Hashtags are supposed to be from all the contacts that has a server in the #fediVerse, if the posts were published publicly. Their for mastodon.social with it's overwhelming user base should be connected to a very large percentage of the fediverse accounts (that's an interesting percentage investigation to do). It even has introduced full text search and I guess it's using it so that's another tool in one place to get a lot of the total info out there.

#friendica has relays, I never checked that option out but if you dig into it you'll find some answers. In the latest release it added "channels" to create streams of selected gathered information, another thing I haven't digged into yet. Actualy friendica and #hubzilla might be the ones that can tap into most info on the fediverse. Those communities, both inicialized by Mike, have kinda basic goal to create workarounds in the fediVerse to connect to everyone and everything. Thinking about it, friendica might be the oldest thriving #activityPub speaking platform out there.

My recommendation to check out friendica in your case would be squeet.me as it is run by one of the german main devolpers of that platform so it's always on the latest dev branch.

That's an impression I get first of all in the #mastodon stream as every answer pops up like a single unrelated contextles bubble in once universe that most likely might create some declaration of war in some other distant universe that ultimately might just lead to a dog swolling some toy ball.

Point is when they lead to radicalization, "Tunnelblick", "Scheuklappen" (blinders).

Hallo Fediverse! Bitte um Rückmeldung + Ergänzungen: Übersichts-Tabelle mit Fediverse-Diensten, Vergleichsdiensten und Funktionen

Ich schreibe einen Artikel über den #FediverseFachtag und in dem Rahmen natürlich auch über das #Fediverse . Zielgruppe sind Leute, die wahrscheinlich zum Großteil noch gar nix vom Fediverse gehört haben.
Dazu bin ich dabei, eine Tabelle zu erstellen, in der einige Fedi-Dienste sowie deren Haupt-/ besondere Funktionen aufgeführt werden sollen.

Das ist der derzeitige Entwurf:

Ein Vergleich mit kommerziellen Plattformen ist natürlich immer nur zum Teil passend. Ich kenne auch keinen der kommerziellen Dienste aus eigener Erfahrung, aber für die avisierte Zielgruppe kann so ein Vergleich vielleicht trotzdem eine hilfreiche Orientierung sein. Vielleicht gibt es da aber auch Vergleiche, die passender sind. Einige Dienste (bspw. Medium, Podigee) kannte ich auch noch nicht mal vom Namen her, sondern habe das nur aus ähnlichen Vergleichstabellen übernommen.

Zu den "besonderen Funktionen":
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a. Hubzilla haben so viele Funktionen, dass diese im Rahmen der Tabelle nur exemplarisch aufgeführt werden können und die Auswahl ist subjektiv. Hier wäre die Frage, ob das eine passende Auswahl ist, ob besonders wichtige fehlen oder ob andere Funktionen wichtiger oder besonderer sind.

A detailed #ImageDescription of a complex image does not go into the #AltText. The #W3C says so:

If it can be useful for sighted people, or if everyone, sighted people included, needs it to understand the picture, the image description goes elsewhere. That way, everyone can access it, so it's a matter of #accessibility.

The W3C recommends to put it on a separate page. But the W3C implies that everything on the Web is static webpages accessed via standard desktop Web browsers. That's what the W3C is all about.

Obviously, this doesn't work in the #Fediverse. Unless you're on #Hubzilla, you can't put #ImageDescriptions on separate pages because you can't make such pages in the first place. So the image description has to go into the post.

Again, no problem on Hubzilla which has virtually no post length limit. Same for #Friendica and #Streams. Depending on how long your description is, most other projects may not be problematic either.

But then there's #Mastodon. Only one project, but it's 80% of the Fediverse, and many Mastodon users think it is the Fediverse, full stop.

Mastodon limits posts to only 500 characters. If you came over from #𝕏 where you only had 280 characters, that sounds like a whole lot. But in practice, it's way too little, especially for image descriptions. This, by the way, is why "image description" and "alt-text" are synonymous and mutually exchangeable on Mastodon: Everyone puts their image descriptions into the alt-text which offers 1,500 characters. People can't even imagine that it could be any other way.

But it has to, also because any information available only in the alt-text is lost to those who can't access alt-text, for example due to a physical disability.

So on Mastodon with its 500-character limit, detailed image descriptions should go into a thread that follows the post with the image.

In either case, there should still be an alt-text that says that the image is described in follow-up posts (Mastodon) or the post itself (everywhere else).

Someone seems to have succeeded in forking #Mastodon and migrating the fork to #Nomad, the underlying protocol of #Streams which provides #NomadicIdentity. There's little information about what exactly is going on, only a tech demo video exists on PeerTube. It shows two test instances and the exact same account with the exact same identity running on both, remaining fully in sync. So yes, it's nomadic.

The choice of Nomad instead of #Zot is understandable as it has better integrated #ActivityPub support, so there might not be much incompatibility between vanilla Mastodon and the fork, and it'll stay compatible with the rest of the #Fediverse. Compatibility with #Hubzilla and especially (streams) will even be enhanced, not only because the fork finally recognises nomadic channels, but also also because it clearly features text formatting and quotes. It remains to be seen whether the handling of embedded images will be improved, too.

This is still very experimental, and more information has been announced to follow soon.

• It probably only shows a maximum of four pictures.
  
• It moves them to the end of the post, regardless of where they are in the original post.
  
• It most likely reverses their order.
  
• It leaves them outside the summary (Hubzilla)/CW (Mastodon), so they're always in plain sight.

• Mastodon is a 1:1 #Twitter clone, just without Elon Musk, but otherwise absolutely identical to Twitter. I mean, how could a microblogging service possibly be any different from Twitter? That's just as strange an idea as a desktop operating system that isn't exactly like Windows. Unless you're a Mac user, that is.
  
• Mastodon.social is Mastodon. Because that's the website you've been pointed at on Twitter.
  
• Also, the Fediverse = Mastodon. Only Mastodon.

• You've got three timelines. Next to your personal timeline which lists whatever your contacts have tooted or boosted, there's the local timeline which lists what the other users on your instance have tooted or boosted (this is how and why special interest instances or local instances make sense), and there's the federated timeline which is the local timeline plus what local users' contacts on other instances have tooted or boosted.
  There is, however, no timeline for the entire Fediverse.
  
• There's no full-text search for the entire Fediverse. Deal with it.
  
• There's no secret algorithm telling you what to read or whom to follow. All timelines are strictly chronological.
  
• This also means that there's no secret algorithm shoving your toots into other people's faces. If you want people to discover your toots, use #hashtags. On Twitter, hashtags are a gimmick. In the Fediverse, they're vital.
  
• There's a #newhere hashtag. It matters. As someone who is new here, you're expected to write an introduction, use the #newhere hashtag in it and then pin your introduction so that it's always on top or near the top of your personal timeline for others to read.
  
• There's no quote retweet. And there will never be. Eugen Rochko has a very strong opinion on that, he doesn't want that popular trolling tool on Mastodon, so this won't happen.
  
• Privacy settings per toot. You can choose who can read your toot. If you write threads, it's common practice to only set the first toot to public and all other ones to unlisted so that they don't clutter the public timelines.
  
• Delayed toots. You can choose when your toot goes out.
  
• Content warnings (CW) that blank out your toot. And yes, they're taken very seriously. People are likely to demand you use them when you don't.
  
• Alt-text for images. Again, people are likely to demand you create them when you don't. Some people on the Fediverse are blind and use screen readers, and they, too, want to know what that picture in your toot is.
  
• Not to mention that toots can be almost twice as long as tweets, namely 500 characters. Unless the owner of an instance has changed that number.

• Not all of them are "not Twitter clones", i.e. microblogging services. Pleroma is another one which was created out of disagreements with how Mastodon works. Akkoma is a Pleroma fork which came to exist because someone didn't like where Pleroma went. There's also Misskey. Obviously, they aren't "Mastodon clones" either, they were designed to be different from each other. And there's GNU social, the oldest one on the list.
  
• Pixelfed is "not an #Instagram clone".
  
• Friendica is definitely "not a #Facebook clone" because, while created for a similar purpose, it's still vastly different. And it federates with just about everything that moves including e-mail or WordPress. It even used to federate with Facebook itself eons ago. By the way, #Friendica makes everything possible that I've done in this post which is also why it's usually filed under "macroblogging". But I'm not on Friendica; I'll get to that. Also, Friendica is the second-oldest one on the list.
  
• Mobilizon is "not a #GoogleCalendar or #Doodle clone".
  
• Funkwhale is "not a #SoundCloud or #BandCamp or #Spotify clone", also because you're unlikely to find mainstream commercial music on it. Castopod: ditto, but specialising on podcasts.
  
• PeerTube is "not a #YouTube clone".
  
• Owncast is "not a #Twitch clone".
  
• Lemmy is "not a #Reddit or #HackerNews clone", although the "not a Reddit clone" part can be debated.
  
• WriteFreely and Plume are "not #Medium clones".
  
• BookWyrm is "not a #GoodReads clone".
  
• Flockingbird is "not a #LinkedIn clone" at all, also because rather than being a service of its own, it piggybacks on the rest of the Fediverse by picking up hashtags.
  
• Hubzilla was a successor to Friendica, but it's much more than "not a Facebook clone". It's also not a clone of whichever CMS and/or cloud service you use. It can provide you with your own personal organiser including a #CalDAV calendar (next to the public event calendar) and a #CardDAV addressbook, your own #WebDAV cloud space, your own online photo album, your own website, your own blog and/or your own wiki on top of just about everything that Friendica does. It's the third-oldest on the list and still older than Mastodon.
  
• And there's much more.

Mudança de instância - Instance move

The more recent branches Misty, Osada, and Red Matrix, as i recall, were essentially more stable versions of Zap. They didn't get all of the changes in Zap right away. Misty and Osada were essentially identical except for branding and they came with ActivityPub enabled by default. Red Matrix was Nomad only... that just meant that AP was off by default. In any of those variants, AP could be turned on or off in the Admin panel.

Mike did provide instructions for anyone who runs a Zap/Misty/Osada/RedMatrix site to migrate over to the Streams repository.

Additionally, "Streams" as a fediverse project name doesn't exist. It's just the name of the repository. Once a new site is installed, the software/project name changes to whatever the site admin wants it to be. Check out the streams README. It's a good read.
