We’ve made the hard decision to end our experiment with Mozilla.social and will shut down the Mastodon instance on December 17, 2024. Thank you for being part of the Mozilla.social community and providing feedback during our closed beta. You can continue to use Mozilla.social until December 17. Before that date, you can download your data here (https://mozilla.social/settings/export), and migrate your account to another instance following these instructions (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-social-faq).

After checking about:config, "Hide weather on New Tab" sets the config value "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.showWeather" to "false", but leaves "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.weatherfeed" as the default of "true". So, my suspicion was correct, #Firefox is still sending your location off every 30 minutes to get the weather in the background by default even if you disable this new widget: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/components/newtab/lib/WeatherFeed.sys.mjs #infosec #privacy
a screenshot of Firefox's about:config after hiding the weather widget, showing weatherfeed unmodified as true and showWeather modified to false.

Firefox WebApp: Webseiten in externen Browser öffnen?

Hallo!

So that's that: Firefox is now the only useful browser in the world.

Meanwhile, Google controls nearly the entire web browser market, far more than Microsoft ever did at the height of the original browser wars.

Using Chromium based products makes you less safe.

In #Firefox 128 you have to uncheck all these checkboxes - especially the last one!

Ever found modern fancy scrollbars in #Firefox inaccessible?

about:config and:

widget.gtk.overlay-scrollbars.enabled → false

keeps them fully visible while not however.

widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override

can be used to make them thicker (I've set 24).

Im not using #friendica, but #DarkReader on #firefox, cool to read, that other one use DarkReader.

So thats not totally nerdy, to use DarkReader.

!Friendica Support Anyone out there using Friendica with mobile #Firefox on #Android? Tried it again for a while this weekend but eventually gave up (again) because, in the web UI on my device, Friendica / frio became almost unusable while trying to "@" - mention some user. Either loading or displaying suggestions / completions seems incredibly slow here. Is this just me? Any other experiences?

So excited to see if #iOS 17.4 with the new default browser selection will move the needle for #Firefox on mobile marketshare.

Also when will we see gecko Firefox on iOS 🙀

So odd to see this is EU only. Will USA also manage to get proper legislation done?

Third-Party Browser Updates (EU)

  • After updating to iOS 17.4, EU users that open Safari will see a pop up that allows them to choose a new default browser option from a list of the most popular browsers on iOS.
  • Apple is also allowing alternative browser engines, and will not limit browsers like Chrome to the WebKit engine.

Hmm... this is kinda gross @mozilla... Why does this #firefox feature even exist and why did you enable it by default?

#alpinelinux

Why I use #Firefox

  1. The about:config page
  2. Mozilla cannot decrypt my data on their servers
  3. Translating web pages is also completely private
  4. Mozilla develops their own browser engine
  5. The best support for extensions on #Android
  6. A great picture-in-picture player

I #trust #Mozilla more than I trust #Google, #Apple, #Microsoft, or any other company that makes #web browsers. This trust is based on the fact that Mozilla chooses the highest level of user privacy when developing services such as Firefox Sync, Firefox Translate, and others. A web browser is an integral part of a person’s #online life, so it makes sense to choose a #browser from a company that one trusts the most.

Dear @mozilla
Please, please, please put the RSS indicator back in Firefox.

People need to know about this technology which empowers users over greedy, controlling corporations.

Update: As many have pointed out, you *can* use @thunderbird as an RSS feed reader, and there are many #firefox add-ons to restore the RSS indicator (one of which I'm already using). But my point is that Firefox needs to lean into RSS as an answer to all the crap that is the modern web, and help educate users about it

#Mozilla asks for donations to reach half of their CEO's yearly salary, while people are getting laid off. Seems to me that the solution is simple.

[edit] Okay, this has gotten a lot of buzz, and I'm happy people respectfully weighed in with arguments and counterarguments. I'm not giving up on #Mozilla and #FireFox, nor on other initiatives for a better web. I am, however, going to be muting this now.

The yearly salary of the Mozilla Foundation Chairwoman is twice that what they ask in yearly donations.

"Did any user in the world want a user tracking and ad platform baked directly into their browser? Probably not, but this is Google, and they control Chrome, and this probably still won't make people switch to Firefox."

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/

I stick to #Firefox

If you’re switching to #Firefox, remember Firefox is not private by default. Consider the #LibreWolf fork, which is. Otherwise, go into your settings and adjust its tracking features (like having #Google as the default search engine), turn off telemetry, “experiments”, etc.

(Also, if you all switch and Google goes bankrupt, #Mozilla will go bankrupt too because they exist thanks to half a billion dollars a year from Google. So remember Google must survive for Mozilla to survive.)

#chrome

Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to #Firefox as Google ramps up the enshitification of #Chrome, let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.

Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal #gmail in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.

It'll take you 30 seconds to set up.

Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Mozilla's explanation: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/containers

The OS upgrade was an opportunity for #Ubuntu to once more saddle me down with a #snap install of #Firefox, removing my hand-installed apt version.

And I get all the funny little horrors back. Just now after a sudden Firefox crash, I now have the hand mouse pointer on any URL link.. that is completely BS and unworkable.

:ms_exclamation_mark_red: The news is old, from 2020, but the point stands.

Looks like the browser that forked the browser that a browser made by the largest ad vendor in the world is based on in order to be able to serve different ads had legally threated a browser that forked it in order to remove said ads
https://bitgrum.com/2020/09/11/brave-browser-fork-changes-name-after-legal-threats/

Do yourself a favor and just use #Firefox instead.

With all the #Firefox talk lately, Android users should know add-ons like uBlock Origin work on Firefox mobile. Mobile web is almost unusable without it or an equivalent.
