I believe people on the #Fediverse are more likely to add alternative text to the images they post than on any other popular social media platform, that's great for #Accessibility. But it isn't the end-all-be-all of it. For example, when one of my contacts posts in German or Finnish or Farsi, I can copy the text and plug it in a translator to figure out what they meant.

However, when they share a picture including text in the same language, even if they transcribed the text in the picture in the alternative text attribute, I can't access it on mobile at all, and even on desktop I can't copy it from the default popup on mouse hover.

I tried to dabble with #CSS to reveal the alt-text attribute value using pseudo-content, but it doesn't work since we're dealing with an #HTML <img> which is an empty element by definition. Is there any other way to expose this attribute value other than just parse the text in the post body directly?

Following someone on the Fediverse is broken — the user-experience (UX) is not good.

I have done user testing with people who have used other social-media, but who have never used the Fediverse

Virtually all of them fail at following someone on a remote server

ZDay: How to Grow a Saner Society. A Lifetime Adventure --- by Tio

On 26th of August, 2023, we presented TROM at the annual ZDay event in Prague. This was the last ZDay after a decade long of making them every year.

Our presentation was focused on showcasing in a unique way how our society works and how trade is at the core of most of our issues. In the second half we focused on the positive side: how we and others create trade-free good and services and why this can become a tsunami movement if more of us engage into it, in a decentralized way.

We put a lot of effort into creating a simple narrative and interesting slides with animations, to make it all more fun and easy to understand.

This was the first presentation for Tio and we hope more to follow.

Another day, another fantastic #Friendica feature that I found. If you've already been for a while, you can check your feed from a year ago*. While you are in your newsfeed, simply click on the #year you want to check on the Archive pane on the left (keep scrolling to find it), then click on On this day. You'll get all the posts that were sent to your instance exactly one year ago. Isn't it wonderful to walk through your personal memory lane from time to time? 😁

*I guess it depends on how long have you been to a certain Friendica server, not sure if posts are displayed if you moved your account to a different server for less than a year before. I'm also not sure if this depends on a certain plugin, or if it's a baked-in functionality.

Dear @Friendica Admins, for my #Friendica and also my other #fediverse servers, I am looking for a recommended minimum instance #blocklist which contains only domains that contain or distribute illegal or potentially illegal (in Germany/EU, UK or US) content and / or are notorious spammers. I use a combination of the #gardenfence and #oliphant tier0/tier1 lists at the moment which seems okay but is broader than what I described due to the inclusion of very block-friendly sources. I am looking for something really focussing on legality and server security only as a condensed basis. Any recommendations? @Friendica Support

I think it's possible for different well-intentioned folk to come to different conclusions about the #BBC, harm done to the #trans community by their coverage over the years, our hopes for the future of the #fediverse, etc.

But while forming opinions, maybe seek out writing by ACTUAL trans thinkers and journalists. Not just the quick reactions of cis social media admins who've never had to grapple with any of it.

Speaking of, that's something BBC itself is historically quite bad at.

Really love how cis ppl who've never been impacted by or cared about #BBC's years of overtly anti-#trans coverage are suddenly experts on what is/isn't transphobia.

I have nuanced views about the value of pre-emptive blocks and the vital importance of creating space for news organizations.

But I'm really disappointed with a number of #fediverse thought leaders whose stance to our legit pain seems to be dismissal and mockery of folks most directly harmed by their coverage.

Ich würde ja gerne einen #Friendica node aufsetzen und ein feines, reduziertes Interface dafür basteln. Aber das ganze theming aus Smarty Templates und JS-Gefuddel überfordert mich.

Ähnlich sieht es bei #Hubzilla aus. Und andere #Fediverse Plattformen kommen nicht in Frage, weil ich zu wenig Admin-Knowhow für Non-LAMP habe.

Since such APIs for scanning #CSAM will never be open and free (so that criminals can not "test" materials before publication) then the only option is a decent #moderation #fediverse. But decent means actually manually reviewing all photo/video material published on the servers. And this, in turn, indicates that instances should be no more than real moderation capabilities. Such manual moderation does not seem realistic on instances with tens-hundreds of thousands of accounts.

Disappointed really. I thought Threads was going to bring some innovation to the #fediverse and force projects to re-think everything they were doing. But no, it's just another lame text/plain Twitter clone. It's making me question everything I know about Darwin when it's the defective-by-design projects that survive and thrive - and the strong and capable are pushed to ever smaller and darker corners of the fediverse.

@morgan Just from a resource consumption, it would be more efficient to have the entirety of the #Fediverse in just one big instance. Inter-instance communication is a huge overhead that I expect represent the bulk of the power consumption.

As such power consumption isn't a meaningful metric for decentralized social media instances.
