Watching the social media landscape news the past couple weeks has me in a dual mindset of despondancy and determination about the fediverse. The despondancy comes from the reinforced realism that usage decisions around these systems will forever be driven by FOMO and frictionless entry and our systems aren't really ready for either yet. I have mixed feelings about Mastodon changing onboarding to make it all "mastodon.social" by default (where 90% of the users will go now) but getting rid of the biggest analysis paralysis part of getting people here is vitally important. To be frank, normal people don't give a damn about decentralization or data control they care about FOMO and "it just works". Friendica, my network, has even further to go on that front than Mastodon even. The determination comes from the knowledge that we did get a glimpse of people being able to feel FOMO about the fediverse thanks to Musk's Twitter enshitification. As people, including me, continue to refine the fediverse we could be in a position where more of them feel it enough to stay on the next wave. The fact is I'm not working on these systems to "conquering the world". I'm working on these systems because I enjoy using them on a daily basis and I want to improve that experience for myself and others. I hope that as we improve more will come into the fold and we could eventually hit a critical mass to be a real fraction of the social media space. Czyli dlaczego bez “Wyszukaj lub wklej adres” na Mastodonie się nie da. Osoby przyzwyczajone do wszechobecnych apek mobilnych obsługujących sieci społecznościowe są często zdziwione, że klienty #Mastodon-a, czy to webowe, czy na telefon, często wyświetlają linki do profili czy wpisów na innych instancjach w nowym oknie przeglądarki internetowej, zamiast wewnątrz aplikacji.

Dlaczego tak się dzieje?

Klient nie wie, czy istnieje wersja zasobu znajdującego się pod wskazanym adresem url w formacie Activity Streams, którego używa całe Fediverse.

Czy klient mógłby wiedzieć, to osobny temat. W każdym razie to do zrealizowania technicznie. Ale na tę chwilę nie wie.

Wobec tego “bezpiecznie” odsyła do przeglądarki, która zawsze dobrze obsłuży dany link, bo właściwie każdy zasób w sieci ma swoją reprezentację text/html.

Jak zatem zmusić klienta by wyświetlił znany nam adres fediwersowy “wewnątrz” aplikacji klienckiej?

Właśnie metodą Kopiego Pasta, czyli Copy/Paste, po naszemu kopiuj/wklej.

Kopiujemy link do schowka, wklejamy w pole wyszukiwania i każemy odnaleźć. W zależności, czy to link do profilu, czy do jakiejś treści, znalezisko wyświetli nam się w odpowiedniej zakładce, albo po prostu na liście. No i dalsza interakcja z treścią będzie się już odbywała wewnątrz aplikacji: możemy podbić, polubić, wejść w profil osoby, która tę treść utworzyła i ją zaobserwować. Tak właśnie radzę obchodzić się z linkami do treści na #Pixelfed, #PeerTube, #Friendica, Mastodon i z innych znanych serwerów fediświata.

Dlaczego w wyszukiwarce działa a klikając na link nie?

Otóż wyszukiwarka prosi zdalny serwer o treść w formacie Activity Streams. I jeśli ją otrzyma, ma pewność, że to treść “fediwersowa” i bezpiecznie można ją “konsumować” zgodnie ze standardem.

Dla Power Users i osób zainteresowanych: to typ treści (content type) “application/activity+json”. Czyli JSON, na którym cały fediświat jest oparty, w przeciwieństwie do przeglądarkowego “text/html”. Jest tak, że za każdym razem jak wpisujesz adres w przeglądarce, ona prosi o właśnie taki typ treści serwer zdalny: text/html.

Możesz samodzielnie sprawdzić, że dany adres url (albo inaczej link) ma w fedi przynajmniej dwie swoje reprezentacje:

zwróci treść “przeglądarkową” czyli text/html, zaś dla tego samego url:

zwróci JSON strawny dla aplikacji.

Ot i cała tajemnica metody Kopiego Pasta i tego “niewygodnego” przerzucania do przeglądarki, które mnie akurat nie przeszkadza, ale ja to w ogóle wolę aplikacje webowe 😀 od mobilnych czy desktopowych.

!Friendica Support Anyone out there using #fedilab with both #friendica and #mastodon? I'm trying to track down a weird performance issue on my device and feeling gradually lost. Experience:

- Fedilab performance on my main Friendica account often is far from usable on my main Friendica account (loma.ml).
- Performance is slightly better on friendica.opensocial.space (Friendica).
- Performance is noticeably better on social.tchncs.de.

On the other side, it seems Fedilab at least is partially to blame for that as, in example using #tusky or #yuito, the performance of Friendica also improves a bit in there (even while Mastodon still works faster).

Just talking about home timeline and notifications for now, I know that list and hashtag timelines do have performance issues in Friendica at the moment. Still I'm lost as it seems impossible to even know where to start. Is it a Fedilab issue? Is it a general issue of Mastodon API having performance limitations in Friendica? Is it an issue of my instance? Is it an issue of my account on my instance? Where to start? 😑️
