Let's try it again: This post from #Mastodon can reach the whole #Fediverse, #Bluesky & more. That's #Sharkey, #Pixefeld (hence the pic), #Mbin, #Lemmy, #Friendica, #Hometown, #Akkoma... How far can it go?

Please share it, wherever you see it! #SocialMedia

Serie – Fediverse-Dienste: Die Idee

Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again.

Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake.

If you're looking for the thread, it's on the Internet Archive:

A list of issues I have with Friendica, specifically as a replacement for other Fediverse software

psst https://github.com/ar-nelson/ludwig

If you want to take a look at the code, it's up on GitHub now. But this isn't the MVP, it's not ready to use yet. Maybe in a week? At least that's what I'm hoping.

The MVP should be a fully-functional local forum but won't support federation yet, that's the next step. Luckily Lemmy's federation approach is much simpler than Mastodon's.

(My first post!) Discussing (and discovering!) how Friendica great is 😀

I'm kinda annoyed at #lemmyworld tbh. More often than not I get random errors when I want to check it out. I think I'll just move to lemm.ee. I wish we could just move our accounts like on Mastodon. It's a hassle resubscribing to everything. #lemmy

Content warning: Fediverse Meta

The #Fediverse needs to learn some serious conflict resolution...

If we ever aspire to become a serious alternative to corporate platforms we can't continue with this behavior. Let me explain.

Two days ago someone created a "The_Donald" community of a well-known #Lemmy instance. Immediately there were cries for defederation, blocking, and suspicion about the admin letting racists run rampant on his instance.

Ultimately when the admin logged in they removed that community. But before they even had time to realize what was happening they were already being accused of stuff and if any instance heeded the call to block, it would have caused damage to the users who would have their subscriptions / follows severed.

Some users who've just arrived from Reddit and bring a fresh perspective are already wary of the shit show this can become.

That instance resisted massive blocks because it was large enough. But what if it was smaller? >>

I'm hearing rumours that #NodeBB is adding support for ActivityPub. Some folks have told me that this implementation will have group federation capabilities similar to #Lemmy and #Kbin.

I need to investigate this rumour further. If true, this is huge.

At the very least, I know NodeBB is discussing ActivityPub.

#lemmy (UI) needs serious work on error messages. Install doesn't work, and the message is "Error!". Not helpful.

#kbin + #lemmy app is coming along. Here's a preview of the upcoming beta. This is less than a week’s worth of work, so it’s only up from here 😉

Based on polls, looks like Artemis is winning for the name. Which is a great tribute to #ApolloApp 🙏

Stalk my work and suggest ideas in the app's Discord server (link in bio).

Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉

This is the way. :blobcatcool:

As a social platform, Lemmy offers nothing drastically better or different than Reddit. Which, again, I suspect, will be detrimental to its growth. The average person doesn’t care about API pricing; they want their memes. Nor do they care about running their own instance of a social network. All in all, Lemmy comes across as what a utopian Reddit should be. Free of corporate control, with the ability to run your instances. But unless something changes dramatically, it’ll suffer the same fate as Mastodon or Bluesky. I can’t see it gaining any traction beyond those in the know unless serious efforts are made to simplify it for the average user.

#Lemmy is increasing in popularity very quickly.

95% of all posts on my timeline are Lemmy posts. Before #Mastodon was the major one filling my timeline.

Great to see a #Fediverse platform attracting so many new users.

If I stop using #Lotide, should I switch to #Kbin, or #Lemmy?

  • Kbin (66%, 10 votes)
  • Lemmy (33%, 5 votes)

In support for the Reddit blackout, /r/joplinapp will do dark for two days. In the meantime find us on Lemmy, the federated alternative!

So, this is great news!

Jerry Bell @jerry who runs the large Mastodon instance infosec.exchange, has posted that they are running both #Lemmy and #kbin instances:

"I have good news!
https://infosec.pub is running lemmy, and https://fedia.io is running kbin and we control them both"
https://infosec.exchange/@jerry/110527602646036871

This should give people confidence that these instances can handle the coming surge in new users:
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup
kbin: https://fedia.io/register

Re-inventing the federated wheel because you don't know that wheels exist

I got tired of forgetting where the #RSS / #Atom #feeds are on various #Fediverse platforms and having to track them down, so I started a list.

https://hyperborea.org/tech-tips/fediverse-feeds/

Currently covers *deep breath* #Mastodon, #Bookwyrm, #Funkwhale, #GoToSocial, #Lemmy, #Misskey & forks, #Pleroma & forks #PeerTube, #Pixelfed, #Plume, #Snac2, #Takahe, and #WriteFreely

*whew*

Feel free to let me know what I should add to the list (or any corrections I need to make) in a reply to this post!

@Friendica Support

https://wiki.friendi.ca/docs/forums

The dislikes are seen by others, but of course only on platforms that support them. For example, it works on #Lemmy and #Peertube.
