Created by the talented group of mural painters known as CitéCréation, the mural first came to life in 1987 as a tribute to the neighborhood’s rich history. La Croix-Rousse once served as the bustling center of Lyon’s silk industry during the 19th century, earning it the nickname “the hill that works.” The mural, known as “Le Mur des Canuts,” pays homage to the silk weavers who resided and toiled in this vibrant community.
The mural captures the essence of the neighborhood’s past, featuring colorful buildings, pastel-hued high windows, a stone stairway, a charming Guignol theater, and, of course, a silk shop. Every detail is meticulously crafted to create a three-dimensional effect, seamlessly blending art with the architectural heritage of Lyon.
La Croix-Rousse’s silk industry may have diminished over time, but the mural stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the silk workers who once rebelled against their oppressive working conditions in 1831. Their courageous spirit continues to echo through the vibrant streets of La Croix-Rousse.
Throughout the years, the mural has undergone two updates, in 1997 and 2013, reflecting the evolving landscape and spirit of the neighborhood. Today, it remains one of Europe’s largest displays of public art, drawing visitors from far and wide to admire its grandeur and immerse themselves in Lyon’s rich cultural heritage.

Born as Julien Malland in Paris, Seth started painting graffiti in the 1990s in the city’s 20th district. Over time, he grew into a famous mural artist, using bright colors and powerful emotions to create art that speaks to people all over the world.In this post, you’ll see 32 of Seth’s most magical murals. A Creative Voyage:
Seth’s life as an artist changed in 2003 when he started a world tour. He worked with artists from different cultures and learned new ways to paint in cities around the globe. This experience led to his book “Globe Painter” (2007) and the documentary series “Les Nouveaux Explorateurs,” which was shown on Canal+. Over five years, Seth visited 15 unique places, expanding his artistic style and creativity.During these travels, Seth developed his signature style, often focusing on themes of childhood and imagination.

Nina Valkhoff: This mural is for everyone who needs a hug. It’s called ‘Jade and Moggy’ and it represents the amazing feeling of hugging someone you love, human or animal. Especially in these challenging times this is a feeling most of us crave, and I hope to give a message of hope and love with this mural. We see a sleeping girl with her cat. Is she dreaming, or is what we are seeing a daydream of the cat, who sees tasty little fishes appear? Based on a photo taken by Karin Post of her daughter Jade and their cat Moggy. Made for the Goldmine festival in Gent, organized by Wallin’.

Did you know that there are foxes in Rotterdam? I did not, and I was so delighted, that I took this opportunity (wall) to tell everyone about the foxes in my city! There are roughly between 30 and 50 of them, hiding for humans, very rarely they are spotted on the streets. They help to keep the population of rats under control and they will never attack humans/kids . The downside is that chickens and rabbits are not safe for a hungry fox.
The Irish mythological story of Étaín! By Nina Valkhoff for DRAWDA festival in Drogheda, Ireland.
Nina Valkhoff: My contribution to the DRAWDA festival in Drogheda, Ireland. This was a special one, I was given the Irish mythological story of Étaín, to make my own visual representation of this complex story. I will not do it justice trying to summarize it here, so I will explain the elements I picked. Étaín was a beautiful woman who got cursed and transformed into a scarlet fly. This is the glowing insect you see in the middle of my painting, a ‘scarlet fly’ with a little twist. In the very end of the story, over a thousand years have passed and Étaín has transformed many times, she flies away with her lover and they are seen as two swans. In my composition I tried to show protection and love, elements that are a part of this story.

Fabián Bravo Guerrero about the mural: In this beautiful mural titled ‘Raíces’, the eternal legacy of Andalusian flamenco that transcends generations is represented. In the center of the composition, a girl with a deep look and full of passion, hugs her guitar with devotion and dedication. Her fingers, Like dancing petals, they caress the strings, releasing melodies impregnated with sentiment and ancestral experience.
Around her, exquisitely displayed pink flowers intertwine with the air, symbolizing the beauty and delicacy of flamenco. These flowers, as symbols of the Andalusian land, are a tribute to the flamenco artists born in Algeciras, who, with their talent and passion, have left an indelible mark on the art world.
The ‘Raíces’ mural captures the very essence of flamenco, that magical connection that is transmitted from generation to generation, like an ancestral whisper that resonates in every chord and every beat. It is a tribute to the strength and power of music, capable of moving us and transporting us to deep places of the soul, reminding us of our roots and our cultural identity.
May this work endure over time as a living symbol of the greatness and passion of Andalusian flamenco, and as a tribute to those artists who have left an indelible legacy in Algeciras and in the world of flamenco art.

Fabián Bravo Guerrero about the mural: Swallows represent respect, love and fidelity, they are migratory birds, which usually migrate to Africa, that’s why I chose to paint them here in Casablanca, the almond flowers, makes the swallows stand out more.
I decided to paint the background with Arab tiles, and turquoise, white and reddish color’s, in tribute to the “Hassan II Mosque” (the second largest in the world) that was near the mural.

Fabián Bravo Guerrero about the mural: According to data from the Specialized System for Reporting Cases of School Violence (Siseve) from the Ministry of Education, a total of 20,604 bullying reports were recorded nationwide between 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 alone.
This is what the mural is about.
In it, we see a teenage girl climbing a staircase toward the moon, which shines brightly and illuminates the entire scene.
The moon represents everything the girl has dreamed of.
She wants to reach it—like we all do—but she’s carrying a heavy backpack: filled with insults, rejection, fear, loneliness…
And how will her story end?
On one hand, the girl might reach her goals thanks to the help she receives after her bullying case becomes known.
On the other hand, she might not make it. The weight of her backpack is so heavy that it throws off her balance, and she can’t reach her destination.
With this, I aim to reflect the internal struggle faced by those experiencing bullying, highlighting the importance of offering support—before the weight becomes too much to bear.

By Martín Ron in San Nicolás de los Arroyos, Argentina for San Nicolás de los Arroyos.Martín Ron (direct translation): When I arrived in this beautiful city, I was concerned about the dramatic change that the landscape suffered due to the historical downspout of the RÍO PARANA River that gives life to a large part of this region. The causes? Many: Extreme climate change, drought, deforestation, reduction of wetlands and a lot of disinterest in asking ourselves questions. The consequences? Too many. This mural is part of a new series of murals in which I am working where the protagonist is the reflection. And how opportune to get involved to invite you to reflect on what happens when a river runs out of water.
