a wide range of subject matter in his work, from animals and insects to urban landscapes and fantastical creatures. His pieces often feature a sense of movement and depth, drawing viewers into his vivid, illusionary world.
Exploring Odeithâs Most Astonishing Works
Among Odeithâs most remarkable pieces are his larger-than-life murals of animals, including a majestic lion, a menacing crocodile, and an otherworldly praying mantis. These works not only showcase his technical prowess but also highlight his ability to breathe life into his subjects.
Odeithâs Impact on the Street Art Scene
Odeithâs innovative 3D graffiti art has earned him a reputation as one of the most talented and influential artists in the street art world. His work has inspired countless other artists and raised the bar for what is possible with spray paint and a blank canvas.
Odeithâs Background and Style: A Deeper Dive
Born in Damaia, Portugal, in 1976, SĂ©rgio âOdeithâ first picked up a spray can in the mid-1980s, painting signatures and doodles on his neighborhood walls. It wasnât until the mid-1990s that he encountered graffiti artists in Carcavelos, where the movement was gaining momentum. This sparked a passion for graffiti that led him to paint illegally on street walls and railway lines in and around Lisbon.
Odeithâs impressive evolution as an artist is due in part to his dedication to painting large-scale murals in various neighborhoods throughout Damaia, Carcavelos, and Amadora. Although he dropped out of school at the age of 15 and never received any formal art training, Odeithâs talent for drawing and his relentless self-taught approach to his craft led him to become the renowned artist he is today.
In 2003, Odeith adopted his current moniker, and by 2005, his innovative use of the anamorphosis technique began garnering international recognition. This âSomber 3Dâ style, as he later called it, involves painting on 90-degree corners or flat walls to create authentic, large-scale compositions of insects or objects that give a striking 3D optical illusion effect. Many of these works, painted in abandoned spaces, quickly went viral due to their realism and technique.
Odeith briefly lived in London after closing his tattoo shop in 2008, but he has since returned to Lisbon, where he now focuses exclusively on studio work and walls. Despite his lack of formal training, Odeith has become a pioneering force in the world of street art, with his dark anamorphic style and passion for the craft setting him apart from other artists.

âThe Milkmaidâ Reimagined
Oakoak brings Johannes Vermeerâs The Milkmaid to life in an urban setting. The artwork is seamlessly integrated with a real milk can, making it appear as though the milk is pouring into it. This clever illusion merges classical art with modern street elements.
2.

3.
Dancing with the Fence
Oakoak transforms a bent section of an old metal fence into a dancing figure. By adding small, round faces to the rusted metal, the artwork gives life to what was once just urban decay, turning it into a whimsical moment of movement.
4.

Hydrant Lovebirds
In this playful and romantic intervention, Oakoak transforms two red fire hydrant pipes into a pair of lovebirds gazing at each other. With painted eyes, arms, and floating hearts above them, the pipes appear to embrace, turning an ordinary urban feature into a charming street scene.

Since 2006, OAKOAK has had streets, walls, sidewalks and roads as its playground. Originally from Saint Etienne, he sticks his drawings in each of the places he crosses in order to create a smile in the pedestrian at the bend of a street where he does not expect it.
His approach consists of diverting urban elements, playing with flaws that at first glance seem of no particular interest, such as cracks in a wall. He thus adds his own vision, his own references which often relate to the geek universe. A way of imagining the urban space in a more poetic way. From playful interactions with crosswalks to whimsical depictions of beloved cartoon characters like Homer Simpson and Obelix, Oakoakâs work brings a fresh perspective to the streets.

OAKOAK: For me street art has to use urban elements. Itâs the most important thing for street art. Using and playing with things you find in the street.
