The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

#Threads #Mastodon #Krita #MastoArt #Meta

A small Mastodon mascot is happy to roll out a red carpet to welcome the footsteps of Meta; a representation of the death, a skeleton in a black robe with a scythe. This one has a head band with the Meta logo, and a keychain with large logo of What's App, Facebook, Instagram and Threads. The skeletons walks happily while hidding the scythe on their back. This is a representation of how naive the tiny Mastodon can be.

#Zuckerberg’s #Meta comes under #attack from human rights campaigners

#Internews said complaints about #misinformation on conflicts, such as the #Tigray #War in #Ethiopia, sometimes went unanswered for months, although warnings about content spreading in #Ukraine were typically dealt with quickly.

Was meint ihr dazu? 😎 :blobdevil:

Corporate takeover news..

In the latest move #Meta has joined the #W3C #SocialCG - the community group that created the #ActivityPub Recommendation - in the form of their employee Ben Savage, who is already involved in another community group, together with #Mozilla

Oh my God. PLEASE do not get on Meta's new competitor for Twitter.

It harvests mucho data including our health data.

You cannot opt out.

#Meta has already taken info from a Facebook Messenger chat about seeking #abortion in a hostile state, and turned it over for prosecution.

If you're #trans or might ever need to end a pregnancy PLEASE do not use #Threads.

Boost this. Protect your damn friends.

I wish more people would fight for #Podcasting the same way people are fighting for the #Fediverse.

#Meta, #Tumblr, et al, are saying that they're joining the Fediverse (I'll believe it when I see it) and everyone is trying to figure out how best to deal with that.

Meanwhile, #Spotify and #YouTube have already #EEE #Podcasts by adding music podcasts that don't sync to #RSS feeds and not providing #VideoPodcasts with RSS feeds at all. No one is batting an eyelash about that!

By the way, it’s possible that #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg’s fediverse play for Threads is related to sidestepping the anti-competitiveness/antitrust issues around the EU’s Digital Services Act.

“Hey, look, we’re not a monopoly. We’re not being anticompetitive… we’re federating using an open protocol. Here, let our friend Eugen, CEO of Mastodon, explain to you how it works in very dispassionate words…”

#eu #ec #fediverse #mastodon #antitrust #DigitalServicesAct #PR #usefulIdiots

Folks, the reason #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg hasn’t launched #Threads in the #EU isn’t because the EU is determined to protect your privacy, it’s because the EU is determined to protect The Single Market (peace be upon it) from anticompetitive behaviour. It’s because they’re using Instagram to launch Threads and sharing data between them (and not with EU startups that might want to use that data too). It’s #antitrust, not #privacy. It’s markets, not people.

what do you call #meta's #instagram that tries to be mastodon?

#threads? well, yes, but! it should have been… #metadon:

«[Instagram] withdrawal management using methadone can be accomplished in less than a month, or it may be done gradually over a longer period of time, or simply maintained for the rest of the patient’s life».

Looking forward for when #Meta will add #ActivityPub support to #Instagram #Threads

Look I don't want to be that always cynical yelling at clouds person, but I wasn't that convinced by the @Mastodon statement. It was heavy on describing what the platform looks like right now, and extremely careful to not make any promises about the future, talk about moderation standards, or acknowledge any economic power imbalance between #Meta and the #fediverse. Also cherry-picked XMPP example over, e.g. email which has been raised by users. #threads

#Meta's #Threads wanting to federate with the #fediverse (if that will ever happen 🤞🏻) is a form of #gentrification. A large corporate shopping mall settles in a nice neighborhood with small local run shops and community centers. The new shopping mall says 'if we settle here, more people will come, and you all will benefit'. A few years later all small shops are bankrupt and the community is destroyed. What remains is a barren corporate landscape.

#Threads won’t support Activitypub or the Fediverse at launch, but it’s apparently still coming.

“We’re committed to building support for ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, into this app. We weren’t able to finish it for launch given a number of complications that come along with a decentralized network, but it’s coming”

Y'all, Meta isn't launching their Twitter alike in the EU because it would be _literally illegal there_ due to all the privacy and data collection issues they plan on having: https://www.independent.ie/business/technology/no-instagram-threads-app-in-the-eu-irish-dpc-says-metas-new-twitter-rival-wont-be-launched-here/a1927220337.html

...and some of you want to federate with them?!?!

Content warning: META WARNING

PrasĂłwka

If #Meta wanted to mine your content to populate #Threads but didn’t want to federate their own content to the #Fediverse, they wouldn’t use ActivityPub for this purpose. They would use RSS—which is enabled by default on most Mastodon servers. In many ways, it would probably be easier for Meta to do this too.

My expectation is that meta would allow users to see federated content but would not allow threads to be federated.

This would provide incentive for people to move to threads. After a while, the walls around the garden would grow.

It's the same embrace, extend, extinguish model they used with MySpace when they rolled out Facebook connect.

So what happened in the #Facebook #meta #fediverse conference call yesterday? Has someone from our (the fediverse) side put out a blog post? Or did the NDA work?

If you're on the fence about Meta or even calling others on here "idiots" for disagreeing with you, may I point out this article and let you ruminate on what it could mean for the fedi.

"As first noted by The New Scientist and Animal New York, Facebook's data scientists manipulated the News Feeds of 689,003 users, removing either all of the positive posts or all of the negative posts to see how it affected their moods."

The key is to prevent #Meta from getting control over the #ActivityPub standard. That needs to stay independent and non-corporate.

oh, here's some JUICY rumored details about meta's plans for the fediverse

tl;dr "Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners."

can't entirely verify their validity but it's still worth posting just in case

Louis @louis@emacs.ch

You make some strong arguments here. It's great to see you laying out your reasoning in detail and with passion. theart: That's the spirit. What | have learned, however, is that Meta will only federate with select larger instances from the beginning. There will be contracts which also provide for financial compensation for the instance owners. Meta positions itself as a “savior’, because especially the big instances have a very strong financial pressure. Users take it for granted that someone else is paying for everything. In these contracts, Meta also specifies the rules regarding the moderation. Instances will have the option of allowing ads from Meta or not (with the benefit of additional compensation). Smaller instances will have the possibility to register for a federation with Meta in a second step, but there will be no financial compensation and Meta decides if they will grant access based on their reputation.
Regarding Meta, I'm in the industry for 25 years and have a few friends who worked at Meta from the early years until recently. One s stil there. Regarding UFol, | was part of the disussion at the time, we held a vote at Emacs.ch P R S But don' take this at face value, obvisouly these admins have to sign harsh NDAS. But it sounded very credible and | could not imagine it going any ther way. Examples of big instances (from Japan | believe?) show that the long-term burdens are simply unbearable and operators just wait for the right moment to e 1donot critizise Meta for their attempt to use the favor of the hour to their ‘advantage. As a public corporation its theijob to make proft. As I said, its not them who will decide the fate of the Fediverse. ‘Overworked/stressed out admins, high costs for infrastructure, ongoing disputes ‘and moderation challenges are what threaten the Fediverse. It was not meant to ‘9row o fast before we find common solutions for these issues. What do you think?
